Subject: How to apply textures to a custom model?

Black_Star ( ) posted Mon, 23 August 2004 at 3:45 AM · edited Sat, 23 November 2024 at 11:51 AM

Hy there! My problem is simple : I canot apply any texture to a custom made model (like a weapon made in 3DS). Wich is the entire process of texturing a weapon made in 3DS or other program. I do the weapon , and I export it.What should I know before of this? I import it in Poser and I make an .obj then export it again.Again , what should I know about this? I use UVMapper to make the map.But by default it looks bad , so I switch to box , but as box it will not wrap on the model as it should be.What do I miss here? How do you do all of these? What if UVMapper gives me "The item has no UVMap , press to create one" , what kind of UVMap should I choose? All I need are just points to follow and things I should take in consideration.I have worked alot around this so I have some experince.Complete means that I need all the steps explained , but not in detail. Best regards!

All is alright, you have the understanding of mapping. As a new map, first start with Planner so you can see your model. Then if you have materials, you should select your material, one by one and map that part. Like a barrel of a gun should be mapped as a cylider, maybe the handle of the gun would be mapped as a box. Once you start or create your first map, it does not mean you have to keep that particular map, you just want to create uv's . Then you can map any part any way you want. Sharen

Also, you should do a weld of this model and then a split verticies so it doesn't look like it has rounded edges if it goes back into poser. Sharen

Also.. remember to SAVE you newly mapped obj again in order to actually USE the new mapping :o)

Aha...I think this may be my mistake ernyoka1!I wasn't know about this...I will test it and tell you after this if something hasn't gone well. And SAMS3D , my model does not have any material right now.I export them from 3DS as plain objects , altough they have different parts. It's something wrong with this? Best regards!

No, it is just easier to select something by group or material in UV mapper, unless you can identify each polygon. Sharen

Oh and also, if you have a geometries folder with your object model in there, after you save it your model in UV mapper, make sure you delete the .rsr that is located in the geometries folder, so your new model's uv's are recongnized. Sharen
