Subject: OT - Doh! question about networking 2 pcs.

pogmahone ( ) posted Wed, 25 August 2004 at 11:24 AM · edited Thu, 07 November 2024 at 10:11 PM

How does one go about networking two pcs? I have a new pc that's winXP, and an older pc that's win98SE. Is it possible to network pcs with different OSs?

afaik, windows networking only works with 2 comps both having xp. but i might be wrong. try this link and see if you get anything out of it

They are networkable. As long as the file system on the xp machine is FAT32, the win98 system will be able to read the xp's files.

It's doable. How much detail do you need?? How many PC's total? Are you going to use a router or a hub? Are you planning on splitting some sort of internet access? Is either/both going to be accessable via the interent? (In which case, do you have a firewall installed?) For just networking two PC's, you will need a network card installed in each machine and a network (Cat5) cable connecting them. For just a local network, you want to set their IP addresses to 192.168.0.xxx. (Make sure they are different.) And assign both to the same domain. (Whatever you want to name it.) Let me know, I can talk you through it. It's fairly easy with WinXP involved.

Too late, my brain's exploded!! Think I'd be safer bringing it in someplace, to someone who knows what he's doing.....

Hmm I have one comp on my network that has 98. WOrks fine with the other 4. It's all wireless through a Dlink router. It's sharing resources with the other computers just fine.. It's actually a part of my little render farm as well. If you wanted to chain the pc's together using crossover cable I can see where you'd run into trouble.. But using a router it's not only doable it's extremely simple.

I have four computers on a network, 3 xp's and one 98 second ed. Xp's are all NTFS file system and 98 is FAT 32 works fine. Just need to figure out why the remote computers disconnect my dsl when they are booted or shut down. Very easy to do with XP.

Hi Pog...if you want local help give NeilV an IM and I am sure he will be able to help. He has set up his own PC's into a network of 3 and one is on win98. He is based in Lusk, so not that far away from you, and a teccy by trade.

I would suggest to go with a router, you only need 1 IP address with a router, where a hub will need an IP address for every computer. The NTFS computers will read fat 32 just fine, it's the fat 32 computer that may have trouble reading the NTFS filing systems. But, I have saved file from my NTFS computers into my computer running win95 (Fat32) and the win95 computer opens the file just fine. Not sure how that works, but my guess would be that the NTFS computer is saving the file in the win 95 computer as Fat32.

I dunno..my problem is I never get to play with anything that simple..;) I think you can do it with a hub, 2 network cards, and 2 computers..I have a wireless hub at home, and I'm on the remote unit now (which comes and goes, thanks to the thick, 80-year-old walls we have here)..I have XP on the one, this one is Win 2k..there should be sites out there to help you out, you might do a search. I'll leave all the bits about file and print sharing to folks who have more expertice..;)

I think I'll just save files to cd and shift them to and fro that way, forget about a renderfarm!! BTW - when I first bought my new pc I asked on the Carrara forum about using new and old together for rendering (with Carrara Studio 2), and was told in no uncertain terms that I'd have to buy two licenses if I wanted to render on two pcs :o| That's a bit much, don't you think?

I have a network of 2 win2k, 1 win98 and two Linux Boxes. So there's a mix of file systems, but because all communication is TCP/IP this is irrelevant. All you need to do is connect the boxes together via NICs (wired or Wireless) assign each one a name and IP, enable file sharing (And printer or internet sharing if desired) and you're away. Win2k and XP make network setup a dream. Bryce has an advantage over Carrara then, because Lightning (the network render client) is free :P

If you get Broadband from Eircom The Broadband modem is also a hub with one usb and one network conection they are conected and both can use the internet I also use a hub as an uplink of the network conection to enable two win 98 pc to talk to one win 2k PC

pogmahone ( ) posted Thu, 26 August 2004 at 8:13 AM

Thanks for the tip Neil. I gave up on Eircom, I have broadband from UTVinternet now, which uses a ZyXEL Prestige 630 connection. I don't see the little thingummy that was on the Eircom one.

NeilV ( ) posted Thu, 26 August 2004 at 1:28 PM

which eircom one do you have is it the cayman 3300 or a diffrent one here is another suggestion If you pick up a netgear 4 way 10mb Ethernet hub available at Maplins(off heanry street), PC world (Livey vally or Blanchards town) or Harvey Normans(Swords) for about 20 and get two network cables use the network connection wizard in XP and set up a work group but no domain and make sure each pc has a different name allow it to auto detect settings make sure the same work group is set in 98 (right click network neighbourhood) reboot and see it they talk make sure any firewall allows document share over LAN (some times it take 2 or 3 reboots before the comps talk as windows is wacky like that) hope this helps
