Subject: Transposer on the Mac

deedub ( ) posted Sat, 17 April 2004 at 4:33 PM · edited Mon, 18 November 2024 at 7:44 AM

Hi Folks. Transposer is a new plug-in from Eovia that makes it easy to import entire Poser animations into Carrara...if it works. Has anyone else tried it on the Mac? I'm running a G5 1.6 gig, the cheapest one processor model, with 1 gb of ram and lots of hard drive space. OS 10.2.8. My Poser 4 runs in the OS Classic 9.2.
The plan is to open Poser animations directly into Carrara (I use 3.0.3). When I attempt this, the Poser file greys out and is unavailable. Anyone else seen this happen?

Is the Poser file compressed? Or no?

The docs say Poser 4 or 5, but Transposer's still X-only IIRC. Maybe if you quit Poser and exit Classic after saving the pz3 file.

Poser4 has always been quirkey in Classic on my system so I quit working with it. However, P5 and Transposer work great though. It's easy to recommend spending your money... :) I've spoken with others that have been using P4 and Transposer with no issues though. With both Carrara and Poser open, updating a Poser document will not automatically update the Carrara file. The Carrara document must be closed and reopened for an update to occur. So, I guess I'm trying to say, there may not be an advantage to having access to both programs at the same time. Outside of the annoyance of quitting and restarting programs, that may simply be your best bet. :(

OK. I need to use a poser guy in a Carrara animation. I converted the poser figure (just 'bizman' to keep it simple) to a dot obj file. I asked to keep the hierarchy intact and it worked. I confess I don't know how properly to get Carrara to see the textures exported with the dot obj file. Anyway, when this didn't work, I remembered Mark's recent advice re the UV texturing in Carrara 3. I'm sure there's tons of strings about how to do this but I haven't been following them. I began opening items of the bizman hierarchy and discovered that under the the 'layers List' shaders, sure enough, there were all the Poser file parts, with their proper names. I referred the ,er shirt I think, to the 'bizman.pict' texture map, took it into Photoshop and painted stripes on the tie. They rendered! Now it's gonna take some time to assign all those little domains for the clothes, but it looks like this will work. The skin textures seem to be rendering as if covered by a partially opaque white layer, but they're there, too. Yikes! deedub

Here's the quick render of 'bizman' in Carrara. I threw a colour on one of his elbows...looks loke a bronze sculpture. deedub

deedub,

I know this is a stupid question, but did you say you tried to open the Poser file in Carrara rather than import it via Transposer? I've created scenes in both P4 and P5, saved the pz3 files and imported them into Carrara 3 via Transposer and had no problems at all. I'm running a single G4, 800 MhZ, 1 gig ram, using Panther.

BTW: For those Mac users who are using Poser 4 on OS 10.2.8, you may want to stay with Jaguar if you want to continue using Poser 4. I've upgraded to 10.3 and love it... but Poser 4 doesn't function nearly as well as it used to and the program is now acting real "glitchy". Poser 5 for Mac appears to have no problems with Panther.

I have been practising quite a bit with Carrara/Transposer with Poser 5 and my machine which is a 1.8 Mhz G5, 1.5 Gb Ram and have looked to see how Carrara uses RAM. The answer is that when it can, Carrara will try to use as much as possible and if it doesn't grab enough, textures are dropped from the imported Poser figure. When it does work, it is glorious... as in the case, where I imported the M3 Barbarian into one of the preset Carrara landscapes.

The Barbarian looks good! I found I need to read those dialogue boxes and think a little. I was being informed that Transposer couldn't locate my Poser 4. I showed the path, closed Carrara and re-opened it and now it works fine. I was nervous of converting casman to a vertex object to get his hierarchy...and delighted to find a complete UV type layers list available when I opened his texture shader. I aadmit to complete naievete when it comes to Poser. deedub

ok my Transposer question for all you guys... Has anyone imported Poser non-human characters into Carrara. I tried importing the Daz Hummer and parts were missing. I then tried the Daz VW Bug and that didn't import at all...just the lights I used to render it in Poser... Any suggestions would be great... Oh yeah, I have imported people and yes it works well...now why wouldn't non human ???

This is Darkworld's cybercycle from his Cyberwars series available at Daz3d: I quickly imported it with the default textures, placed an infinite plane with the mirror shader and rendered with an HDRI background... my guess is that it is a memory issue and that the program is doing a triage of parts.

mstudios ( ) posted Fri, 23 April 2004 at 7:20 AM

hmmm my memory? I have 2 gigs of ram...on a G4 1.25ghz, with several drives each over 60 gigs...If that isn't enough what is? If it's Transposers' memory then hopefully they will fix it in an upgrade.... until then maybe I can import the non humans as another file format until then or render in Daz Studio, which has no alphas working yet.....or wait for Poser 6 and maybe their renderer will be better...
