Subject: Is this YOUR artwork?

Please forgive me if this is considered off topic, but is any of this stolen work yours? The person who brought it to my attention on another board and I have tracked down a few of the artists, but some remain to be identified. Wonder if I should tag this "violence" - lol. Makes me wanna bust some heads.

SAMS3D ( ) posted Fri, 02 April 2004 at 9:52 AM

No, none of mine, but that doesn't surprise me...but I sure hope this kind of thing stops, who wants to claim artwork that they did not do....what kind of satisfaction could that bring? Sharen

This will never end. It has to do with human nature. If there is a way to do wrong, someone will do it. Always.

Well, this is a first. 1 of them is definitely mine (Elven Archer) and I think another one is too.

I couldn't find any way to contact the site owner so left a remark under my pic and joined to see if I can contact someone that way.

tadashya ( ) posted Fri, 02 April 2004 at 2:16 PM

some of my stuff is there. My email to the site appears to have gone ignored. I am writing register.com now to file for removal

1Freon1 ( ) posted Fri, 02 April 2004 at 3:02 PM

register.com is a registrar, meaning they just register domain names. The people you need to contact is the site's host. The contact info points to www.qins.net. However, a traceroute of the domain leads to www.birch.net (auto-redirects to birch.com). Birch.com looks to be a broadband provider. They are in the same area of the US (texas and surrounding areas) as qins.net, so they may be affiliated. I would send an email to both. Here are there contacts for such issues: abuse@birch.net and abuse@qins.net Since it is somewhat unclear who the host may be, make sure to clearly state the issue and the domain/location of the files so they will be able to determine if they are the actual host. It is quite possible the individual is running the website directly from a home PC, connected to a broadband connection from birch.com, using a domain registered by qins.net.

Ardiva ( ) posted Fri, 02 April 2004 at 3:16 PM

Either contact the guy by phone OR you can go to "REGISTER.COM" and complain as it clearly shows below that the website is showing it as their DNS server. 1Freon1 ( ) posted Fri, 02 April 2004 at 3:25 PM

All a DNS (domain name server) does is translate the text domain name to an IP address. Register.com is not his host, and will most likely be unable to assist you in any way other than telling you to contact his host. Stick with qins.net and birch.net.

Ardiva ( ) posted Fri, 02 April 2004 at 4:26 PM

How does birch.net enter in?

cooler ( ) posted Fri, 02 April 2004 at 4:35 PM

when doing a route trace (see below) the last hop before the actual domain is usually the domain/webhost. Looks interesting, cooler. Where were you able to go to get this information? likes to keep abreast of this sort of thing. :-)

There are utilities that will do it for you. NeoTrace is very good but Sam Spade (see link) is my favorite (besides it's free :-). You can also do it from a dos prompt on your machine by entering the command tracert followed by the domain name you're trying to track down.

Ardiva ( ) posted Fri, 02 April 2004 at 5:36 PM

Thank you for the link cooler. Will download and try that one. I use tafweb's 'whois' program from my desktop, but I'm sorry to see that it's not available for download anymore. :-(

slinger ( ) posted Fri, 02 April 2004 at 5:53 PM

Yup, one of mine (Valdris) is there, retitled "Treebastion Sig (By Iluadili)". They even shifted the colours a little.

SteveJax ( ) posted Fri, 02 April 2004 at 7:50 PM

Well one good thing came from this thread for me. Nope, Strike that, Two good things. I found Gallery Software that I can use for my website by clicking on their Powered By Gallery software link and Sam Spade can replace my old Netscan tools.

You know, we do have a copyright forum for this stuff.

Oh, I was wondering how long it would be before a member of the self-appointed Topic Cops showed up to complain! LOL! bonni

This is Poser art, it's perfectly appropriate for this forum.

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Sat, 03 April 2004 at 10:41 AM

This thread should be moved to the Product Showcase forum! uh.....shouldn't it? ((someone talked about a "Powered by Gallery" software link.......))

Someone on PoserPros whos art is being ripped off as well, phoned "register.com" and they said that they are the host.

Register.com certainly IS the host, so lodge your complaints there. One of the artists called and asked, and Register.com confirmed that they are hosting the site. Relevant thread: http://www.poserpros.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=25944 It's true that name servers don't always directly translate, but most of the time they do, and it's a pretty good place to start looking. ;-) bonni

The site is also making money off our works. If you go to your artwork on that site, you can then click on the right hand side of the page.. [print this photo on PhotoAccess].

tadashya ( ) posted Sat, 03 April 2004 at 1:22 PM

I spoke with the domain holder for this website AND register.com. All artwork done by the 'artist' (and I say that with heavy sarcasm) has been removed from the server and this ...'artist' will very likely have her board priveldges revoked for misrepresenting herself.

goldenodyssey ( ) posted Sat, 03 April 2004 at 1:30 PM

Awesome thank you for the info!!

Ardiva ( ) posted Sat, 03 April 2004 at 1:38 PM

I'm glad that this was pursued and handled well. Bravo!

slinger ( ) posted Sat, 03 April 2004 at 8:26 PM

Thanks for kicking this one off babydollTX.
The silly thing is, if somebody had contacted me and said how they liked that pic of mine, and could they use it as a sig on the site, I'd more than likely have been flattered and said yes.

Seems the site is now responding? - when Silvermage posted this link in our copyright forum at 3DA last week, there were a lot more images in that gallery :-) ~S

SteveJax ( ) posted Sun, 04 April 2004 at 5:31 PM

Hrm...let's see, so if I mention Bryce, are the topic cops gonna move this thread there instead now? How about Zbrush? Do they have to move multiple copies?

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Sun, 04 April 2004 at 7:53 PM

Well, due to the fact that you are now discussing "What should I do if......?", in a general sense -- in the light of that, this thread needs to be moved to the Community Center forum.......
