Subject: Webring Questions

simdragon ( ) posted Fri, 09 April 2004 at 5:52 AM · edited Mon, 07 October 2024 at 2:33 PM

I have just one. I thought, if you joined the webring, that you had to select one of the three codes to display on your site. I'm bored, and have started going through the sites listed for the webring. Just on the first 15 listed, I've found 2 that give error pages (Page Not Found, and You are not Authorized), and 5 with no webring code, though 3 of those do have a link to R'osity forums. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the proper webring code isn't displayed by members of the webring, doesn't that mean than anyone who may be checking out our sites by using the webring to navigate hits a dead end when they navigate and hit one of those sites? I seem to recall something being said about cleaning the webring up...I'm guessing that hasn't been done yet? I'd be happy to volunteer my time to go through the sites and make a list of those that don't display code, or have disappeared into the dark. :)

simdragon ( ) posted Fri, 09 April 2004 at 6:35 AM

I've viewed the 1st 105 sites....34 don't have code, are gone, or won't load(I have highspeed). That's roughly 1/3 of them! That's ridiculous.

manleystanley ( ) posted Fri, 09 April 2004 at 7:43 AM

Yes it is. I used to do alot of surfing; before I regestered here, and 1/3 is about average for defunked web sites. But it does seem to be an over site on someones part, although sense you have cought it have you IM'ed your list to admin?

simdragon ( ) posted Fri, 09 April 2004 at 8:57 AM

Not yet...still going through the webring. Hit 150, and 35% are gone, or don't display webring code. Then our internet went down, lol....so I was offline for an hour or so. Back to work on it, then I'll send in a list. :) I obviously have no life, eh? LOL

simdragon ( ) posted Fri, 09 April 2004 at 9:20 AM

I might add, 8 of the top 15 listed over in the sidebar have no webring code!! How do they get to be toplisted?

simdragon ( ) posted Fri, 09 April 2004 at 10:31 AM

95 out of the first 285 listed sites are gone, or don't display the code. I've had at least 2 redirects to search pages, one redirect to Officemax, one bad link(Um, Renapd, might want to edit your listing), a few sites that just would not load, etc. Taking a break...who wants the list thus far? I've got a .txt file all ready! :P

simdragon ( ) posted Fri, 09 April 2004 at 10:47 AM

Why don't they just delete all the sites in the webring, and then anyone who wants to resign up can? How many sites are listed, anyway? I know what my position is, but that doesn't tell me the total number of sites. It looks to be holding fairly firm at 33-35% of the sites being gone or not having the proper webring code. It'd be the easiest thing! :P I'm only semi-joking, lol.

deemarie ( ) posted Fri, 09 April 2004 at 12:09 PM

Hi simdragon, Due to a large variety of reasons - some sites can be offline for a short period of time - Sometimes this is due a max download - and the provider will shutdown the site on a temp basis. Thanks for the heads-up and we will be sure to take a closer look into the missing site links! You silly teaser you ;] Dee-Marie

simdragon ( ) posted Fri, 09 April 2004 at 3:17 PM

Well, I can help with a list! :) What about the sites that don't have the webring code on them?

Elsina ( ) posted Sat, 10 April 2004 at 10:18 AM

So how come my two sites (both with valid code) disappear from the listing every few months and I have to sign up again? I notice this, when the sponsor link under my images disappears. I think I have signed up maybe 6 times already.

It may have something to do with the number of referrals your site generates. By this I mean how many people get to r'osity through your webring links. I remember I used to have periods of time when no one was referred by me for a period of time (30 days or more) then I would have to rejoin the webring. Maybe that's it? I think it's part of the agreement that if your site generates no refrerrals for 30 days r'osity can remove you from the webring (lame) Also, my site's webcode is valid so go to my site (!!!). Although I am no where near the top 15 either :( Hope that helps

simdragon ( ) posted Sun, 11 April 2004 at 12:29 AM

Attached Link: Where has this site gone?

Good on you both for having valid code! My site, does too. Now, though...Creations has to resign up....why haven't the sites that are no longer viable been removed from the webring? If they aren't there any longer, don't have the webring code or a link to R'osity available, even if they do have pages saying they are closed, how can they be generating referrals?! For example, InDepth Arts, one of the top 15 listed over in the sidebar...when you click on it, comes up page not found. It has every time I've tried it over the past 3-4 days. Either they haven't updated their webring info, or the site's gone. But it's still up there in the top15. I'm not picking on anyone, just relating what I've found. I've gone through 285 sites so far, and 33% have been gone or don't display the proper webcode. Some do have links to Renderosity...but sometimes, it's their own R'osity Homepage, or their store. The webring doesn't work right for everyone, if 8 of the top 15 only have a link to R'osity with their referral code in it. That doesn't give anyone the option to surf the webring to look at other sites, and that's what a webring is supposed to be for...to spread the hits around to all of the sites in the ring. They can't be spread if webring members don't display the proper code! Every time someone decides to surf the webring, 33% of the time, they're going to hit a dead end every 3 sites or so. If, IF it holds out as I go along, checking sites, and stays at 33% being gone, or not displaying the proper code. Those sites hurt the webring, and the webring members who DO display the webring code as they should. In other words, not displaying the proper webring code isn't fair to everyone who does, so that surfers can cruise on via the webring to check out different sites. I'm going back to work on checking sites, so I can have a full and complete list for the mods, and then maybe the webring list will get it's overdue weeding out. I'll post the list on a page on my own website so anyone can check for their site....some just probably need to update their webring info, like 4F-Creations! :)

I've posted the list. I'm up to 420 sites now, 132 missing/closed/without webring code.

Hi again everyone :) Due to the long holiday weekend - the Admins who are working with the webring have been on vacation, thus the reason the webring questions have not been addressed. Thank you so much simdragon for taking the time to go through the webring and list the sites that are not functioning. I fear that part of the problem is due to a server upgrade a couple weeks ago, which seems to have sent the ebots on holiday as well. Those bad little bots, always taking off when you need them the most :) I will be sure to let the webring Admins know about this matter first thing Monday :) Wishing you all a peaceful Easter Holiday! Sincerely, Dee-Marie

critical-depth.com is here, but it's being retired. You can still access the site and the poser product reviews, but they have moved to here and have changed their name to In Depth Arts. Not sure if they've notified the web ring mods about their address and name change.

Happy Easter!

Fixed mine. I had forgotten all about it. Stike a Pose went poof on me again and I lost interest in it. Helen

simdragon...my webring code is on my "bryce" page. Thanks..all seems to be functioning there. :-)

simdragon ( ) posted Sun, 11 April 2004 at 7:28 PM

I changed that on Strike A Pose, Helen, thank you! I haven't gone through the entire webring, of course, not yet. I figure at the least, my list will give the webring mods a starting place...they could get rid of all the dead sites first! :) Thanks, Ardiva...I looked, so that I'd know which site it was. I'll do editing on my list as I go along, if people do as you guys have done and let me know. Grey_Tower, did you happen to see webring code on either of those sites? I took a quick look, planning to go back later. I look for the code on the index page, or the links page. IF there's a webring page, I check there. IF the site has several sections, I check out the galleries to see if there's a link there. I have made note of whether a link to R'osity is displayed, even if the webring code isn't. Most R'osity links I've seen so far are member referral links...have the webring member's info so that they are credited with any referrals the link generates. Which is great for R'osity, yeah, but not so great for the rest of the webring members, lol. Sometimes they just need a friendly nudge so that they edit their webring listing. I don't think anyone is purposely trying to plant 'breaks' in the webring...a lot of people don't like to have webring code on a page, especially if they're members of several. Everyone's been really great about my self-imposed little quest, and I appreciate it.

There's an error in the html code for the second link I posted in message 15 above. In Depth Arts is actually here

"I seem to recall something being said about cleaning the webring up...I'm guessing that hasn't been done yet?"

After over a year of asking for clarification on some questions about the webring and it's relationship to Renderosities TOS, it seems that very little is done to keep the links up to any sort of standard.
I gave up expecting any real action or a straight answer on the subject last year.

Just to remind the PTB!..is this image, linked above, considered Family friendly under the terms of the TOS and are they accetable links for sponsership by Renderosity?
Someone must have the answer!

The question now applies to the following image.......

This site is not considered "family friendly". It very much has mature content. Here is some updates over the webring. -http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=1531579 -http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=1359527 The webring information. -It is cleaned for deadlinks every 2 or 3 weeks by an automatic program. -We allow linking as well as placing code. -We pend all new webring entries until the content is checked and reviewed based on our Terms for the webring. -Those that do not setup there webring correctly with a link or code get deleted after 30 days. As well as those to do not impact the webring stats. Meaning no one has come through their webring to our site in 30 days. -Thanks for letting us know about the two sites on the referral listing. They have been emailed and IM to update their information. Terms of webring below. TERMS AND CONDITIONS: You may post as many art-related links to our Web Ring as you like, although we will only track the number of new members who join us through your sites. The name of the link can not be misleading. The following are unacceptable links: -Non art-related sites -Money making schemes. -Click brokering. -Link exchanges. -Sites Under Construction -Pornographic sites. -Any sites with a primary focus on images of rape, torture, sexual acts, or physical arousal. When you submit your link, it will go into pending until the legitimacy of the site and compliance with the Upload Agreement can be verified. Your link may not appear on our site until after the first referred member joins up. You may receive emails from us regarding webring information. People found trying to abuse the Web Ring in any way, or creating fraudulent accounts to boost their ranking, will be deleted from the Web Ring and possibly banned from the community. These terms are subject to change without notice. We reserve the right to pull any link at any time. If we find you have deleted your link to us, we reserve the right to remove your sponsorship links on our site. If you have any questions, please email admin@renderosity.com. If you have additional ideas please let me know. thanks tammy

"-We allow linking as well as placing code." Then the webring doesn't work the way a webring is intended to. Just a referral link on a site stops the webring surfing for those who use webrings to find sites of similiar content. If someone starts at my site, for example, uses the webring's NEXT, then: http://3d.cartoonhit.com/links/index.htm (has WR code) http://ywaters0.tripod.com/3ddesign.htm (has WR code) http://www.3dluvr.com/chrisann/ (has WR code) http://gingerstu.co.uk/ Where I deadend, because that last site has no webring code or even a link. It could have just as easily been a site that has no webring code, but does have a referral link...which would send me to R'osity. A whole five sites viewed, with the last one not even mentioning R'osity, much less the webring. I'm really not trying to be difficult about it, and I understand that R'osity allows just linking. But if you're just going to post a link to R'osity, then do that. Don't clutter the webring up with sites that are not working towards making the webring work the way it's supposed to, and thus depriving sites that do of visitors.

simdragon ( ) posted Fri, 16 April 2004 at 11:08 AM

"We do require that you use the provided link and graphic on your site...The Renderosity links can go in your Links section, but it should only be a couple of clicks away from the "Front Page". Thanks for the feedback. Go Web Ring! --Asher" - from the link given above (http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=1531579) That was from in November, 2003. So then, you had to use the proper webring code and graphic....and now you don't? I'm curious, since I've been going through the webring....were there just too many sites not using the proper webring code that the Webring Rules were changed to accomadate them? And this is unofficial? TERMS AND CONDITIONS: You may post as many art-related links to our Web Ring as you like, although we will only track the number of new members who join us through your sites. The name of the link can not be misleading. The following are unacceptable links: Non art-related sites Money making schemes. Click brokering. Link exchanges. No where in there does it say just a link is okay....it says you can post as many links to R'osity as you like on your site. I find I'm still not happy with the situation, because the webring can't be doing what a webring is supposed to do for its members, not with 'just links' being okay when people don't want the webring code on their site. If you don't want webring code on your site, then don't join a webring. If you want to be a member of a webring, then post the proper code and be a responsible member.

it is a combined feature... webring/sponsor/referral/partner program. :) not sure what to call all of that. could be that we need to rename that area. but i understand what you are saying regarding the webring. i did not hear from indepth and have removed them from the referral listing. i am continuing to work with 4F-Creations. they made some changes on their server and are trying to get those corrected. thanks tammy
