Subject: Can't get into some Poser sites - Anyone understand this?

FishNose ( ) posted Sat, 10 July 2004 at 3:58 PM ยท edited Sat, 01 February 2025 at 6:03 AM

I usually cruise around the Poser sites every day - but for the last week I've had a very odd problem. Last week I switched ASDL provider (up to 10mbit now) and right after that suddenly I couldn't get into Animotions, 'Rotica or Faeriewylde any more. Everywhere else works fine. !!??!! Those 3 sites all are parked on the same servers I believe - Diane (Dthuregrif) hosts them all. But why on earth is this happening.... I can go absolutely EVERYwhere else - even the oddest places lol. I didn't change anything in my options/profiles, or in my virus checker/firewall. No proxies, no new things. I've tried bypassing my router, switching off everything including web filter, real time checker, firewalls, the works (scary). And still no go. What gives? :] Fish

I had a similar problem getting to Planit3D a couple weekends ago, but that was apparently server-related. I also tried everything you listed above in hopes that it was just my machine or net, but nothing at my end helped. Once Monday rolled around and somebody reset something all was fine. Have you tried a ping to the server or get something like Trace3D from snapfiles.com in the network apps section and see if you can trace a route there at least. Cooler found a suspected problem when he trace-routed to P3D and found a server inline with an 80% packet loss. I tried NeoTrace but that didn't report the stalled server for me, Trace3D did. One last idea, you could delete your cookies for those three sites and see if that helps (once you establish that it's not a server or hop problem).

I doubt it's a route or server problem. Other people I know get the fine. Cookies.... hmm, I should look into that. :] Fish

Nope, I tried dumping the cookies, no difference :o( :] Fish

Might want to check with your DSL provider and see if there is a problem with thier local DNS router. We had that problem a few weeks back and couldn't even get to our own site. Rebekah

Try getting there with a different browser (if you use MSIE, try Netscape or vice versa). Sometimes... it works ;o) France

FishNose

There must be a router problem between you & enterprise3d.com (host for all 3). I just checked & all the sites are online but even though the main server is less than 90 miles from me, response times are very slow (average about 1500 ms & 14 hops) as opposed to planit3d which is in England & the average response time is about 900ms & 15 hops.

You are probably timing out before you can connect to any of the sites. [edited for geographical correction :-]

Fishnose, it would help if you provided the exact error message and any other pertinent data.

Try a web-proxy service. If you can get through just fine using one of those, then something's up with one of your local service provider's servers (and not the site's.) Running a tracert to the site in question might also show exactly where the trouble is. Then it's just a matter of letting your provider know about the trouble, and them being "on the ball" in regards to fixing it.

Error msg: All I get is the standard Explorer "The page cannot be displayed" thing. I've also tried Netscape, same trouble there. Another note: I tried conecting to the web via my ancient dailup modem, which goes through another provider. And I could reach those sites right away! Slowish of course but no prob. Mysteriouser and mysteriouser.... I could try linking to enterprise3D. Be back. :] Fish

Yeah, enterprise3d.com does the same. No surprise. :] FIsh

Worth noting: In Netscape I get the immediate message "Host www.animotions.com contacted. Waiting for reply" so I can see that I'm actually getting contact. But it never manages to get anything more from there. And then the error popup finally comes up and says: "A network error occurred while Netscape was receiving data. (Network error: Connection reset by peer)" - which I guess occurs because the server at the other end gives up after a while. :] Fish

Same here, it's timing out when it gets to enterprise3d according to my tracert.

Howdy folks, I had a chance to do some additional digging & it seems there is some sort of cascade failure going on here in the midwest USA (currently 8 servers & growing). Milwaukee & Madison Wi, St. Louis, & Chicago are periodically slowing down to a crawl or crashing totally. All you can do is be patient until the problem is fixed or they find a way around the bottleneck (they're currently trying to route through Washington DC) all the DSI sites will either be extremely slow or totally unreachable.
