"...So a bench was cleared for the Geats and the brave men sat down proud in their strength. A warrior did his duty, bearing an etched cup and pouring sweet drink. The poet sang in a clear voice, and in Herot there was the joy of brave men, Danes and Geats..." - from the coming of Beowulf(translated) Congratulations, hauksdottir!
As long as that isn't "Grendel"... John Gardner's version of the story from the monster's POV. Thanks! :) (BTW, if you haven't read that book, I do highly recommend it.) My version of the epic was more ragged. About 30 years ago (cough) I tried to combine one of the Scandinavian alliterative forms with Latin end rhyme carried over from verse to verse. There are rules against misogyny, but poets don't play by the rules. Rock from rock and rafter riven, Through the cracks the snow was driven, Grendel gave them wintry greeting: Hrothgar's warriors death were given. Much lamented was that meeting (Grendel gathered men for eating), Sorrow sending, iron doors sundered, In saddened Heorot death was fleeting. etc. ...and it quickly degenerated into camp and was left undone. The structure was just too artificial. Hmm... I ought to write a new poem in pure ljodhattr along the lines of the Waking of Angantyr. We need another nice strong Viking female story. :) And now that I'm older, it might stick together better than some of the early stuff. (This one has the consistency of cold lumpy oatmeal, so anything would be an improvement!) Oh, yeah... monsters... I will be waiting to read the reviews here of Van Hellsing. My sympathies will lie with the monsters as usual unless the heroes are very, very good. Carolly
If no one broke those rules Omar Kaham might never have worked his way into the hearts of so many english speaking peoples ... Yeah, Beowulf doesn't have the sense of rhyme and time it should in english, and it seems a little dry that way but my grandmother would read it to me untranslated as a child - I didn't understand a word but the rhythm to it was incredible (perhaps it was just her talent for reading. )
Bikermouse, In the extended version of "LOTR, Two Towers", Eowyn sings in Old English as Theodred is buried... and you can hear the rhythm and the strength of the language. Tolkien's own translations are very good (he had an ear for the works of others even if some of his own poems are awful); Auden and Hollander made quite decent translations of the Elder Edda and other works. I've borrowed the new Beowulf (Chickering's translation) but haven't settled down with it yet. From the stresses in songs and poems (whether chanted or spoken aloud), we can learn how the words were pronounced. Plain texts such as a list of rules or tallies of grain shipments don't yield this information. Beowulf was a rare surviver from an immense body of oral tradition and we are fortunate that it is a good poem with stirring imagery. Imagine a philologist of the future with a copy of "Dead Man's Curve" or some rap song trying to determine America's poetic tradition (and funeral practices)! Imagine a scholarly dignified poet a thousand years from now trying to write a song in the style of "Grandma got run over by a reindeer" because it was on a rare fragment which survived the destruction of the 23rd century. (Now THAT's real horror... cue the howling wolves again.) Carolly

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA

So I suggest sympathy for the monsters, and all your ears are pricking hopefully? ;^) :chuckle: @ ernyoka... Thanks for the conviviality! @ Lyrra... I can't find it, but years ago I started a poem about a wash & were wolf. You can guess at its state of wretched dreadfulness. Some things were not meant to be brought into the light. @ Dr Geep and PhilC and c1rcle... Other evil overlords have dungeons. I have a punitentiary. ;^) You will also find kennels of half-written doggerel behind the caterwauling, but the only capital punishment is atop the caterpillers. @ pdxjims... Historically accurate clothing is a perk for the minions. Real fabrics wear better and are time-tested. No face masks, though. The tailors will be busy. :) @ Kate... Speaking of evil, it's time we got our heads together. Plump baby barbecue with turnip sauce and brownie crumb crust? Carolly
This is scary ... all I can say is, I hope and pray you have turned over a new leaf. I am being completely seriuous when I say I sincerely hope you have done a 180 regarding your negative attitude, bitterness, and hyper-critism on most of the threads I have ever encountered your input on. I'll leave it at that, and wish you luck as a moderator.
Here's to new, and hopefully, better days in the forum.
Sincerely,
Tim
