Subject: P5 Material...How do I do this?

iamonk ( ) posted Mon, 05 July 2004 at 9:01 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 9:37 PM

I want to change ONLY the Bump, Displacement, and Transparancy with a preset. I ripped apart the file, but the Diffuse color changes to a pale blue, and I didn't leave that part in. Otherwise it works.

Ah, yes ... Tidy-Bowl blue. I'm so familiar with it. That's the limitation of P5's node-based material structure. You can't do partial MATs with it, as far as I discovered. A P4-style partial MAT will still work, but that won't give you access to the Bump and Displacement channels.

This is just a wild guess because I don't understand exactly what you want to do but have you tried copying all the material parts from your pp2 and create a matfile with this data, changing only the parts you want to change? France

LittleDragon is correct from what I found as well. In trying to rework the technique of using the Blendor Node for make-up, tattoo, etc applications I found that that the P-5 MAT files must include all the node settings whether you want to change them or not. If I had changed the skin tone by adjusting the Diffuse Color settings it would reset the to the affore mentioned blue unless you included the Diffuse Color settings. That means a different MAT file for each skin tone change and each Make-up or tattoo. Some of my models would have had 80 MAT files just for those changes to occur and then the user would have to remember which skin tone they had applied to the texture or the head and body would have different tones. Sorry, that appears the way it works for now unless CL fixes it. don't hold your nreath according to Tech Support from CL. Dale

The thing is, MAT files are a hack anyway. Poser was never really designed that way, so a hack that works in P4 that doesn't work in P5 shouldn't surprise you. (It does suck that it doesn't work, of course; I've recently upgraded to P5 and I certainly wish it did work!). Hopefully, if CL actually releases a Poser 6 (and as of now there's no real reason to think they won't0, they'll see the widespread use of MAT poses and will include them as part of the program for real. bonni

Poop! I was really hoping that something was overlooked, like via the Alternate Diffuse, but that doesn't work either. Double Poop!

Disappointing, isn't it? This is one of many things I truly hope they address in Poser 6. Being able to create and apply partial node-tree MATs would give the Material Room a powerful boost and improve our workflow considerably.
