Subject: Need graphic art apps for 8 year old child

BabaLouie ( ) posted Wed, 24 March 2004 at 8:39 PM · edited Sat, 28 December 2024 at 10:04 AM

Friend of mine has an extremely talented 8 year old boy, already hand drawing 3d and spatial oriented artwork, landscape scenes and is very much into Greek architecture, not to mention is a pretty good hockey goalie. :) The Mother would like to get the child started on some graphic art programs ... anyone here have any suggestions for programs and links? She is more interested in the free / shareware type now, but is willing to do some purchasing. thanks, BabaLouie

If you are talking about 2d apps, there is "project dogwaffle" which is a very powerful (and free) graphics program. sorry i dont have the link but do a google search and it will turn up something. If you want 3d, then for a starter wings3d would be the way to go, I've seen a 10 year old get the hang of it in just a little while, and even with its advanced functions anyone can play around with it. Im sure there are many more apps i dont know about, but best of luck!

Hey, that ArtRage program AS told us all about is free, and it's fun, and you can do some powerful stuff with it too.

Could be worse, could be raining.

Wings and ArtRage would be my suggestions too. She could maybe have a look at Alice as well?

Doga isn't as much a real graphics editor as a shape assembler; you pick spaceship or robot parts and assemble them into larger ships. I can attest that actual 8-year-olds (well, boys) are entertained by this for long periods of time. You can learn about sizing, mirroring, assembling, etc. (but don't let them know that..;) I've used it on a couple of pics when I'm in a hurry. I'd also recommend Wings3d as well.

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

I'd hesitate on wings, cuz if you start smoothing over and over, or do something like mirror..... things could get hairy. But ArtRage would be perfect!

Many thanks for these suggestions, I will do the downloads and pass them on to the mother, who by the way, sends her thanks for your suggestions. BabaLouie

Um here is a silly answer how about Bryce? I know there are versions out there that are now free version 3 I believe. If not check a 3D magazine for a free version. Bryce is such a fun and easy to use program and is a great place to start!

Try the free version of MojoWorld Transporter. Really fun program! There is an articale about MojoWorld on Renderosity's front page. You can explore entire worlds and make some really fantastic landscapes. There are lots and lots of free worlds available.

An inexpensive Graphire tablet is finger friendly. ~$99. My 5 yr old grand daughter loves it.
