Subject: How much lost Poser content is there?

gagnonrich ( ) posted Thu, 22 July 2004 at 10:33 AM · edited Thu, 07 November 2024 at 8:31 AM

Occasionally, I'll go searching for free Poser content on the net and find sites that no longer exist. Merchants drop out of Renderosity MarketPlace and DAZ either for disputes or lack of sales or whatever. People get into things and eventually move on to others. Finding stuff for P4 figures certainly isn't as easy as it used to be. Not surprisingly, there's little for sale for P4 figures. It's gotten me to wondering how much is gone and not likely to ever be seen again. There's probably no way to even begin to estimate how much is lost.

My visual indexes of Poser content are at http://www.sharecg.com/pf/rgagnon

I have seen a number of posts from people who have items that are not worth wasting web site space on because of the small demand. There are still a couple of sites for Posette (P4 woman). I am using the P5 characters - those really are not well supported.

funny you should mention that..about every 3 months I go through my URL listings, and visit all the sites..those that show up as '404' go into a file called (natch) '404.
Since I started doing this about a year ago, I've got a couple hundred sites in it. A lot of these are someone getting a hotmail account in a hurry, posting a few things, and then disappearing when the limit on downloads go over, etc. The thing to do is to download it if you even think you're going to use it..and just burn it to a CD. I've got about 96 filled so far, about 16,000 items, and it's worked out fairly well. There's several Posette sites (Posette forever is one), and Freestuff here sometimes has stuff for her as well.

The biggest thing I've learned is.....If you like it, download it today, because tomorrow it might be gone!

Archivers don't get a lot of recognition, but culture couldn't survive without them. I doubt that anything in the Poser world is quite as great as, say, the works of Archimedes or a lost Mozart symphony, but taken together it's a huge mass of good art and technology.

I have, at this point in time, 103 CDs of archived Poser stuff, almost all of the character stuff P4-oriented, since I rarely use the MilFolk. I've managed to expand that inventory by taking textures designed for other characters and adapting them over via Photoshop for use on my little P4Guy, and I've found methods of adapting outfits for use on Ichiro, even though they were designed for something else (and nope, folks, I dont use Tailor or Texture Converter; it's all done by hand). There's some gorgeous stuff no longer available: one of my favourites was an Italian site that had page after page of textures for the basic P4 clothing, both male and female -- gorgeous stuff that played with transparency and bump maps. Now it's gone, but I still managed to snag it all before the site disappeared. Lots of older sites like that are gone (anyone remember John on the Run?), and it's a shame there's not a library of sorts for them.

Thanks to my external harddrive dying on me a couple of hours ago I just lost 79Gb of poser goodies, backup more often than every 6 months or risk losing loads :(

LOL true Sean.. forgot about that. I can honestly say btw all my poser disks are poser stuff. my pz3's are saved to other cd's so the 130 cd's are pure poser props, lights, clothing, and so forth and so on.. I've slacked off the last year or so and now only download what I do use otherwise i'd probably be at 200 cd's by now

Sean, Speaking about John on the Run, I just checked an old link I had and the page opened with a note they were updating. Don't know how long that has been there tho.

That's been there for a year, easy.

It's really a shame for people coming new into Poser now - all those classic props and textures that were available, say, three years ago are now lost. It would be so beneficial for the community of there were some way of pooling all those things into a communal archive that preserved them for posterity. Obviously, it's objectionable to "share" commercial items, but these things were released for free, and are no longer supported by their makers (many of whom have departed the community altogether).

"how much is gone and not likely to ever be seen again" "The thing to do is to download it if you even think you're going to use it" Can anybody see a link between these two statements? The downloader's eternal quandary: if I download it now, the site might go over bandwidth and disappear; if I wait until I actually need it, the site might have gone over bandwidth and disappeared. :( BATlabs' free stuff is a case in point. Also, don't forget all the sites that used to be free, but have cut back or converted to subscription: PoserWorld, The Props Guild, Poser Fashion, Morph World...
