Subject: How do I create .rsr files?

I have lately been working and am almost finished with my first V3 character morphs/texture kit to submit to R'osity's free stuff area, but since I use Poser 5, how do I create .rsr files so the preview thumbnails can be shown to Poser 4 users?

You can convert PNG to RSR with P3d0Explorer (free) or you can choose not to include RSRs since Poser 4 users can also convert the PNG to RSR with that free program and it will be a smaller zipfile for you to upload. France

Not THAT much smaller, surely?! lol

Depending on the item (and since this is a character morph and texture) you'd be surprised at how much smaller it would be!!! France

Ok, going the other direction, I have the Universal Texture Converter and I want a .png of the converted texture...can I use the same program to make one or do I have to create a figure and export it to a graphics program to create the thumbnail?

If there is an .rsr, yes, P3dOExplorer will convert both ways (PNG<->RSR). If not, then the best approach is doing so from Poser. What I do is render in another 3D app (C4D) at 91x91 (standard Poser thumbnail size) and convert to .png in Photoshop. Since Poser .pngs require an alpha channel, sometimes need P3dOExploere to convert the .png to a proper Poser .png. Kuroyume

I don't have Universal Texture Converter so I don't know what the resulting files are. But from what I understand, since it converts an existing texture to fit another figure, the PNG that came with the original texture should represent the same thing as the converted file, no? If so, just copy that PNG and rename it to match the name of the new file. If you have only a cr2, pp2, etc. file, you need to render it in Poser and save the PNG file with the same name as the Poser file used to render it. If a RSR file is supplied by UTC, you can convert that RSR to PNG with P3d0Explorer like I said. France

If you render your image in Poser in a new window of 150x150, then all you have to do is save the resulting image as a PNG and name it the same as the original Poser file you're rendering. France

There's a tutorial, I think here at Renderosity, that covers this — it uses the program RSR Converter to convert between .png and .rsr (there are a couple other steps involved, I use PaintShopPro for these).

I've used it for quite a while now, and it's mostly successful. Every now and then, though, I'll get a failed .rsr and only the little shrugging man appears. I've no idea what goes wrong...

Re posts 2, 3, 4: Thumbnail rsr files are typically around the 10 to 13KB mark, and rarly get above the low 20's.

Francemi ( ) posted Tue, 22 June 2004 at 7:42 PM

I found some RSR larger than that but even if they are around 15Kb, if you have many of those in your pack, it still makes a difference. And we have to upload these free zipfiles to our own sites you know. When I download freestuff, I don't mind converting RSR to PNG before installing. I don't see why Poser4 users would mind doing the reverse. What I don't like is when I buy something and there are only RSRs (if I was using Poser4, I would not like having only PNGs in the stuff I buy). I think when you sell your work, it would be a good thing to include both PNGs and RSRs. BTW, that happens often at DAZ. France

A long while back (a few years ago) I found this nifty little utility called PictToRsr. It goes either way Pct to Rsr or Rsr to Pct. It's what I've used ever since. I render the image in poser, save it as a pct, resize it in photoshop (to 91X91) if necessary and then run this utility on it. Hope this helps Unzipped
