Well, the great local Annual Outhouse Race was arranged here for the first time yesterday. Of course we couldn't pass that out, so we headed down from our mountain top. And what a sight... 12 outhouses lined up and ready to compete...

The rules were pretty simple... the Outhouse had to be built for the occation, had to be on wheels so that it could be raced with. Each team were 4 persons strong, and one of the 4 had to be a woman. AND one person had to sit on the "throne" during the race. There were 3 competitions. The best looking outhouse. The funniest Outhouse, then of course the main event... the speed. Each team raced around the town hall 2 times becore finish line was reached. The local Catholic church got the price for the best looking outhouse. Father Francis had designed it, and was the "throne sitter". But good look didn't help them in the speed contest. *g*

Port-o-potties.
Reminds me of the old gag book title:
"100 Yard Dash to the Toilet" by Willie Makeit. I'm old enough to have used an outhouse. Only about half the families in my neighborhood had indoor plumbing until I was about 12 years old.

This is not my "second childhood". I'm not finished with the first one yet.

But good look didn't help them in the speed contest. *g* The price for the funniest outhouse went to our own, local restaurant "Smackers". They were a really pro. team, and also won the second price in the speed contest. We have to make a side note here... Not sure if it's of any significance that the "Quality Inn" team's outhouse fell apart during the race, and had to be disqualified....

The pestigious speed price was won by Maggie Valley City team, lead of course by the Mayor. There were some rumours that they might have "fixed" the race, since after all the field was led around their own home turft; the city hall.. Hmmm.... well, I guess we'll have to wait till next year to see if they can maintain their strength in the uh... outdoor activities... *g* There was no doubt that this outhouse had what most of the others lacked... an aerodynamic design that helped them in the competition....

I see that I have messed up the pictures. The "bottom" is Smackers. The middle is the town outhouse, and Father Frances sits on his throne in the 2nd one. :) tjon, my dad came from a farming family; so I am well educated in the use of outhouses too. I'll have to tell'ya that there are some major cultural differences... Firstly; in Scandinavian outhouses there are no little "moons"... we're more lovable so a heart is cut out of the doors. lol Also; I had NO idea about the significance of the corn cobs, until my husband discretely whispered that in my ear. g

pakled.. lol I'm sure it's not more than 3 hrs or so.. so make sure you come here next year.

Britt: I can still recall the main argument that the folks who didn't want to have indoor facilities was: "You're putting a sh*tter inside your house? That's NASTY!"

This is not my "second childhood". I'm not finished with the first one yet.

And thank goodness the corn cob was replaced by the Sears/Roebuck catalog, LOL.

Brit, thats a fantastic fun event you've got there! I've used two outhouses, not counting port-a-john's. One was the neighbor's outhouse when I was a kid. I'm not sure, was real young, but I think I remember there being two seats. Maybe a his and hers?. as a side note, I also remember the kitchen having a rock poking up thru the linoleom. And the other outhouse was at a not so pleasant stay in the cold weather at a girl scout camp. And I had those one piece nighties. That really sucked. It was cold!!!

Had my fill of outhouses in Girl Scout camps, boy are they nasty to clean.... Just remembered 'Potato Days' are coming up here in September/October, then my favorite 'Oktoberfest' !!!!
