The site at the link has a lot of good star wars stuff. It is not a poser site but a lot of the stuff would be used like props anyway. They have some unusual things like jabba`s palace and a mynock. All the objects are in 3ds format and can be imported to poser.

This site has some poser characters, the jar jar binks and stormtroopers are quite good.

numanoid ( ) posted Wed, 14 April 2004 at 6:26 PM

The stuff at Vanishing Point is actually made for Poser. The other sites you will have to convert from other formats. Also search for the Stormtroopers and Darth Vader, they are available as well. Still waiting for Poser conversions of the AT-ST and AT-AT's.

The lonewolf grafix ones are made for poser.

Now that someone's reminded me, how likely is a model from Sci-Fi 3D (the link to www.theforce.net above) to import cleanly into Poser?

I've got a few ship meshes from that site, mostly in .3ds format, and some have imported fairly well, while others look like Scotty was operating the Transporter while drunk. The USS Constitution model in particular gave me a (very!) exploded view.

Is .3ds the best format to use, or would something else be more reliable? Is there anything I can do to get better imports?

I'm using Poser 4.0.3 in Win98 with 512MB of RAM, if that's any help.

SpottedKitty, so you also experienced the "exploding" Constitution? When I tried loading it into either Poser 4.03 or TrueSpace 6.6, sections and elements materialized all over the screen. A shame, too, as that is one of the best "classic" versions available. The textured backdrops for all the windows is a beautiful idea. Well, it would have been if the infernal mesh didn't look like a photon torpedo just hit it! 8-( Sincerely, Bill

xantor ( ) posted Wed, 14 April 2004 at 7:40 PM

Deep exploration can usually fix "exploded" 3ds files, I think this problem is caused by the files being the newer 3ds format that 3dsmax 4 and 5 save.

SpottedKitty ( ) posted Thu, 15 April 2004 at 2:31 AM

That sounds plausible, Xantor. Is there any way of fixing a "kaboomed" file if you don't have 3DSMax? Incidentally, I just remembered I tried to view the USS Constellation model in the demo viewer version of 3D Exploration, and it still looked just as bad as it does in Poser.

SpottedKitty ( ) posted Thu, 15 April 2004 at 2:32 AM

Argh -- I meant "USS Constitution". Bad brain cell, no biscuit for you...

Sixus has a Jabba figure available for download, It's still being developed *I think* but it is usable.

Spottedkitty, Deep exploration is a newer program made by the makers of 3d exploration and it is the only program I know of that can fix the exploded 3ds files.

JHoagland ( ) posted Mon, 19 April 2004 at 6:34 PM

You want Star Wars stuff? Just take a look at my Free Stuff: the X-Wing, B-Wing, Imperial Shuttle, TIE Fighter, and Landspeeder... all Poser figures and props. There are a number of issues when converting an existing 3ds (or obj) file to work in Poser: 1) You get a "flat" prop with no moving parts. This is good for a Star Destroyer (or Enterprise) model, but bad for an X-Wing. After all, what good is an X-Wing if the wings don't open? And if the canopy can't open, how can a person get in? :) 2) The geometry may not be "optimized" for Poser: the mesh may be triangulated or have odd-shaped polygons. This may work fine in Lightwave or 3D Studio Max, but it won't work so well in Poser. The additional (and usually unnecessary) polygons will just bog down Poser. 3) And related to that: when you convert a 3ds or obj file, it becomes a large pp2 file- any imported geometry is included into the prop. This means that there is no obj or rsr file for Poser to use as a "resource file". 4) Converting someone else's mesh usually requires their permission before you can offer it for free on your site. --John
