Subject: Poser 4 bug on Mac

Is this a known bug for Poser 4.03 on Mac? When it can't find a referenced file, and presents a dialog for me to find it, the first part of the filename is lost off the left side of the window. And when the filename is short, sometimes I just see "...tif" or someting. Is there something that is known to do about this?

Probably not a bug. All you need to find is the correct texture and name.

Not a bug? you mean the first part of the filename is SUPPOSED to be missing? I can find the intended file. But the BUG is the missing part of the filename in the dialog box. I attatch another example. If I didn't know the filename to be found, this dialog wouldn't be much use, would it?

um.... i can read all the texture names just fine, where are they cut off?

Where are they cut off? There down at the bottom, below the file list, where it should tell me the file to look for. You can just see the last part of the name "e.tif" There is more before that, but it is not shown in the dialog box.

Look in the window and you'll see the name "child casual texture.pict" That the file you have selected. It may be an OS version conflict. I think Poser4 was designed on OS 7 or 8.

A bit more information... It is supposed to say: Please locate ... But the first part is not visible.

MartinC ( ) posted Fri, 17 November 2000 at 3:19 AM

doozy, this is a very strange thing. On my Poser, the dialog box shows a preview picture of the currently selected texture on the left side of the box, and the filename is aligned to the leftmost of that. On your Poser, the whole preview is missing (but the filename still has the same position, that's why the first part is missing). I have no idea how this can happen, because it is not customizable in Poser, so you can't turn it on/off. It could be a problem with QuickTime (which is responsible for the preview), or any other damaged Poser and/or System resource. Try to re-install it bit by bit - first QT (4.1.2 should be the most recent), then Poser, then System... sorry for that.

Hmm... further idea: I don't know about this special task, but there are many many utilities around which de-activate system features to save time (as many as those who add system gimmicks... :-). Do you have one which disables preview pictures in "open" boxes? Just a guess, because in this case you can save yourself from re-installing.

One more time! (You can't delete/replace posts any longer, so I now have to splatter your board with single replies, ha!) There's one more test you could try. Check if the folders-popup ("textures" on your screenshots) is working: If it "pops up" normally (at the place you click) then Poser expects the box this size (meaning that the bug is likely within Poser). If it appears left or right from the place it should, then Poser doesn't know about the missing left side (more likely a system bug).

You can see the pop-up menu is in the right place. Now we're making progress. My experiments have convinced me that it works like thi:. In many graphic applications the standard file open dialogs have a "Show Previews/Hide Previews" checkbox or button. The Show/Hide state selected is remembered for the next open dialog. In fact, since this is done by Quicktime, it is remembered for the next application. And the next. Its initial Show/Hide state in a newly opened application will be the same as the last one in the previous application. So, at some time I chose "Hide Previews". Later I launched Poser, and the Hide state was still in effect. Voila! I'll let the pundits argue about whether this is a Poser bug (and Quicktime feature) or a Quicktime bug.

For those reading this far, here is what it is supposed to look like...

You're a genius! I've always had the problem of the filename being chopped off at the bottom of the dialog box. I never bothered trying to figure it out, I just silently resented it. I just opened PictureViewer, enabled the checkbox to display previews, and voila! Problem solved.
