THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Modeling question

ashgondai ( ) posted Wed, 18 August 2004 at 8:55 PM · edited Wed, 26 February 2025 at 11:41 AM

Hello everyone I was wondering if there is a way to create good Bryce models without endlessly repeating primitives on the screen? For example tse60's models or rochr's models that look like they have bumb maps. Any help would be excellent.

A few guys here use a little package called 'WINGS 3D'. Some use Rhino and C4D. The big guys create their own bump maps and textures, but there is plenty to go through in the FREESTUFF area. Not sure what you mean by 'endlessly repeating primitives on the screen' Bryce can create just about anything using primitives, you just have to have the knack. I can only think of two occasions where I have had to use another app to create something I couldn't make in Bryce.

modelling with primitives is a time-consuming task that affords little place for details in my opinion. www.wings3d.com | download it. look in the tuts for it on this site, that will give you a head start.

Funny that draculaz would mention Wings 3D.I just happened to throw together a quick Space Station with that very program. Just need some texture and bump maps to give it a reasonable appearance.

Didn't you know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That's why eyedrops and rose-colored glasses are needed.

I second the motion as far as recommending Wings! If you want to build basic props, or complex models, even organic ones, Wings is hard to beat. You can build stuff that you can easily use over and over, or share with others, whatever app they may use. Bryce doesn't have that flexibility at this point(maybe someday).

By the way, I recommend Drac's Wings spaceship tutorial as a great way to learn the basic commands and operations of Wings. Even a tyro like me could follow it, and I soon found myself using it all the time. I even use it in my Bryce landscapes. Oh Yes, Drac did not pay me for, or solicit my testimonial, lol.

I myself have started using Wings3D too... my freebie smg was done with that prog. Just a question to some of the more experienced modellers: is there a way to make "solid subtractions" in Wings? Like, the negative boolean in Bryce with wich you "subtract" a solid from another?

blaufield: yep, under booleans. this is actually the best tut site on the net in terms of wings3D stuff :)

While Wings does not do true boolean operations, there are alternative workarounds. IMO true boolean ops usually give you a messed-up mesh. You might want to check out this link in the Wings forum where they discuss some of these alternatives.

Ooops! Drac's link is more direct, though the same link is included in the discussion I cited.

Actually I already have wings 3d. I was wondering if theres is a way to get strange shapes like you can in lightwave or 3ds max in Bryce?

all right, chief, you and me will go round and round. zo, modelling challenge, you pick the topic, the deadline, the duration, everything. only condition is that you model whatever using only booleans while i use wings. Or are you too chicken to prove your mastery of boolean operations? :P Drac

Oh boy! This I gotta see!

@ashgondai- could you maybe give us a picture, or link to what you have in mind? Maybe then we could try to explain how to get the look or effect that you want.

ash those can be done in blender, path extrutions and the like ,have a look there. you can always export your object back to bryce an example of how to make an tire is here: http://members.yourlink.net/gruff/wheel/ general modeling info can be found here: http://www.blender.org/modules/documentation/htmlI/ picture is still from a test animation i did 200 frames in 10 min lol

i forgot its there for windows mac unix etc. I think that the new bryce 6 could be agreat compagnion as they both do diffrent things good bryce has great material interface and landscape creation and blender has great renderer and animation options so at least make an im/export posible for .blend files and youve got a hit why reinvent the wheel better concentrate on your strengths. picture is textured with the rust pic from this forum took me 2 days to figure out how to get decent textures in blender.
