Subject: The weekend render that got away

Well, I was going to try to post 3 pics to my gallery this weekend, but it's just not gonna pan out. I have to go to (real) work tomorrow, so experimentation on this render will have to stop for now. I had seen a similar pic online somewhere a couple days ago (high-end site), and it inspired me to do one of my own. *I need to add the driver, obviously. *making a believable sand trail is eluding me right now. *needs more/various mats *etc, etc, blah, blah. Oh, this model is made by Django, his freestuff here; http://www.renderosity.com/freestuff.ez?Form.Contrib=Django&Topsectionid=0 His "speeder" model is on the 2nd page. THIS rendered model in particular, is his subdivided version with seperate parts, and actually twin gun racks which I had removed for this render, I will be hosting this specific one, when I get a chance to put it up. love the blur, the metallic mat, the shine, the dirty smog... And I feel it's moving....don't think u need to change the sand..though maybe a wee bit..that blurry mat sort of gives the feeling that the bird is in flight...

Nice render AS, looks like a real thing...is background Bryce, i cannot tell, cuz of the motion blur?

Swade ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 1:02 PM

It certainly does look real enough.... Nice work AS. What, if I might be so bold, is propelling this craft? Might just have to wait and see. 8)

Background was pre-blurred in Photoshop and put on a verticle 2D face in Bryce, it is a mix of two real photos, and two Bryce renders. Background sand is part of the photo, and foreground sand is a mat on a horizontal 2D face. I also applied a sand mat to the infinite plane, and applied the background photo to a sphere surrounding the scene. These two things were specifically done, because if I didn't, you would immediately see where the scene "ends" in the reflection of the ship. The reason for pre-blur is more realism. If I didn't pre-blur, you would see NO blur in the reflection of the ship, yet it would be blurred in the background, your eye would notice this. Ship has jet engines to propel. ;o) AgentSmith

Agent Smith, Good Work! Some sort of a negative booleaned terrain thingy that disapates over distance combined with a cloud thingy that isn't too obvious? Reply 9 deleted and re-posted (and edited - my own idea)

I've tried terrains as jet exhaust and similar, never was able to make it look good. I usually do my best with seudo-volumetrics, and volumetrics with some stretched spheres. AS

Agent Smith, I was playing around with using gelled spotlights with a gradient for exhaust around the time you posted the light pict from the P.S. plugin with that name that's hard for me to remember or shortly thereafter. At first I used the thumbnail for my windmill pict as a gel then started using patterns made in turbocad, although one of the snowflake generators might be good for that too. In conjunction with this I was playing around with that simple black sky you mentioned that you didn't like a while back along with a black ground plane and sunlight turned off with dark gray shadows. The so called space ship which looked more like Buck Rogers Ship or an old V-1 didn't want to show up too well and adding ambience only served to 2d-ify(I know thats not a word) the look of the ship so I never completed the fins and details for it, but I think the flames turned out well. I'm never able to get objects/meshes just as transparent as I want them somehow, so I know that exhaust using terrains would be a trick - if anyone could pull it off though, I imagine you could. Anyrate I guess I was thinking about disturbances on the land surface caused by the exhaust and some cloudy componet to it. Watching shuttle launches over the years I've noticed exhaust clouds are always thicker than imagined when recalled and so transparency might not be the problem I think it is. Streched spheres is pretty much how I've tried to make candles in the past both in Poser and Bryce, but I think I'll try terrain based candle flames one of these times. It sounds interesting anyway. - TJ

Lol, man biker, you are as much of a mad scientist experimenter as I am....;o) Yeah, the disturbance of the ground, yet another element I would like to add in, that would help sell a little more realism! AS

Well I'm mad anyway. I tried the speeder. Its a nice looking model but I couldn't do it justice in this render; Ill try again later. I wonder if I left the fog on or something - but anyway you can see the result of the light as a flame exhaust - I think I got it a little too transparent in the gradient editor.
