Subject: Gallery images that didn't get expected hits?

I enjoy the posts where everybody links some of their favorite images because there's never enough time to really scour the galleries for what's good. I'm constantly amazed at how many images are stored here. There must be 200-300 new gallery images added per day. I thought that a different take would be to link to an image you created that you expected to get more views, but, for whatever unknown reasons, never got them. My pick is an ogre battling a knight image I did that I probalby put more time into than any other image I did. There were so many false starts and dead ends on this image that it never quite matched what I had in my head. The ogre's ax swing doesn't have the visual power that I imagined. Still, I overall like how it came out. With the amount of time that's passed, there's things I'd want to do postwork on. I remain surprised that it's got the least amount of views of anything in my gallery.

I don't think 180 views is a small number, considered the big amount of posts made daily. A suggestion maybe put the underrated image as one of your 3 displayed on the frontpage of your homepage, so whenever someone got there, they'd see the thumbnail and possibly click on it. Other than that... imagine if every poster would post a thread in the forum pointing at whatever image they feel the need to boost... It would became a big mess and probably very few would keep on using the forum. In any case you can always repost your image... Btw, i saw part of your gallery... pretty nice works there!

Although it's full of women, this image only had 41 hits until I posted it here. If you study the thumbnail, you can probably see why it wasn't popular. :)

He he, anyway it's even worse when you get plenty of hits and almost no comments or rankings... *grin*

I like these sorts of threads too. This one has had way fewer hits than most of the rest of my gallery yet remains one of my personal favourites. It made me smile a lot when I made it and still makes me grin when I revisit it.

I thought this one might get more comments (although I'm not bigheaded enough to think it "deserved" them) but so often the works we're most pleased with don't seem to strike the same chord with other people. I should have put it in under Pin-Ups instead of Gothic ;)

The categories are sometimes tricky. And the thumbnail makes a big difference. One very suggestive, but non-nudity, picture I did, I used a monochrome thumbnail. It's as if people can't interpret black-and-white images any more.

This is one I've always wished more people had seen, mostly because it's filled with personal imagery, and I really liked how it turned out onscreen. It did get a fair amount of comments, mostly favorable.

I love these threads too. I rarely browse the galleries, so I love when people kinda present their favourite images to me. This one has got a fairly high hit/comment ratio, but still not as many hits as I would have though. But of course there's no naked women in it. Actually there are no women in it at all. Still I personally thinnk it's my best picture so far. Everything worked the way I wanted it :o) Now I'll go look at the other pics in this thread :o)

I'm not going to post a link here because, well, none of my stuff gets very many hits at all. I am finally approaching 100 on a couple and 120 on another one of my images. My Artist's page seems to suffer the most. I've got 95 hits on it and I think half of them are my husband, mom and dad. I do hate to have 99-110 views and absolutely no comments or suggestions or even a "you posted to the wrong gallery" comment. I'm off to look at all the wonderful images that are linked here. Just beware as I like to leave comments! Kristta

I've always been rather fond of this one, if only because of all the banging-my-head-against-the-wall sessions it took to get the shadows right. Ah well, I learned a bit about Poser's lighting limitations from that. Not the least viewed in my gallery, and it did collect a few nice comments, but I had hoped it would be more popular.

Besides, it was funny. =)

More pics to come soon (as soon as I can get the %@#& thing to render)...

This didn't even make 100 viewings yet. (Hit/comment ratio was good though.) Probably to do with the thumbnail. I've definitely noted that having a face in the thumbnail (or perhaps just an eye or a mouth) increases hits.

I always like my last image best. Deleted over 80 of my older works. This one is my favourite on the moment, got lots of comments, under 250 views though and buried already. So working on a new one :-))

Kristta: In my opinion you (and everyone) need to make maximum use of your allotted thumbnail size (200x200 limit I believe). I know when I go thru the galleries I scan rather quickly thru the thumbnails stopping when something catches my eye (like an image that doesnt have a bare breast :-D ). I almost never click on things without thumbnails and dont think I would notice much in smaller thumbnails. I may be missing lots of good stuff, but I dont have all day and I dont have broadband so I dont get to see everything. As for my personal favorites.they are all I post. If you want to see any of mine click on my name and visit my gallery. I dont have very many images (only 10 including 2 photographs).

I'm happy if I get more than 200 hits, but they are all masterpieces! :O)

As several people have mentioned thumbnails, there's a VERY mini-tut on my site in the "Tips" section called "Giving Good Thumb" about making thumbnails for your artwork. It's nothing more than common sense really, but some might find it interesting, or even helpful.

It appears that spamming the forum does work. :) The hits on my image linked above have more than doubled in just a few hours, and the comments have tripled. :D Thanks to everyone who looked, and especially to those who took the trouble to leave a comment!

almeidap ( ) posted Tue, 24 August 2004 at 7:07 PM

I know the feeling, I worked my butt off on a few images and then I was quite surprised when my 5 minute renders garner so much more hits and comments. C'est la vie!

You know, I've always been kinda sad that this image never got many comments/hits. It was my first hand painted hair (with a mouse - I now have a Wacom but I still haven't actually painted hair with it, go figure). I also worked pretty hard on the background in Photoshop, of which I was possibly inordinately proud. :) Jack

I was disappointed that my latest attempt did not get very many comments - can't complain too much though because I rarely find the time to comment much too :) Just surprised that hardly anyone except other people who took part in this had anything to say - granted it's not deep, meaningful art but it is something that 3D is widely used for.

As long as we're at it..... :) I never could figure out why everyone didn't love this one as much as I do! After all, I worked for DAYS to get the textures and lights "just so"..... all for 315 hits, 3 comments and just two rankings.... :/ I thought I got ol' Posette looking pretty damn fine!

I guess that my picture "stalking" was the one that I really liked and surprised me by a lack of hits.

This is one I just paosted, but feel that its already dead. It didnt get as many comments as I thought or hoped. could have alot to do with the thumb.

gagnonrich ( ) posted Tue, 24 August 2004 at 10:28 PM

It appears that spamming the forum does work. :) I suppose everything is a matter of perspective. To me, it's more like getting a virtual museum tour by a variety of artists. What can I say, I like these tours! :) The bulk of this community is made up of people artistically using Poser and there's nothing sadder than images not getting the attention they deserve. It's fun to go through images that people worked hard on. It's nice to give everybody an incentive to go through their works and pull out an image that maybe should have gotten more attention. I'm always amazed at how prolific many artists are. After nearly a year, I've only been able to squeak out 8 images. Usually, I can only devote a weekend to an image and it tends to have to be finished up in the wee hours of Sunday evening with warts and all. I agree with the comments. Anti-aliasing should have been used. I wasn't completely happy with the Freak's pose at the time and still am not. The most frustrating aspect of the image was trying to get the ax in the right position and getting the hands around it. Every time I moved things around, the hands, and ax had to be laboriously repositioned. Now it's time to look at some more pix.

Shrug. It's the taking part that counts, eh?

Hmm, well I've always thought this one was nice, but it didn't seem very popular.

Not too sure why this one didn't work. May be it has to do with the day I posted it. You should post on thursday around 1:00pm today there was 2350 people on the server.Oh well.........
