Subject: about voting

Hi all, Just a question. Many times I press the button, named "VOTE FOR THIS IMAGE" But much more times I never leave a comment. Why? I like an image and many times I have problems to subscribe why I like a certain image; problems to translate my feelings in the English language about a certain image. Sometimes I give a comment in my own language (Dutch) or my second language (German) when I know the artist can read it. But I think that is impolite for the people who cannot read those messages. Therefore my question for the administration: Is it possible to get a message when people just viewed and voted on your image, but never leave a message for some reason? Now we are recieving a back-message when people left a message in the "Provide Your Feedback Below" box. But IMO that is not so needful; I can read which people are given a certain comment and when it's needful, I can give a back message. Hoping I could explain it all in correct English. And how do you think about this item? Please, don't use too much difficult English expressions; there are many Rendorosity members which have not so much knowledge about the English language.

"Is it possible to get a message when people just viewed and voted on your image, but never leave a message for some reason?" I will mention this to admin, as it is a good point. In the meantime, you could just send the artist an IM stating that you voted. Nick

That would be great Nick I think it would also help in the extended amount of time it takes to vote and comment gosh that would be great whether a language situation or just plain don't really want to take the time gosh we are all human sometimes there just isn't enough time to do it all yet you still want that artist recognized for good work Carolyn

It would be great, wouldn't it? I often vote for something I really like, but don't leave a comment. It would be nice for the artist to know that you cared enough to view and vote without that darn V thing needing to be left behind in the comments section. Miriah

I am curious---why is it important to let someone know you voted on their image? Why is it important to know just who voted for your image? I like being able to vote on an image without letting anyone know I voted for it. That way, no one thinks I am 'playing a favorites' game. It should be anonymous!!! A comment should be enough to let someone know you liked their image.

I agree with kansas: I much preferred it when people didn't feel the need to indicate that they had voted all the time. One of the good things about the voting system is that if it is used anonymously it's not open to accusations of being used to try to garner votes and comments on your own stuff.

OK, this is, as far as i can remember, my first input into the fractalforum. I started out here on RR in early march, and it took me about 3 months before i figured out what those V things meant ... That was at the time that i discovered that there was such a thing as a "hot20". To my surprise I was in there ...grin... I started using that V in my messages, because that way i can let someone know his work is something else. Just telling them that their work is realy special, doesn't do much good, since 99% of comments are telling the poster that his work is great and spectacular. So, I use it as a Xtra gradation on a work. I know i could do that with IM too, but i can hardly keep up with the massive amount of work posted here already, i never write "thank you" IM's, and then i still have to create my own work, do my work in the shelter, keep my house in order, go for long walks on the beach with my dogs and try to keep Linda happy ... So, a system where, with one click, i could let someone know that her or his work means something special to me, would be a great help and a real time saver. As for "playing the favorites game" I can see and understand that point, but doing the voting anonymous, wouldn't do much to stop that practice, because people can still IM each other to tell them that they voted, so ... Ah well, back to the comments, think I'm about 3 days of works behind ;-)

I agree with kansas and SimonKane, I also like to be anonymous when I am voting for images. However, it might be nice to have each image carry the number of votes that it has received like it does the number of comments and rankings. The voter could still be anonymous, but the total number of votes would be discernable to the artist.

Fractals will always amaze me!

kansas ( ) posted Mon, 26 July 2004 at 1:06 AM

Well Vivian, maybe knowing the number of votes would please some people, so I could go along with that. Like Urchin1996, it was a long time before I ever checked the Hot20. And that first time was because someone sent an IM to congratulate me for having one of my fractals there. Even now, I often forget to go there to check and see whose work has been voted on.

kimpe ( ) posted Mon, 26 July 2004 at 10:26 AM

How about a switchable option to be anonymous or not. Like the IM when someone replies to a thread your on. So you could have so and so voted for you and ## anonymous votes. Give the people a choice.

abmlober ( ) posted Mon, 26 July 2004 at 12:03 PM

I think, as soon as voting is no longer anonymous or there is a switch option, I'll stop voting at once. Even the V thingie is too much IMO. If I could read in the image statistics that an image is voted n times (analogon to the view statistics) it would be enough. There is already the "comments trading" phenomenon (if you don't comment on my images I won't comment on yours or if you do then I'll do too), I do not want to have a votes trading too...

I'm an anonymous voter, too. Sometimes I would rather spend time looking at images rather than leaving the umpteenth "wonderful" comment. I frequently visit, vote, and leave. That way I can always vote for the art, rather than the artist. The added plus for me is that the artist has no reciprocal "obligation" to visit, comment, or vote for my images. It makes me happy to vote for an image that I think deserves a nod!

kansas ( ) posted Mon, 26 July 2004 at 11:25 PM

Good point Andreas and Panny. I really like anonymous voting. I don't like the ratings either. I am getting a bit overwhelmed with this commenting business. In fact, I have been thinking seriously about not checking to receive comments on my posts.

abmlober ( ) posted Tue, 27 July 2004 at 3:24 AM

I only check the Hot20 of the galleries I seldom visit... Fractal or 2D Hot20 do not really interest me. On the other hand images in the Hot20 receive more views and comments than others... So for all the comments addicted people like me the Hot20 is a good medicine against the GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT :-)

I offered the suggestion for review. There is no firm answer on this yet, but I don't think it will happen. I am really thinking now that, like I stated before, if you want someone to know you voted, just send an IM. I really am liking the anonymity in voting in the Challenges, and think now that the same should hold for the Hot 20. As far as ratings go, you can always leave that box unchecked when you upload. I did that on the last couple I uploaded. Nick
