Subject: Tell me about "The Popes of Poser"

Casette ( ) posted Fri, 25 June 2004 at 9:21 AM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 6:22 PM

Hi guys An answer to a question that I have posted in a 3d forum gave me the idea that Poser Webs and 3D Worlds are dominated not by big enterprises but single peoples. I have earded of Diane from Renderotica, Sydd Raven from RDNA... Im a little new at this matter, anybody can resume the Families or Houses about it? Best wishes, Casette.- (I expect that the title wouldnt offensive to anybody, its translation literally of a spanish expression and not an attack to the Pope or religious believings) ;)

Good question. There's an awful Lot of them. I'll add in the following: Traveler Nikitacreed Eowyn Mec4D (currently) and end my list there before I start moving into the realm of the unmentionables...

Off the top of my head I recall getting the most help from Dr Geep and Little Dragon. I'm sure there are many many others but those are the two that spring to mind.

My question Im afraid wasnt clear so... I ask not about designers, but about The Bosses, Designers-Or-People-Who-Have-The-Keys, Those who have websites with communities, lots of registered members, etc... "the Popes"

For example, in my question PhilC is a guru (thanks for the term, Sam) and Sydd Raven a Pope (Popesse? :))

Communities with lots of members? Mehndi - Poser Pros Diane Thuregrif - 'rotica, et al Should note that Traveler, nikitacreed, Judith, Chrisjol, Syyd Raven, and Colm Jackson are all behind RDNA Thorne and Sarsa - Faeriewylde & Faeriedreams These are not the most influential people in poserdom, although some of them are mamong them. The People who have the keys is a changing list and is much, much much longer than merely the above. You'd have to include the forces behind DAZ and Rosity, as well, of course, and 3DCommune, etc. etc. etc. Size of membership isn't necessarily a good indicator.

ynsaen, not so important the number of members but yes catching the idea (remember I think in spanish) ;)) Thanks for the information!!

ahh -- ok -- had to clarify (I married a mexican, so I only live with spanish ;) -- and usually not without a fair bit of confusion on my part...) ok, Then I'll add in Mec4D, DaCort, Plan-it 3d (fitzy would be hurt if I didn't). Damn, I'm gonna forget so many.... Mec4D = Catharina Harders DaCort = several people who are sort of "outside" the rosity sphere (old politics) Some sites that are sort of useful to know becuase the people who might not sell a lot but have strong influence through art or opinon or experience: 3D Arena - sorta good place if you want to catch ironbear or Dodger but can't take Poser Pros Digital Babes -- Kozaburo has had more influence on Poser images than any other single person. Penguinisto's site, which I do not have a link for handy. man... There are so many that are lost to us now, too.

Steve shanks Dark Whisper Diane Thurigrif Ironbear Renapd Kozaburo Rbtwhiz Dcort PhilC Traveler Sydd Raven Colm Jackson Mec 4d Nerd Dr.Legume nikitacreed Virus Bushi I could probably come up with a list of about 200 people. These ranging from people who found new discoveries in poser and used them and introduced us all to them to people who have been here since the begining (or close enough to it) Who also changed the shape of Poserdom. People like virus, Fasttraxx and anton who were big with Poser props guild. Tim and Tammy who bring us Renderosity. The great team at Daz who bring us content for our addictions. Diane who runs rotica, Thrallord who's site did make a difference but is gone now. Dendras and Radart and davo for their utter weirdness :) Rbtwhiz, nerd, and ajax who discovered things to make poser work better and the list would go on and on..

ynsaen ( ) posted Fri, 25 June 2004 at 12:24 PM

There's also the obviously humble stormrage, whose works have long pushed the boundaries of what was thought possible and whose words often kept the lurking many keenly aware of what was going on...

ynsaen ( ) posted Fri, 25 June 2004 at 12:37 PM

hmmm. I am. :) Hell, I'm all but ecstatic to see you post! I've lurked forever. The first posts I ever read involved you and Ironbear and Kammerer and Syyd. damn but I'd love to remember them again. I think they were in the tavern, though. Taught a lot of people things because you tried them. They taught those things to others, and inspired others. yeah, you're there...

I've got a couple that aren't on your list Stormrage but there are a lot of parallels (of couse we've been around here just about the same amount of time :-) Here's my entirely subjective list of Poser people who influenced & in some cases continue to influence me (in no particular order) nerd rbtwhiz PhilC Hellborn Maz Catherina Harders Steve Shanks/Renapd SteffyZZ Traveler Anton Kozaburo Thorne Diane codeman Mitch Janssen Allerleirauh TLaubach DCort bloodsong/maclean/& everyone else who used to hang in the chatrooms & help out when I was just a modeller-in-training-pants :-)

Stormrage ( ) posted Fri, 25 June 2004 at 1:41 PM

ynsaen.. Yep i think most of them are gone with the tavern. It was fun back then though :) Cooler.. ohh definately all of those.. Thinking Let's see then you should add, tygerlander, schlabber, Cal, cooler, lalverson, maclean, robinwood, billyT, foxhollow, leemoon, daio, bebop, ghastley, rubio, sergemark, robertsharkey, emperorken, lemurtek, bloodsong, snowsultan, spike, ffabris, Hokusai, katetheshrew, bonestructure, jimburton, thip, Xurge, lordswarrior, xtinction, johnW, Lady Cherry, Styxx, Vethril, joatmon, georgeDeep, mobius, the3dwizard, hmman, lanie, confusious, edarsenault, JackKammerer, .... The names go on.. so many people who honestly changed Poserdom for the better, who gave so much .(Yep gave this list came from my freebies list, ) who gave all they gave and really do deserve the title of Poser guru. sad thing is some of these people aren't around anymore :(

ynsaen ( ) posted Fri, 25 June 2004 at 1:46 PM

too many of them. yet another reason for you to hang in there, like cooler does. Questor, too. Except now he's gone. Quoll (lordy, how can we forget poser arcana?) -- but he's gotten distant too. Ya'll got quiet. any idea how hard it is to get a good laugh and lurk when all the coolest folks are silent....

And that list makes me feel old.. and it's only been about 5 years at the most :0 ynsaen.. I don't know if i fall in that catagory but if you think so I am really honored. :) My time in poserdom has been fun and full of opportunities and fun people. I enjoy it all greatly. And I love giving back to the community that has given so much to me. (trust me it has given a lot.. over 100 cd's full of poser content all for free over the years) for me.. it's fun and work. And I really just love being a part of it. Even if some people wish i'd just leave already ;)

Yeah -- he's got a post up at 3D-Arena -- I only ran across it the other day. I haven't asked Janet what she's heard -- prolly should now. And I really really think so, stormrage. And Snow -- the reason my jaw dropped in that other thread is sorta based on the same thing. Sorta shocked me to see a compliment (I still get starstruck. lol!) ah dammit! now I'm gettin maudlin!!! DraX

^ and who do you think taught her? ;-) The people mentioned so far are all second and third Generation users. JeffH, JKeller, Kevin(old Tech forum mod),FT and heck........I'll even toss in my name as well. Are the folks who taught and paved the way for all the people mentioned in the above lists. I remember Jeff telling me once he had to explain to Anton what an .obj file was. The people who began this whole "Hacking then Teaching" thing have stopped posting for the most part. And moved on to solving other technical problems. The people who started the whole thing very rarely get credit for what they started. So I thought I'd toss in their names just so the new users know that the folks they talk to now, actually learned their tricks from a previous generation that rarely gets mentioned, because they are not posting much anymore. They are the true Popes of Poser in my eyes. -ScottA

ScottA brings up a good point. His mentions, and steve's just now, predate Poser 4. Most of the main mentions previous gained the most attention post P4. It takes nothing away from any of them. We all owe everything to those who have come before...

I've been at this site since about 2 months after it changed to Rosity, and modded this forum for about 3 years. I made my share of idiot mistakes, but I like to think I did more good than harm. In the time I modded the following advances were made and became universally used: transparancy mapped layered hair. MAT poses and other edited poses. Morph Injection (had existed, but never was used). EasyPose. Partial poses. Without the Poser using community, poser would not look anything like it does today. Lyrra

A fun trip down memory lane. Thrallord introduced me to Poser (at the time I had only just ordered Bryce and it hadn't arrived yet in the mail). I'd add Maz to the list. Foxhollow has already been mentioned. Traveler, too. I asked them all silly questions when I was new. I just saw a name of someone posting a lot in the forums and away I would send a question. Some oldies may have changed their names and be lurkers now. For reasons I can't go into at the moment, I changed my logon name. Once, in a galaxy far, far away, I was called Dreamspinner.
