Subject: Request for option in gallery

SPZ-Desdinova ( ) posted Mon, 18 October 2004 at 3:07 PM ยท edited Sun, 29 December 2024 at 5:08 AM

I was in the gallery this morning and glanced, for a few minutes, at what was new. I quickly found that there needs to be an option added to the gallery. I formally request a 'Filter Option' for the gallery. I would like to be able filter out imagery that I do not wish to look at. Either based on software type or on the 'art type' ie: Pozer & xxxxx or Photography & xxxxx. For example I want to be able to filter out anything that has Pozer in it. I have no desire to wade through the mass of Pozer files that clog 'newly posted'. I think this would make it easier for people to browse the galleries, and it may encourage more people to browse if they can 'clip out' what they do not want to waste their time with. Thank you.

Ummm... I'm probably going to hit myself for this but is there any particular reason why you don't want to see anything with Poser in it?

Rather than cutting out what you don't like, why not use the drop down menus to just go to the galleries you do like? Pretty much the same thing, no?

This site is built on Poser, so this kind of request is unexpected here. I know it's the norm to bash Poser at some 3D sites, but we expect them to keep that sentiment to themselves. Of course, I admit that most of the Poser renders aren't masterpieces, but if you hate to look at them, then try another gallery with no Poser, e.g. fractal or photography. However, it might be easy for them to crowbar another checkbox into the database, since they already have a Poser category for freestuff.

This site maybe built on Pozer, but it also has hosts many other applications. The problem, as you already stated, is that the vast majority of Pozer created pieces are entirely skiable. As for the drop downs, I would need to check ever single gallery section, except Pozer, just to get a glimps of what is new. shamanka, to answer your question. I was a beta tester for Pozer years ago, starting before version 1. Pozer showed great promise, but now it is nothing more than a cookie cutter. The creations made with it are now little more than chaff. There are but a handful of people who can use the application well, and their work is lost in the wastes. That is truly unfortunate, because they could make this site shine even more. mateo_sancarlos, all I am asking for is a way to see all the other works, without having to wade through all of the Pozer wasteland. A simple filter option, should not be that difficult, and I think others would agree with my request. All I ask is that they Please consider it. Thank you.

You know we get enough Poser bashing over at some other sites that we don't need it here. Glad to know that I'm a cookie cutter.

Yes, It does get annoying. He is asking for an option to exclude one catagory because of his opinions. Well, unless there is more support, I don't think it is worth the webmaster's time to redesign the ENTIRE Database on the basis of one perosn's complaint. I don't think he realizes the enormity of the task he is asking for.

Argon18 ( ) posted Tue, 19 October 2004 at 10:14 AM

I'm sure that all of the applications can have "cookie cutter" images done in them as well wink Anyone can put together premade objects in 3DS, Bryce, Truespace and others. So isn't what he's really asking for is a "quality filter?" That's a lot harder to do unless you go the route they do at Epilogue and make all the images conform to personal bias on what is "acceptable quality"

Natolii ( ) posted Tue, 19 October 2004 at 10:23 AM

Precisely. Only he is attributing that to one program in a narrow-minded sort of way

mateo_sancarlos ( ) posted Tue, 19 October 2004 at 2:07 PM

Ay, dios mio! That's one thing they must never do here - turning loose a squad of "quality police" on the galleries to determine which images are good and which are bad. It would probably degenerate into some very ugly nepotism and favoritism. I hope it isn't that way at Epilogue, with a select cadre of art nazis deciding what the masses get to see.

Khai ( ) posted Tue, 19 October 2004 at 3:34 PM

okies... the way I see it, and it's something I've wished for, is to be able to set in my preferences what I'd like to see in the gallery by default. personally, I'd like to hit gallery and get all + Science Fiction by default. why? cos thats what I personally am interested in. someone else may want Bryce + all just a matter of taste and nothing to get over-react at and get annoyed over.

Argon18 ( ) posted Tue, 19 October 2004 at 3:39 PM ยท edited Tue, 19 October 2004 at 3:43 PM

Actually it is since I tried to submit a few there and they were rejected as "Not Epilogue Quality" when I asked why I was told to review the images in the galleries for examples of what was acceptable so that they conformed to a set idea Having a setting in the profiles of galleries to view isn't a bad idea, since it would save time, I think it was the reason for the exclusion that most of the posts were reacting to.

Well, Khai, when the request is put that way then there is no problem. But when coupled with insults like it was, then I think you can see where people took issue.

shamanka ( ) posted Tue, 19 October 2004 at 3:49 PM

Exactly Natolii! It was the way it was brought up and honestly I got the feeling that Poser was being mispelt on purpose. What kills me about Epilogue is that they have a bunch of art nazis and you know I don't get not epilogue quality as a reason for rejections but inconsistent lighting. huh? I guess someone can't have multiple light sources.

Well, this is not the first time the request has been made to be able to filter out certain galleries. I think it's a valid request and I would like to see it completed. It would be nice to have a checklist by software and genre, and to be able to check those galleries that you don't want to view and the database would store that gallery profile so that it would stay that way until you decided to change it.

chrislenn ( ) posted Tue, 19 October 2004 at 6:49 PM

while not agreeing with the reasons why this was wanted lol we do have the option to hide forums we don't wish to see listed maybe similar could be done for the galleries? possibly not but worth asking :o)

Don't hang around here much any more. I find the whole art mall atmosphere depressing. I agree with SPZ-Desdinova. I don't look at the new section in the gallery at all, for the same reasons. I check out the individual sections that I like and avoid most pozer plug and plays. I do check out my favorite poser artists though. Although I feel I may be missing out on any new up and coming artists this way, it's like clone land out there man.

Isn't that what thumbnails were created for? to catch a glimpse and see if you want more of the action? and if not go on your merry way to others? O.o :D

manleystanley ( ) posted Thu, 21 October 2004 at 6:10 AM

Poser thumbnails are like watching eggs role by on a convair. Actually what I would like to see is a best new artists catigory; chosen by mods not friends. Right now it's like digging through glass to find a dimond, in the New section.

Natolii ( ) posted Thu, 21 October 2004 at 7:02 AM

Well, instead of dissing the artwork, how about asking for it in a courteous fashion. Many people here also design the plug and play pieces you are so down about, so your little barbs is a slap in their faces as well.

rowan_crisp ( ) posted Thu, 21 October 2004 at 9:42 AM

manley, How would you suggest that the moderators choose? Art is highly arbitrary, and this is not a vacuum - there are personal issues, there are histories. Technical skill? That's great, but I've seen technically-skilled artists who made no impact, and less-skilled artists who managed to make me agog at the concepts they were able to use to convey something. Emotional impact? Not everyone responds to things the same way. I'm less likely to resonate to photography than I am to, say, a small hand-painted or digitally crafted image that reflects something inside the artist. (That being said, bring on the baby pictures. We loves them. :D) See the problem? RC

shamanka ( ) posted Thu, 21 October 2004 at 1:08 PM

So very true and I see it as a slap too since I'm working on a character right now that I hope to put in the marketplace. Art is subjective but we artists who use Poser are constantly getting crap for it and I for one am sick of it.

manleystanley ( ) posted Thu, 21 October 2004 at 6:44 PM

hmmmm, Thought every one here knew my opinion of poser. I apalagize to those artists that spend days/weeks creating an origenal charecter or item for poser. I have done several of my own models, and have tried to do a figure, so I know how difficult this is. Sence I'm sure I would insult some one if I say any more, and the fact that aparently I have hijacked SPZ's thread; soory SPZ, you know how I get. I'm done.

Argon18 ( ) posted Thu, 21 October 2004 at 7:32 PM

Well stereotypes are hardly the answer since why blame the tool for how an artist uses it? Everyone has to start somewhere and if they use it long enough eventually they advance beyond the basics.

Just to return to the issue a moment, I'd like to second the proposal to be able to filter sections in the gallery (though Poser is my main interest here, and so I wouldn't be filtering that out). I've thought for a long time that this would be a good idea.
