Subject: dunn dunnn DUNNNNN Top 20 question

DarkElegance ( ) posted Mon, 22 March 2004 at 6:07 PM · edited Fri, 31 January 2025 at 1:53 PM

ok how does this work. A few friends and I made a bet last night {no I will not say who bet what or on what side} about the top 20. in doing so, we did a lil experiment. we went and voted on a few pics. purposefully making sure the votes where above the lowest one on the top 20 list we were playing with. neither of the pics we did this two where then shown in the top 20 of that particular gallery. So this makes me wonder..even if a picture got enough votes to raise above the lowest one in the top 20 it doesnt show? does a mod need to let it in? we thought perhaps it would take a bit of time for the resulting voteing we did to show..and it is now around 12 or so hours later and the pics tested are still not listed in the top 20. so..... how does it work? is it really voted in? is it a selection of those with said amount of votes then a mod pics it? hmmmmm

You didn't vote twice on the same account did you? It only counts your personal vote once on your logon.

DarkElegance ( ) posted Mon, 22 March 2004 at 8:28 PM

I only voted once ...one set of votes was from UK...another set from georgia and another set from Iowa. different people.

I was just wondering. I like to eliminate the obvious before hearing what the real answer is. :) Have to tell you, it's been a long time since I visited the top 20. I don't know why, but I think I could probably tell without looking who is there. But perhaps I'd be pleasently surprised. But I'm not checking to find out. Now I'll sit back and see who has the real answer. Take care.

I brought some drinks. Anyone thirsty? So if 20 monkeys signed on to 20 computers for 20 minutes, who would end up in the top 20 then? Excuse me. Gas. :/

Zhann ( ) posted Mon, 22 March 2004 at 11:50 PM

If it's a gallery image, it's within a 7 day period, so your votes won't show until the 7days are up for that particular image, the votes are tabulated and the 7 days started again... since images are uploaded very day, you'd need to check the upload date and then tabulate which 7day period the image is in to find the day the votes will show...

dialyn ( ) posted Mon, 22 March 2004 at 11:58 PM

Don't think that quite did it. The friends all voted on the same day. Of course, they could be in different time zones...but that wouldn't account for it. Would it?

Jumpstartme2 ( ) posted Tue, 23 March 2004 at 1:31 AM

Ok, ..I lied..I cannot bet you I will guess what you are betting on...unless of course it has anything to do with favortisim...but that couldn't be it right?...Nahhhh. not in the Top Twenty.... Besides...this is post 18 so I lost anyways :P...and can I have a cornchip just for playing?

Mod's have nothing to do with the Hot 20, it's automated. And, as far as I know, votes appear immediately. I just checked this theory; I voted for an image that had 11 votes in the Hot 20, I then immediately refreshed the Hot 20 and the picture had 12 votes and it had raised one position. As for your question, I'm not sure I follow. How do YOU know how many votes a picture has in the first place? I can't even find that out. (I'm a Mod) So, how do you know that a pic has enough votes at all to appear into the Hot 20? And, I'm not sure myself how the ranking is done when multiple pics have the same number of votes, but are ranked differently. Perhaps ranking/comments are factored in. There are usually formula's for this kind of scenario. AgentSmith

AS, they all agreed to vote for certain images, so they knew ahead of time how many more votes should show up, and the images in the hot 20 state how many votes it rec'd in the 7 day period...that could be it...

And, I think they were trying to get a pic 'into' the hot 20, by all voting for it in one day...

AgentSmith ( ) posted Tue, 23 March 2004 at 3:08 AM

Well, if 3 different IP's were to vote for the same exact picture (that was in the same gallery), and that correspondingHot 20, at it's lowest ranking picture had only two votes, then yes, the "experiment" picture should have shown up immediately. (Mixed Medium gallery) Yes, the 7 day thing is how many votes it recieved in the past 7 days, meaning you can almost think of your vote for whatever pic as having a 7 day expiration on it. A certain picture in a hot 20 could be showing 10 votes, but say only 5 of those votes are good for 7 days, and 3 votes are still good for 4 days, another for 3 days, and the last for 1 more day. etc, etc... Lol...and that isn't factoring in pics that have the same number of votes. You should see the formula they use to create the "Best Rankings". I gave up quick trying to understand that one. (Glad our site tech does) AS

dialyn ( ) posted Tue, 23 March 2004 at 6:40 AM

When I go to the Hot 20, I see something that says: (Mojoworld Hot 20) "weg van de velden, weg van de zee" By prutzworks Mar 17, 2004 (1024 x 768, 308 kb) (Mojoworld Gallery) 8 votes in period ************** Yet AgentSmith says (and I believe AgentSmith, who has never lied to me): "How do YOU know how many votes a picture has in the first place? I can't even find that out. (I'm a Mod) So, how do you know that a pic has enough votes at all to appear into the Hot 20?" So what does the "8 votes in period" mean if not that 8 people voted within the last 7 days?

AgentSmith ( ) posted Tue, 23 March 2004 at 7:38 AM

Lol, what I should have said, was if a pic is not yet in the Hot 20...there is no way to see how many votes it has. (I just assumed my mind could be read...;o) And, yeah, that's exactly what it means "8 people voted in the last 7 days". AS

Dear AgentSmith, you do not (I assure you) want me reading your mind. Thank you for the clarification. I understand the distinction you are making. My interpretation was that DarkElegance and friends took a graphic that was at the bottom of the Top 20 list and voted to see if they could nudge it upward on the list, and that's where the question started (and then we drifted a bit, but you probably noticed that). I cannot, however, speak for DarkElegance on this point so I will await to see what the future of this thread brings in the way of edification. I've had my green tea this morning. I'm content. :)

AgentSmith ( ) posted Tue, 23 March 2004 at 8:17 AM

Lol, I had just assumed "not". "neither of the pics we did this two where then shown in the top 20" (were then shown) I took that as they were voting on a pic that was not yet in the hot 20. Try going into a gallery that doesn't get many visitors, and doesn't even have 20 pictures in their Hot 20 (Lightwave, Maya, ZBrush) Vote for a picture in there, it'll appear immediately in their Hot 20. Don't know what went akimbo with DarkElegance's experiment. ;o) AS

DarkElegance ( ) posted Tue, 23 March 2004 at 12:01 PM

O.o I come back and there are 20 monkies voting now? dear god does that mean I need bananas too? anywho... it was more then one pic. I do not know the base line number a vote of the other pics due to them being previously uploaded. but I know they had at LEAST 4. Agent smith did bring up the point I was curiouse of..what if more then one pic has the same number of votes then what? This bet we have going started over a couple of things. One being in the mixed medium gallery there is a pic in the top 20 where one it has been there apparently for months as well as apparently the viewers where not all that happy with it.{that lead us to the wonderment of is it number of friends that get you in or honestly number of votes} Then we bounced over to a few other galleries and tested out theory again... again we didnt even TRY the poser gallery>.< now if a picture gets a set number of hits in the "period" does that have to stay consistant through out every period to keep it there? {that question goes back as that one piece been there since 2003} and yes if I remember right there was a gallery or two that didnt even HAVE 20 in their top 20 O.O

From what I've noticed, if more than one pic has the same number of votes then they are ordered according to upload date... the older pics getting higher positions over the more recent pics (that have the same number of votes).

I have been a loyal member of Renderosity for several years now.

If I recall correctly, I have never visited the Hot 20. Never.

So.....I must not be particularly concerned about what happens over there. Out of mild curiosity, I just might try visiting the H20 one of these days. Maybe.

I'm sure that "60 Minutes" will air a report on the issue next Sunday. I'll be watching for it.

ok..I'll go for this. :-) There's an image in the Fractal Hot20 that was uploaded to the particular persons gallery a long time ago. It never even got any comments on it. Now it's in the Hot20 in #1 place with 38 votes. Only one comment has been made since it arrived in its "place of honor" a few days ago. What I would like to know is exactly how long that image is going to stay there?

I would assume if a pic recieved enough votes (all made in the same day) to get it into the hot 20, and it wasn't knocked out by other pics, that it would stay up there for 7 days. (seems like a simple, logical theory, lol) Yet, you have the variable that all the votes any picture has, probably didn't all come in on the same exact day (see my shakey theory on that in post #24) And, the variable that the minimum amount of votes for a pic to show up just at #20 can change. ----- Older pics getting up into the hot 20 are still getting votes, it's the only way to get in there. Members go looking at "best ranked", etc., and they find these pics with 100 comments on it, and then vote on it. It has happened to myself on the rare occasion (twice in the past 3 years) `Course were not naive to the fact of clone voting, which we/I check on, pretty regularly, actually. "Friendly voting"? Well, what can I say, it's not a perfect world, lol. We do what we can. ;o/ AS
