Subject: Poser in Linux?

dona_ferentes ( ) posted Tue, 23 March 2004 at 3:33 AM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 8:31 PM

I have a dim memory of reading a post here from someone who said they'd got Poser running on a Linux system (unless I hallucinated it!) I'd be grateful if anyone could tell me if such a thing is actually possible, and if so, does Poser run 'properly' with no major limitations or glitches. I realised recently that Poser is the only product that's keeping me chained to Microsoft operating systems. I really can't do without Poser, but it would be nice to wave goodbye to Windows once and for all. Thanks! Morph

I think Penguinisto had some success with this... can't remember the level of success, but if it works, it's good news.

Poser's not the only thing holding me back, but i'm in much the same predicament as you morphy.

Yeah, this discussion seems to come up every other month or so. Peng has had it running in Linux, but he used a special program (not WINE) to do it. As I recall, he could only use 128mb of ram, and it didn't run very well. The furthest I've ever gotten it in WINE was to the workspace, and it crashed as soon as I tried to do anything. Best bet is with D|S. ~DM

Thanks for the replies, guys. It looks like I'm going to be stuck with windows for a while longer after all :( Personally I won't be using D|S, ever, even if it does come in a Linux version. I hate DAZ almost as much as I hate Microsoft, generally for the same reasons. Oh well. Thanks again. Morph

I can vouch for Poser on Fedora....very slow (it does work, though, thanks to win4Lin.) It works fine up until you start adding stuff to your libraries at which point, it slows down to a crawl (much worse than you'll ever see in regular windows). One day, there will be consumer software for linux, but in the meantime, OSX is about the only game in town....if I could splurge the cash, I'd be there in a minute! eric

Thanks, Eric - I generally spend several hours per day on Poser work, so I really can't afford to have it slow down to a crawl. Oh well... I guess I'll just have to be a slave of the Evil Empire for a while longer. Thanks, everyone. Morph

Win4Lin is how I got it running. the slowdown is because you can only allocate 128MB to the whole shell, which Poser has to share with the Win98 "install". Dunno why you detest DAZ so much, but I'm still lobbying to get hold of the D|S source so I can try to get a (albeit unsupported by DAZ) version of D|S built for Linux (unless Taylor beats me to it.) /P

Cool, go for it Peng! :D

D|S = DAZ|Studio. You can download it for free from DAZ' website. I did manage to get it running under Crossover Office, and very nicely. No word from DAZ on porting it yet, though. /P
