Subject: How do I export?

I'd like to move stuff back and forth between DAZ|Studio and Poser (and between DS and other applications too). How do I export or save in a format other than the proprietary one?

you can't as far as I know, Daz wants you switching to their product not the other way around

Well darn, that means no export to Vue? I was thinking it might be fun to export something to Bryce, then to Poser and then back to D|S, but if you can't manipulate it in Poser, I think I'll pass for now. Thanks for letting me know, though.

Yes, the latest Mac & PC versions (0.9.4.0) of the Bryce Turbo Exporter will make .obj and .mtl files from D|Studio, which can be imported into Vue4. But once in Vue4, you can't export anything as .obj. You can import the D|Studio .obj into Bryce, then export as .obj, then bring that into Poser. Then you're stuck, unless you save the new Poser mess as another .pz3 to export back into D|Studio. You cannot open or import .obj files back into D|Studio. D|Studio only recognizes Poser native formats such as .cr2, .pz2, .pz3, etc., and it's own proprietary format, .daz. Confused yet? Oh, BTW, you can easily import the D|Studio .obj into Maya (did it while beta-testing the plug-ins for DAZ3D), which also maps all the textures properly. Then you can export the file back out of Maya as an .obj and take it into 3DS MAX or any other program that can import and export .obj files. -scara

Ok, then I can take a figure in D|Studio and export it to Bryce. From Bryce I can send it to Poser, I can then play with the poses and lights and send it back to Bryce and from Bryce back to D|S? Guess I can also send from D|S to Maya, Maya to Poser, Poser to Maya and Maya back to D|S? Thanks for the heads up. BTW, if I do something for D|S with an expiration date, how do I make sure whatever gets exported still expires (so people don't run it off into Poser and have free use of it rather than temporary use? Thanks.

I wish it was easier to move stuff from Poser to D|S. I'd thought that the "you can use all of your poser content in D|S" meant easy imports. Oh well, interesting to see how it all develops.

Actually, you can import OBJ. When you have the Import File dialog open, click the File Type dropdown and the other option is OBJ.

Since I have a Mac, and only tested on the Mac (with OS10.3.4 only), the Mac Exporter dialog does NOT have a drop-down or pop-up from which you can make a choice. Additionally, when you invoke the Export command, you get a dialog box that allows you to SAVE AS..., with a SAVE button. I wrote that gem up some time ago, because if it is confusing to me, it will sure be confusing to a newbie! As to expiration dates of content, you will have to contact DAZ or do a search on their forums. I tend to stay far, far away from expiration content. -scara

My answer had to do with importing an obj into Studio which has been possible (on the PC at least) since the first version of DAZ Studio. Since there is now a Turbo import plug-in for Mac Bryce, I would think the latest version of Studio for Mac (0.9.4.0) would have an obj export option. There doesn't seem to be any point in the plug-in if you can't export from Studio. As far as content with an expiration date, I don't think there is really going to be a big market for that. I know I wouldn't be interested. TC

I'm havin a problem exporting as well, I just down loaded DAZ Studio of the mac (0.9.4.0) I downloaded a free poser character just to test and when i tried to import it into Bryce I got an "invalid format" error message . What am I doing wrong I thought that DAZ and Bryce are suppose to work togther? ( yes it was a obj file)

There is a thread at DAZ in the Brycetalk section which addresses this error. You may want to check it out.

The thread is called "Intermittant Loading errors in Bryce"

Apparently sometimes an obj is saved with a text string NaN or #IND instead of a number value in the normals area and that can cause the error you are getting when you import.
