I've gotten trees to export as obj's but Vue won't open them. I've also exported as a 3ds, and vue will open them, but there's no material groups. I'll admit I haven't really experimented all that much, an afternoon or two... but to answer your question, yes, carrara will allow you to export trees....
Yes, you can export trees from CS3. And yes, you can import them into Bryce5.

Thanks. Good to know. I was mainly looking at Carrara as treegenerator. .obj and 3ds would be the main formats I need for import to Cinema4D. The materialgroups seems to be a problem thou. They need to turn up as polygon selections (SelectionTags) in Cinema, so I can re-apply the material again. In the Carrara manual it says procedural materials (for the tree) can be exported as bitmap textures. That would imply some sort of selection are made during export. If anyone knows more of this Id be very happy! Thanks again. Cheers Lennart
I actually haven't tried it yet with the trees. With other things though, it can take quite a while to export the textures (it has to render them...) but it's worth the wait. Not to dicourage anyone from Carrara, but if you're only looking for a tree generator, why not try Tree Pro? http://www.onyxtree.com/suite.html
I took a look at Tree Pro and it seems very good. A little pricey with the libraries. I do actually have DPIT which is a tree generator plugin for Cinema. It is very competent for a lot of things but lacks a good library. This is why Im trying out Carrara since it has enough presets that can be modified easely plus I "knowit from Bryce. I got in contact with a companion that I asked to export a palm out of Carrara as obj and 3ds. He had never done it before so he sort of used the default settings for export. He sent it to me and both formats open fine in Cinema, obj being much faster. The only thing is that single sided polygons (leafs)have reversed normals, not a big problem thou. Both formats had the correct selection tags exported as well Also the textures wasnt correct as it looks, but that could just very well be his inexperience. So in short it seems to work pretty well! Ive used the TreeLab in Bryce but there you cant export it, as far as I know. Im now sitting checking out the Carrara3 Demo and it seems as it is possible to export a tree to .obj etc. Has anyone tried that? Cheers Lennart
