Subject: connecting/mergin 2 terrains

Is it possible to merge/connect 2 terrain for further modeling. Let's say you create one terrain and duplicate another. Could they be joined together so I can see both in terrain editor at the same time?

No, unfortunately this is not possible in Bryces' terrain lab.

Another way, perhaps, would be to do an altitude mask render of the two terrains, bring the result into PhotoShop and get rid of the seam, then import back into the terrain editor. You'll need to increase the size of the grid in your original terrains, and the size of the render, so you don't lose definition. Don't forget to untick 'altitude mask' in the render options, after you've got the altitude render you need!

Trim using the clipping brackets. Then you can up the resolution of the grid if you want to.

PS - when you've brought the altitude render into PS, lighten it all up a bit, crop the image square, and flood the background with black. That way the clipping brackets will get rid of all the excess around the edges.

danamo - I think it should work OK even without an image editing app, you could render out an altitude mask, then delete the two original terrains, and apply the picture to a new terrain. You'd need to be starting out with very high resolution terrains, and rendering fairly large....

Ya know Pog, I do believe you're right. Come to think of it, I've created heightmaps for lattices(for an archbridge) without ever leaving Bryce. I just arranged primitives assigned with different shades of grey and rendered them from top view. There is a lot you can do in Bryce without even using an image editor.

Thanks Pog! I've found that using primitives this way is often easier and faster than painting, or using a vector-based app to make your heightmap. Maybe I should write a tut?

d7man2000 - see attached. But you need to remember to change the rendermode back afterwards, I ALWAYS forget, then wonder what the heck is going on lol danamo - I'd say lots of people would appreciate that tut :o)

thanks, I must tell you, Bryce is an amazing program, I can't believe they let it die. There is always something new discovered in it. The interface is clever too. You think you know the program but there is always something new.
