Subject: Vue 4 Pro render to disk question

Djeser ( ) posted Sat, 21 August 2004 at 11:49 PM ยท edited Fri, 10 January 2025 at 4:08 AM

I started a render to disk last evening; image is 12" x 12" (12 inches square), render 300dpi. I used custom settings, with antialiasing options fairly high quality. This morning, I looked at the screen; there's a "Writing picture" note at the bottom left, with one of the horizontal indicators next to it (like the one you get when saving a scene, etc), and it's still at the very beginning. Is this normal? I tried to hit "Esc" which will usually cancel out a render, and it kept going, and I was able to click on menu items (usually can't do that while rendering), so I closed the file; it asked if I wanted to save changes, I assume render setting changes, and I said yes. So now scene is closed, but the "Writing picture" thing and indicator are still going. Any ideas on what's going on? Can I render other images to the screen while the disk render is going on in the background? This is the first time I've tried this in Pro, so I'm kinda confused, lol! I'm afraid to try the task manager to quit, as I don't want the scene to get corrupted.

thanks in advance.

Athlon 1G
W2k Pro
1G DDRAM
GeForce FX 5200 BTW...I did check the manual first (always do before posting a question); fairly useless. No info on this that I could find.

When you are rendering to disk you get a message in the bottom left hand corner saying "Rendering to disk: 2% - Time left: 0h25' - Press Escape to stop rendering". You don't get a progress bar. The render size that you have chosen is very high. I just did one about that size and it took 258 hours to render, so your render would probably have a long way to go. You shouldn't be able to click on any menus or anything, so sounds like it may have been failing or have already failed. There is a bug in Vue Pro that will give a quick render of that size (in about 2 seconds) and will indicate a complete render but won't actually render anything. Once all this has happened you will find that Vue will continue to run at 100% until you kill it. Sounds like your scene is saved, so that is the important thing.

Ugh. Well, that's not fun, lol! I'll probably try it again this week and see how it goes. Thanks, Scott!

Hi Christie, I second Scott's post. I had the same problem with a very big render of an image which was around 40"x30". I experienced exactly the same issue. Unfortunatly I wasn't able to resolve it until I cropped the size to 30" x 23". Maybe it was a problem with the RAM availaible though I don't know why this happened since I'm having 1.25 GB RAM installed in my mac. Keeping my fingers crossed that you can figure out what's wrong. I'm wondering if it'll work ok if I render at larger size than I need (12" x 12") but at low DPI, then increase the dpi in photoshop....anyway, will try it maybe this weekend and drive Davy crazy, lol! thanks, Phil
