Subject: Sharing pose files. Must it be "cleaned" first?

Tiny ( ) posted Mon, 19 April 2004 at 8:09 AM · edited Sun, 02 February 2025 at 7:41 AM

When sharing pose files do you strip it of anything or is it the .pz2 file "as is" from the Library/Pose folders?

Anything else one ought to think of?

You don't need to do anything to the pz2 file. It's ok to distribute those as long as the pose is your own creation. In general; it is best to make sure that your poses are saved without morph target information. This has less to do with copyright, and more to do with people being upset when they apply a pose and it wipes out thier character.

If it is intended as a pose file and not a MAT pose file then no cleaning is required. Distribute it as it is.

Ok. Thank you.

Actually you want to be sure no Morph data is saved with the Poses. When you save be sure that option is not checked. It's best if you use a "blank" version of your figures that contains no morphs at all when you create your poses to share. Many people have gone through all the major Poser figures and stripped out the morphs for that purpose. Now the "DAZ version 3" characters provide a "Blank" figure as well.

You can distribute any pz2 (or other type of pose file) that you create from within the Poser interface. This is because the only information saved to a pose file created from within the Poser interface is the values for the various paramiter dials, and dial settings can't be copyrighted (in my opinion, I'm no expert on law). You can "Include morph channels in pose set", if you want, there may be technical reasons why this might not always be a good idea (perhaps the character that the pose will be applied to does not contain these channels), but there are no legal, or as far as I can see ethical reasons not to do this.

could i make a suggestion? many pose files i have downloaded, when you click them the figures face changes too, so you just lost the face you worked hours on..please be sure it's just the pose you are saving nothing else

Thank you all for the suggestions!

If you are making poses for others to use how do you seperate the face pose when saving the body pose and visa versa?

Tiny ( ) posted Wed, 21 April 2004 at 5:38 AM

I think you uncheck the head when choosing what to save?

Momcat ( ) posted Wed, 21 April 2004 at 1:33 PM

When you go to save a pose, a dialogue box will pop up to ask you if you want to retain the morphs in the pose. Choose "no". If you are saving a face, use the face library, and it only saves the face information. If you want to save a facial expression, but be able to apply it to different characters; that's whole different ballgame, and depends on the figure used.

Thanks for the help Momcat. I've been making quite a lot of faces for various models and would like to be able to share them. 8) Catlin

Re post #9:

Catlin_mc, Poser [4] has a special pallet called "Faces" that saves morph dial settings for the selected character's head. It only saves the values for the targetGeom (morph) channels, other types of channel such as scale, rotate, taper, are not included. The file extention for Face files is FC2.

FC2 files are the easiest way to save and distribute morph dial settings for the head. Of course as Face a file only saves the dial settings, the appropriate morph channels must exist in the character that Face file is applied to.

If you have included morph channels in a pz2 (pose) file and want to remove the morph settings for the head, you can use the free utility Morph Manager 4 to stripp these channels out. IMHO Morph Manager 4 Is a must have for anyone who uses Poser. Mat Pose Edit is another free utility that can do the job.

Thanks Les, if you all keep telling me the tricks I'm sure I'll be able to give something back to the community soon. BTW, is it the same setup in P5?, I used to have P4 but now I only use P5. Catlin

Can someone tell me where to find Morph Manager 4? the link in the Free Stuff section here doesn't work, and it's two years old. Is there a working link someone can provide? Thanks!
