THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: I should know this but....

Zhann ( ) posted Wed, 02 June 2004 at 2:19 AM · edited Thu, 13 February 2025 at 5:32 PM

I made a model and textured it and brought both the texture template and the model into Bryce5, saved it as an OBP....well, now I can't find the original obj file(or maybe it was a 3ds) for the frickin' thing and Bryce refuses to let me export the model as anything other than an OBP, which I don't want, UNLESS, I've missed something about exporting models that have been previously imported into Bryce....so it is doomed forever to be an obp? :( Any and all help appreciated......

Cross reference the date of the bryce file & model/template to search your HD using the date filter. That usually works for me. Good luck p.s. might try *.3ds(or whatever format,OBJ etc) using the date filter too

Did you put the OBP into a scene? If you did, youd should be able to select the model, click on E and then press Ctrl+D to export it. Just tried it with one of Imported Objects in the library. Errrr, from the library into a scene. It's too early.

Hi ICM, tried it but no dice, I thought you could export from Bryce, imported models, just can't remember how...

Erlik, I'll give it a try...

Yeah, Ctrl D in Edit will let you export a previously-imported object. It can mess up the polys a bit, add extra polys, but at least you'll have it back as .obj or .3ds!

AgentSmith ( ) posted Wed, 02 June 2004 at 6:52 AM

Yup, like pogmahone says. (edit it, like you're gonna smooth it, then ctrl+D) AS

Yep...That is the way I do it all of the time between Bryce5 and Truespace6.6...

electroglyph ( ) posted Wed, 02 June 2004 at 9:12 AM

I have never been able to export multipart meshes as 3ds from Bryce 5. I wind up getting only one part of the mesh. For example, I import a watch into obp then export and get just one hand. If I export as dxf I get all the pieces. I can open in Rhino and convert back to 3ds.

Zhann ( ) posted Wed, 02 June 2004 at 11:48 AM

Hmmm, so far the meshes are all one peice, but I'll keep that in mind Electro when they are multiple parts. Thanks guys, I put a postit on the monitor of the instructions so I won't forget, and it works just fine so far....:)

electroglyph - sorry to ask such an obvious question, but have you tried ungrouping and then re-grouping the object? It helps too, if you're having problems, to delete the ground plane, move all cameras well out of the way, and do a marquee selection to be sure to be sure, then group. If you've already grouped everything, then I can't think of anything else to suggest :o|

electroglyph ( ) posted Wed, 02 June 2004 at 6:25 PM

I've tried grouping and ungrouping but since I can use dxf and obj formats as well I never gave it much thought. On the same note I could not use any of the Helmets by Pakled in 3ds from the traugs site directly in Bryce. Every time I tried to open them no object was created. If I import and then export from poser however the 3ds objects are fine in Bryce.

That is so weird......

It can sometimes be version conflict. File formats like software can have versions. Bryce can only import older versions of lightwave files, but not newer ones, etc, etc. Some formats import no matter what their version (.cob) (so far) AS

I know I'm always banging on about UnWrap3d.....but it is such a useful program for converting files from one file-type to another. It imports/exports an ENORMOUS number of file-types. Don't you just love small cheap programs that are efficient :o)

catlin_mc ( ) posted Thu, 03 June 2004 at 12:58 PM

Yes they changed the 3ds format a couple of times and some 3ds files simply will not open in Bryce.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Fri, 04 June 2004 at 2:19 AM

And; Some 3ds files import "exploded", lol. Some .obj's need an accompaning .mtl file, some don't.

Zhann ( ) posted Fri, 04 June 2004 at 2:32 AM

That's one reasom I always include the mtl files with my model objs, you just never know, and Bryce can be a pain if it doesn't find a mtl for an obj.....

AgentSmith ( ) posted Fri, 04 June 2004 at 3:03 AM

The mtl doesn't even have to have info in it. I've made blank .txt files, and changed the file extension to .mtl, as long as the prefix is the same as the obj, you're good to go. AS

That's one of the weirdest things about Bryce and obj's, I've even used .mtl's for other objects and it will still open the file. 8)
