New DAZ "Future" Clue just released. This will "thrill" us, if we just know what this means...

37.58331, -112.21742

That's it. Anyone know what these numbers mean reguarding DAZ aquiring a "company" or "asset"? I subtracted the second from the first, added up the sums, got different shorter numbers, etc.

ynsaen ( ) posted Tue, 22 June 2004 at 11:02 PM

Those are coordinates. wether it's in realspace (IE, longitude and latitude) or 3D space is unknown without further frame of reference.

One thing I tried was adding up the numbers, then subtracting the second from the first, and got: 6.4 Hmmmmm?

PapaBlueMarlin ( ) posted Tue, 22 June 2004 at 11:07 PM

where are you getting these DAZ clues?

Veritas777 ( ) posted Tue, 22 June 2004 at 11:08 PM

Who's got a map? What geography coordinates are those?

Veritas777 ( ) posted Tue, 22 June 2004 at 11:09 PM

From the DAZ PC Forum- Brian Brandenburg posted it as the last tease before tomarrow's "Big Announcement"...

coldrake ( ) posted Tue, 22 June 2004 at 11:14 PM

It's the coordinates for Bryce Canyon. :D Coldrake

ynsaen ( ) posted Tue, 22 June 2004 at 11:16 PM

Well, as a geographical location, it's in the area of Cedar City, Utah (which is really gorgeous and one of my favorite places in the world).

Sure enough, coldrake is right -- Bryce canyon it is.

Does it mean the price will go up? better get Bryce 5 now- ...unless DAZ plans to sell it for less or give it away to P.C. Members...

ynsaen ( ) posted Tue, 22 June 2004 at 11:35 PM

oh, but of course it will be discounted to PC members. membership has it's advantages...

ynsaen ( ) posted Tue, 22 June 2004 at 11:38 PM

no, the real question in the air is what will they do with it. Bryce was once THE terrain software. Terragen and Vue are up and comers who've had development beyond it's current level. They will have to either repack it as an entry level terrain system (likely, I'd think) and come up with a port to D|S, or else start developing it. I question the developmental capabilities there. They can prolly do it, but I'm reminded of a creedence clearwater revival song...

[insert one laugh icon] I think it's an interesting aquisition, and I'm happy for Brycers. It'll be interesting to see what DAZ does with it. I'd also love to see it in the PC for $199... I thought I was the only one who heard that. :D I really don't see offhand why having Bryce would be that big of a deal though; it takes even longer than DAZ Studio to render anything. ;) I'm waiting for Terragen to have OBJ import capabilities myself... xantor ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 12:33 AM

They are buying bryce, Why???

xantor ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 12:36 AM

Terragen 2 looks pretty good, they have demo animations at there site. This must be like a typical bryce forum post. (I hope that that isn`t counted as flaming)

MachineClaw ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 12:38 AM

Please tell me this has to be another joke. I guess it will give D|S beginner modeling, atmosphere, interesting texture generation and terrain. however even bryce 5 can't export anything but terrain. How exactly could this get more people into the poser community? I mean, over the last year Daz is al about more people in the market so they can sell content, D|S blah on and on. Generally more Brycers are poser users, not always, but since both applications started at MetaTools, then Metacreations, wha's the point. Offering Bryce for $1.99 would certainly generate more PClub memberships if only in a monthly influx. Oh gewd, great, Daz starts selling Bryce content. Oh ick. About as earth shattering if true as Bill Gates buying The Davinchi Codex and not being able to pronounce it's true name.

Veritas777 ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 12:46 AM

Bryce has an Easter Egg since the last Metacreations version (4.1) that exports OBJ, LWS, COB, 3DS, etc. It seems to me that DAZ would have to BLOCK this little hidden trick or DAZ content will leak out the back door... I still use B4.1 (meta version) but Vue 4 more often. But I am REALLY now looking forward to the new Terragen. The teaser pics are really Awesome and it is supposed to handle imported 3D models. Easpecially like the clouds- they are by FAR the most realistic clouds of ANY 3D app ever made.

06/May/2004, Matt Fairclough Primary development of Terragen will now be based on Planetside Software's TGD technology. TGD is so named because it is the fourth incarnation of Terragen, and is a significant advance beyond Terragen v0.9. TGD is a complete rewrite of Terragen from scratch, and enables us to further develop the software much more quickly. Cutting-edge adaptive subdivision renderer. Modular, plugin-based architecture. Render entire planets, sweeping vistas, tiny rock gardens, or anything in between. Import 3D objects for rendering. Export high resolution objects. Render millions of boulders or trees using "instancing"; even billions of virtual objects (in development) Add multiple heightfields to your scene. Use procedural terrains that can span an entire planet. Apply almost "infinite" fractal detail to terrain and other objects. Overhanging terrain using procedural displacements, image-based displacements, or imported geometry. Volumetric clouds or fast "2.5D" clouds. Production quality anti-aliasing and motion blur. The core technology in TGD was used to render planets for Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002 (article in Cinefex 93) and is now being relied upon for hundreds of CG terrain shots in a big budget film for 2005.

MachineClaw ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 12:59 AM

Daz buyin Terragen makes more sence to me. Terragen engine is being used in movies and would give Daz a push into an area they want to go in. but Bryce?

westonmi ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 1:01 AM

Even at $1.99 I doubt that Bryce will ever share harddrive space with Terragen on my computer. :P And for the price of Bryce5 one can register a copy of TG (and get that amount off the price of TG2 when it comes out). I'm beginning to think it's probably some plugin deal with Corel to be able to import Poser content into Bryce.

MachineClaw ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 1:03 AM

What else could be in bryce canyon? maybe it's not bryce at all.

westonmi ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 1:07 AM

I could see DAZ hiring Matt to help with developing a render engine like TG has...but I seriously doubt Matt would sell TG. Matt worked for DigitalDomain for about two years and if they couldn't pry it out of his hands...hehehe

westonmi ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 1:10 AM

"What else could be in bryce canyon? maybe it's not bryce at all." Boulders? Wait I know what it is!! It's the announcement of the new DAZ Mil Boulder!!! It goes from being a mega boulder to being a tiny pebble with just a twist of the dial!! Of course you need the Mil cube for the Mil Boulder to work... :P

MachineClaw ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 1:15 AM

LOL. This just doesn't fit with Daz business model of the past, and where they are trying to go. Huge asset to buy with little profit payback, and it just doesn't fit as a busines model that they have been living by.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 1:18 AM

No, westonmi ... although it's indeed true that the Millennium Boulder is derived from the MilCube geometry, it's a standalone item. I hear the mesh has been regrouped, and thus is not compatible with existing MilCube morphs ... although the textures will probably work with some minor adjustment.

numanoid ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 1:23 AM

ROTFLMAO at Little Dragon and Westonmi!!!!!!

westonmi ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 1:29 AM

Oh say it isn't so!! All those morphs for the Mil cube...they are so unqiue and would be perfect for all the nekkid Mil Boulder in a temple with a sword renders...

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 1:34 AM

And it'll have to be "nekkid", because the MilCube conformers likely won't fit the MilBoulder either, without major tinkering. Expect a new conforming moss and lichen pak sometime shortly after its release.

Veritas777 ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 1:38 AM

Mil Boulder, SR 1- I still think Movida won't be happy...

numanoid ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 1:42 AM

I had better start work on an add-on texture pack. With the right textures the MilBoulder can be used for pottery clay, dough, silly putty, a meteor and an asteroid. Do you think DAZ will release some free poses with it?

MachineClaw ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 1:47 AM

Veritas hahahaha. Mil Boulder, still chipped.

westonmi ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 1:48 AM

Oooo pinup poses for the Mil boulder would be awesome!! ;)

numanoid ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 2:00 AM

Hope they remembered to make it Mimic compatible. And named the parts correctly for the Walk Designer.

xantor ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 3:28 AM · edited Wed, 23 June 2004 at 3:43 AM

The millenium boulder a 50 megabyte wavefront object and a 40 megabyte cr2 with the stinkin injection morphs too for only $60 They could have spin-offs from the millenium boulder too.
The millenium pebble for example.

Dale B ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 5:06 AM

Hmmmm.... That may not be as daft a move as it seems. As was pointed out, both Bryce and Poser share a common origin company....and there =was= considerable development work on B5 before it was axed by 'The New Corel'. If they -do- obtain it, then they would have the right to change the format import, and finally -make- Bryce fully Poser import compliant. A second deal to include something like the Suzanna animation proggie to import Poser anims into Bryce, and there you have something a lot of people have asked for over the years. Now consider content. Offering a cheaply priced repackage of the old P4 content as .br files. Upgrade the shader system, and you might just have something (or for that matter, what if the core of that shader system is destined to go under the hood of DS? P5 is catching on, and DS is slipping. This could be another financial hedge. DS -may- prove out to be a wonderful Lightwave plugin...only. But with Bryce, that would give them a terrain generation app compatible with Poser, again keeping in mind we don't know =what= hooks Metacreations may have had ready for usage, or were added before Corel stopped work. And it would be more P4-PA compatibility than P5....keeping in line with previous statements) Just getting Bryce is kinda nice. What they -do- with it is going to be the big issue...

xantor ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 6:18 AM

It would be good if they make bryce compatible with poser including animations. Daz studio needs some major rewriting to be fast enough just to be usable. If they made bryce compatible with poser and daz studio then that would be even better.

randym77 ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 7:50 AM

Bryan suggested that we'd be able to import DAZ content to Bryce. He didn't say Poser content. To me, that says D|S will get a Bryce plugin, or Bryce will get a D|S plugin. Not necessarily that Poser and Bryce will be compatible.

xantor ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 8:10 AM · edited Wed, 23 June 2004 at 8:11 AM

Maybe he meant products that daz make. If they only do the new daz format then it will be almost useless.

I am not a platinum club member but if I was I would urge daz to make bryce poser compatible and not just daz compatible.

I wouldn`t race out to buy bryce just because I could use daz stuff with it. They make a lot of good stuff but other people make more things for poser. They could make bryce daz AND poser compatible.

randym77 ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 8:17 AM

What if they give Bryce away, like they are giving away D|S? Would you use it then?

PapaBlueMarlin ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 10:03 AM

I've never cared for the D|S interface. Its way to difficult to select and move individual body parts. But maybe what DAZ wants to do is integrate poser and bryce into one program which would be DAZ Studio.

randym77 ( ) posted Wed, 23 June 2004 at 10:13 AM

As has been pointed out in other threads, with Bryce, DAZ acquired the rights to use the Poser-style interface - even with D|S. So D|S could have the familiar Poser look to it.
