Subject: NEEDED: Tutorial for Poser Creation in Amapi 6

Latexluv ( ) posted Mon, 19 April 2004 at 3:11 PM · edited Mon, 18 November 2024 at 6:53 PM

I posted this over in the Amapi Forum, but thought to post here as well for my friend talisman018. A friend of mine has been using Amapi 5 to make some very nice props for me to use in conjunction with Poser. She wishes to use her new Amapi 6 to begin the learning of creating conforming clothing for Poser. Could someone point me to a tutorial to send to her that is specific to Amapi 6 and conforming clothing creation? I have purchased PhilC's Tutorial Cd for her and am about to mail it to her. But I was just wondering if there was an Amapi 6 specific tutorial I could send her as well. She's doing great making prop weapons and has now started on things like bracelets. I'm her other half in the deal. I get to learn to UVMap these creations and assign groups and material zones, which I've never done before. Folks, I really believe she has the ability to make Poser conforming clothing and I want to help her in any way I can. Thanks Liz Pope

Here's one tutorial, aimed at a goal of putting the clothes in Carrara... but the first part may be helpful.

my amapi tutorial cds will cover this..however, the only one that goes into detail on using amapi with poser is the version 7 cd. It has my old site "posertech" on it. Both links are at eovia's site. The cd that covers 4, 5, and 6 will show how to use 6..and the version 7 cd will show how to make a model compatible with poser. :) BT

Got a link there for me brycetech? We attempted to load a free Quicksuit for V3 and cut some holes in it as an experiment. But she has Amapi 5 and I had to convert obj to 3ds (which probably gave us problems), then Amapi 5 was scaling and flipping everything upside down and it was a pretty disappointing mess. Amapi 6 has direct obj import and so we're hoping to have less trouble but are worried about the flipping and scaling problems. Since Amapi 6 hasn't arrived in the mail yet, we haven't had a look at the manual for it. Liz

P.S. I also got a great deal on Carrara 2, so we're hoping between one of the programs we can actually make some clothing eventually. Liz

Liz, your friend is going to love Amapi 6, I've been using it to build Poser stuff for a couple of years now, and having .obj import/export is a huge advantage. Regarding Amapi's import/export for .obj files, if you're going to be using numeric inches as your measuring units, then change the scaling factor from 1.00 to 100.00 If you prefer cm, then change it from 1.00 to 254.00 (1 inch = 2.54cm) Then make sure that none of the axes are being switched, so 'x becomes x', 'y becomes y' and 'z becomes z' (I can't remember now, but I thing the default setting switches at least one axis). This will enable you to move .obj files from Poser to Amapi and back again without any scaling or translation issues, which is very handy indeed (finally, you can make morph targets in Amapi LOL). BTW, you mentioned that you'll be doing the UV mapping - can I recommend that you get a copy of UVMapperPro (if you don't already have it). Between Amapi 6 and UVMapperPro you'll have all you need to creating Poser content. Best of luck. - Graham

Thanks Graham, I'm cutting and pasting this and sending it to my friend. I'm supposing the program will come in the mail tomorrow. Supposed to be new in the box and hopefully has it's manual. The Carrara was new and still shrink wrapped. Huge manual in there, it weighs a ton. She's made me some great props, some spiked wrist bands just tonight. She'll be in the market for a better computer too in a couple of months, so I hope we'll really be cooking. She can't find in Amapi 5 how to assign groups and material zones so I've been doing that in UVMapper (don't have pro, yet). I was pretty familiar with UVMapper, but had never done assigning of groups and material zones, so I'm learning a new trick. If you're interested, you can check out my gallery and see a few of talisman018's props on my figures. I just finished a render tonight using the spiked bracelets. Thanks again for that very, very important information!!! Liz

I have used amapi for morphs successfully.... Never had problems with the position of the mesh but sometimes it creates holes on the mesh when imported in poser... this happens when I import an obj modify it in amapi and then reinport it in poser... Does anyone have this problem too?

I only have 3 words: "Get Brycetech's CD" It is really well done. I would recommend it (and have) to anyone wanting to learn Amapi. Cheers, Joe @ 3-AXIS.com
