Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 28 9:33 pm)
Yes.....mateo...their forums are filled with it....You know how it goes...no is ever happy all the time...ALWAYS sonmething to complain about ~eye roll~. Personally I've NEVER had a problem with Daz that hasn't been addressed within 24 hours or less. Same with here or any other site...guess I'm weird.
That thread is a prime example of why I felt there was a double standard here as far as what topics get "squashed" and what topics don't. As far as I'm concerned, the tempers are flaring in that thread a lot more than in a thread in the Den that recently got a warning. Oh ... but that's vendor bashing. It's all a part of "healthy competition." My bad. 8-(
Well personally I HATE DAZ! I hate DAZ with an utter passion!! I have spent soooo much money with them and they STILL continue to post more stuff I want!!! But for the record, RDNA is even worse! And what about this place, Rendo MP, They Too keep tempting me with their promos and trying to lure me into they wicked checkout stand! And NOW ThorneWorks Tooo!?! www.faerie-dreams.com And I hear soom CL is going to make another attack by offering P6?!?!?! Will someone PLEASE just whip me, beat me and take away my Credit Card, PLEASE!!!!!

Use XP's Prefetch feature to improve system performance by John Sheesley (see link)."If you're frequently using the same few applications over and over again, prefetching can greatly increase the apparent speed of a system.
Rather than waiting for you to click an icon to start a program, and then loading all of the associated files, libraries, and pointers necessary to run the program, XP has all the components of your programs preloaded. When you click an icon to start the program, most of the hard work is already done."
"The drawback to prefetching is that XP will prefetch a program even if you use it only once or twice. XP will retain a copy of a portion of it in the Prefetch folder. If you have enough unused or little-used items prefetching, over time your system will actually run slower than if you
never prefetched at all. This is especially evident on systems with limited resources." (i.e., Low RAM, crowded, Un-Defraged HardDrive's, etc.)
"As with most Windows XP-related things, you can change the way that Prefetch behaves by making a change in the registry. For low-memory systems, you can even completely disable the feature, which ensures that every last byte of RAM goes toward running current programs, not the ones XP guesses you'll need next."
Taken From Microsoft Website:
Windows XP monitors the files that are used when the computer starts and when you start applications. By monitoring these files, Windows XP can prefetch them. Prefetching data is the process whereby data that is
expected to be requested is read ahead into the cache. Prefetching boot files and applications decreases the time needed to start Windows XP and start applications.
I've got nothing against DAZ, except for two things, their unwillingness to support Poser 5 and their constant pushing of D/S. They don't really advertise it like any other company, but they force it more or less on you ( especially if you're a user of their content or a Bryce 5 user ). Your post really seemed like another one of those pushy DAZ post, but it clearly wasn't intended like that at all. If I offended you, sorry about that. Wasn't meant personal, just get fed up with the DAZ D/S tactics.

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(
Food for thought.....

Will someone PLEASE just whip me, beat me and take away my Credit Card, PLEASE!!!!! gets out the whip Sure thing, honey. Or should that be, "Sure thing, you weak-willed, sniveling Poser addict! On your knees and take what's coming to you!" :-) bonni (just nurturing my inner dominatrix ;-)

I haven't seen or heard anything about DAZ Studio yet to justify trying it out, but so what? I like the toonimals. So the way I figure it, DAZ is just a company. If they have something worth using, I'll use it. If not, I won't. Good work on spreading the word about prefetch, though, Veritas. People like you who take the time to find the new features of XP are the primary reason I'm considering an upgrade from Win2k Pro... Of course, if I upgrade, and XP turns out to be horrible, I might have to come looking for you. ;) Peace out and go easy!
uhm, i guess i'm missing something. what's the big deal with/against DAZ? i thought they were just one of the more popular vendors for poser material... i assumed they were somewhat of a fledgeling company that got started by creating new models for poser and have grown from there. so, why don't people like them?
I have NO problem with DAZ. I don't give a shit if people here think I'm a DAZ groupie, but the fact is they do more for Poser users than any other company so far (with the possible exception of RuntimeDNA's great support of P5). Most of the items you see in THIS marketplace and others are direct results of DAZ's great products for Poser. Think their products are overpriced? Go to TurboSquid and see what those guys are charging for a fully rigged character in 3dsMax or Maya, and then consider that they don't even come with morphs (you have to make your own). All this negativity toward DAZ is just stupid drama created by a few "player haters" who seem to want everything for Poser to be free.

This is sooooo funny! After Poser 5 was released, everybody here HATED Curious Labs and LOOOOOOVED Daz. According to the pundits and whiners who argued with everybody at the drop of a hat, Poser 5 was "garbage" and the then-unreleased Daz Studio was going to save the world and cure cancer. (Check back through the threads here to see what I mean.) Now the whole thing has flip-flopped. People kind of like Poser 5 and they seem to HATE Daz Studio. I say, just be patient Veritas777. If you wait long enough, the whole thing will flip-flop back again. And don't take ANYTHING anybody here says seriously. If there's one thing to be learned about the events of the last year and a half, none of the Poser pundits know what they're talking about. And thanks for the tip! I think it's useful and I don't have a problem with Daz Studio. (Come to think of it, I never had a problem with Poser 5 either). -jjsemp
"(Come to think of it, I never had a problem with Poser 5 either)." Yep. Same here. The original release was unstable in some areas, but even before the service releases that corrected those issues, I thought P5 was a great upgrade from P4. Having experience in 3dsMax, things like the cloth room and hair room dynamics are very useful and functional to me. I still have to get the hang of using node-based shaders, but the material room is a powerhouse. As for D|S... I didn't like it (so far). But I won't make a conclusion on it until they fully release it (out of beta), and even then it might be too soon to judge. I think it also has some GREAT potential (with tons of room for some impressive 3rd party plugins), but people are so impatient.

Interesting thread this one! Frankly....I've never had any major problems with DAZ products. Besides, I was able to get Bryce 5 for a pittance after DAZ purchased it! What's odd about my success with DAZ is that I have Poser 5! I use to have lots of problems with Poser 5.....bitched about it constantly. Then I learned how to use it....that helped a lot! The jury is still out on DS, but for a beta I'd say it's pretty darn good. I still like Vue the best though. Softriver: you'll love XP...Prefetch and all :)
A lot of people love to hate the market leader or the most successful at anything - witness the anti-Microsoft hatred, the Bill-bashers. And McDonalds haters, etc etc.
And so it is in Poserdom also: DAZ is the most successful content provider and a lot of people think that makes it OK or even correct to actively and vociferously hate them. I don't geddit... I think they do a good job, have good products, give good support.
And they attacked you, which hardly surprises me, considering their attitude problems. I agree with you, it's very sad.
But just ignore them.
And I've never had trouble with P5 - it's a lot more stable (on my VERY complex PC system) than P4 ever was.

Bigotry- "The attitude, state of mind, or behavior characteristic of a bigot; intolerance."
My thread title was "Another Tip That MIGHT Make Poser LOAD Much Faster!" Note the words "MIGHT". Note that nothing says "DAZ"

I had found BY ACCIDENT that after having loaded the new DAZ Studio beta (which had NOT been on my computer AT ALL for over three months) that after letting DS do its runtime cataloging search and then CLOSING IT, I was now getting an extremely fast loading "OS effect" with Poser Pro-Pack. As I ALSO said, I had been using Correct Reference Pro for my
Poser runtimes and this may have had an overall cumulative "OS effect."
What I said in my thread--
"My THEORY about this is that it apparently REGISTERS someplace the list of where all the Poser Library info is and that my MODERN OS's use this reference when I click on Pro-Pack."
"This effect has been repeatable during the following days- WITHOUT having to load Daz Studio first."
I was ATTACKED REPEATEDLY in my thread. There were in fact several very vicious, ranting posts against DAZ (which was not the subject of the thread) and attacks against me personally. My personal observation which I said MIGHT work for someone else was greeted with-
"This is impossible."
"this is a fairy tale, this is just one big joke"
"do you work for daz?"
"Rah, rah, rah! Daz, Daz, Daz!"
And those were only the NICER verbal assults on ME, who
these ranting hate-mongers are really venting against are DAZ (apparently-but they seem to HATE ANYONE who uses DAZ products)
Kuroyume0161 was among a few in the thread to take what I said and look it seriously---
kuroyume0161 --"This may be a result of WinXP caching certain information just for this purpose: quick reloads of applications. It's called "Prefetch" and you will find the folder in your Windows folder."
Veritas777---
"Thanks for the "Prefetch" info. I did think it was more likely the OS was doing it too, as obviously Poser had no software mechanism for it."
