Subject: What do I export the object as to get it in poser?

Let's say I want to make a jacket or something for a character, but don't know how to get it to poser. What do I export it as, and what programs can export it that way? I just got Poser5 and am a little new to what poser can do...

The best format for Poser is Wavefront Object format (*.obj). If your moddling program can't export obj format, there is a free utility called CROSSROADS which can convert between many common formats. Poser will also import 3DS and DFX files.

Thanks, that helped a lot!

i agree with les bently but there is a better format then obj as i have recently done the same...obj is good for untextured objects but if you need a uv map then i imported into poser with a 3ds file that brings the textures with it...exported into something like uvmapper classic / pro got the map then loaded up the obj files again into poser. another good tip to stop poser rounding the edges off on undesired facets is to 'explode' the object (if using max) and this will stop it happening. hope this helps. ps a good scaling tool for the transposition is objaction scaller, sorry but i havent got a link to the file. regards british_rob.

I think it has to b e in obj format to make it posable or conforming. But for static props those other formats are fine.

Actually, Wavefront .obj files DO support UV maps. And some common groups. However, some modelling software does not export UV maps with .objs. I'm still learning (using AC3D), but so far I'm tending towards: - Colour any groups that have to be treated differently (either for seam-splitting of for different material) in the modeller. (This creates different groups.) - Keep any parts that need to move as separate objects. - Export all objects as .obj files. - Import into UV Mapper (I've only got the freebie, not pro). - Edit->New UV Map. - Choose relevant UV-Map type and let the map be generated. - Edit->Select (NOT Select by) ->material those bits that need to be unwelded and edit->tools->split seams. - (Sometimes) re-arrange the map a bit to save space. - Save the file (under a new name, for safety's sake), with Export Normals, Export UV Coordinates, Export Materials and Export UV Mapper Regions all checked (I believe these are the defaults). Then open Poser, import the .obj and it's off to the materials room.... As a side-note, AC3D assigns default names for any materials (which are just simple colours) assigned, and, as yet, I've not found a way to change them in the program. So I just edit the final .obj file in a text-editor...(or the CR2 or the PP2, whatever..) Cheers, Diolma

Thanks again for all of the in depth info everyone, suprised how many replies I got from this one subject. P.S: I am currently using: Strata3D(CX), Poser5, DAZ Bryce, and am getting Maya6 soon. Just so you would know what my capabilities are.
