Subject: Is the Mil BigCat worth getting?

I've heard a lot of griping, but is the Mil BigCat worth getting? I saw the ads and wasn't too impressed. Is the mane in the updated version?

the mane is in there... there is work being done on it...I would wait...but then again, it is surely less expensive right now, and perhaps it will be fixed to everyone's satisfaction by the way, I just got a refund on my purchase...I'm not willing to wait for a fix when a product shouldn't be released like it was. It was very cartonny...the morphs are not very good...the paws do not look realistic..the toes do not move independent...textures are ok..but not to the usual level we see at DAZ. There are just numerous issues. In certain applications it may be ok...but not in closeups and not all cats look quite like their real counterparts..plus the mrphs are limited. look at a few of these images and decide for yourself

It looks pretty bad to me. The face is distorted in an odd way. What happened to Daz? Even their Main page picture looks bad with the zebra attack. Its not composited well so the animals stick out funny from the backround. Some motion blur on the leadings cats paws would help a lot.

No.

I am with dlk30341. You don't see the gallaries 'flooded' with big cat renders. That oughta tell you something.

I have my self been very critical of these cats, however, I did buy them and played with them for a while and with some tweeking (playing w/dials), Daz`s fixes and when someone makes a real good "real photo texture" I think it`s worth the price. one thing that convinced me was the pose set that just came out the other day they looked pretty good. I did some close up renders with my tweeks at the dials and I did my own eye textures : ) I have not played with the others yet, some of them seam to look like stuffed toys. hope this helps, Kim

movida ( ) posted Wed, 20 October 2004 at 7:55 PM

I just bought him and played with him for about an hour. It does depend on what you want to use it for. For "portrait" type renders (we can dream can't we) - no. I'm going to rip his head off and take it into ZBrush and see what happens. I haven't even loaded the male lion yet because I'm afraid :) I think some photo real textures would help but who's going to do them?

Someone will make a texture, I may try just for fun if I get a hold of some good pictures : )

I'm saving up for Lyne's cats. I can get them for a little bit more and I will have more attractive renders. :) That's worth the money, and after the endless hassle of this month (broken vouchers, no tech support, the copyright infringements, the big cat debacle, etc) I think I might take my toys and go third-party. Daz was great, but I'm a wee bit disgusted at this time...

Wellll..... I like the big cats. Hold on! Don't shoot me! I like them because they are an improvement over the old P4 lion I've been stuck with, or the couple of freebies I've found. There is room for improvement. Ont he other hand, I got them fairly cheap with the PC discounts, etc. I'm getting Lynn's Cats too. And her Wild Boar set. They aren't like the Daz set, and may work well with them in certain kinds of poses. Side note on the Daz Promo pics: I liked them. They were a lot better than some of the ones that Daz does, and they did how the cats as they were. I wish I could do action pics like that, but I'm more a portrait person.... sigh..

"Here is the white tiger." OMG, I just hope Siegfried & Roy won't see this .... ;-) I think some real phototextures would help a lot.

Jeez, I had hoped that the problem was more that DAZ (foolishly) chose not to demonstrate a fur shader on the bodies --which would require acknowledging the existence of programs that use those kinds of shaders, like, say, P5-- ...but looking at the previews, I had a nagging feeling the BigCat was designed by the same artist who did the original Zygote lion, and not the artist(s) who did the new horse. Even with all the accessories, morphs and maps it looks like a rushed product.

Dave-So ( ) posted Thu, 21 October 2004 at 8:28 PM

i was being diplomatic on my first post. Like I said, I got my money back. most disappointing model I've ever purchased from DAZ. And even the renders that people say they think look good...I honestly do not see anything good about them...sorry. take a look at kim258 lion..its pitiful...sorry , but it is...and I'm not talking about the Firefly smoothing problem with the whiskers either...the lion itself is terrible. if you look at the long DAZ forum thread, I was showing a couple of images that were not too bad, but as I tried more stuff, the problems became readily apparant. BUT, having said that, if it gets fixed and looks decent, realistic, and better than VIP cats, I may buy it again, but for now, its off my hard drive.

Simon Combes. Daz modeler should look at this artists paintings to see what a real big cat looks like... This big cat is a joke. I like Dazs products in general, but these beasts are anedoctal to say the least.

Becco_UK ( ) posted Fri, 22 October 2004 at 3:53 AM

To me the 'big cat' looks more like a stuffed toy. It may look better if Poser 5's displacement channel was used?

i tried dis[placement on the fur...there are not many groups or whatever..it is listed as skin..so the entire body and head takes on that displacemnt...it just didn't look very good. if you look at the beginning of this thread..and scroll down, you will see a couple of my images, that don't look too bad....but as things progress, you realize the weaknesses of this model...but like i said, it will be good for some applications, but overall leaves you lacking.

The lion looks like the lion out of Jumanji...very fake.

duanemoody ( ) posted Sun, 24 October 2004 at 12:44 PM

Point of reference: the CGI artists on "Jumanji" were DIRECTED to make the animals look less than perfect to underscore their magical origin. Said artists were clear on this point when interviewed because they didn't want the results to appear to indicate the limitations of their skills (in retrospect, the producers should have come up with a more obvious-to-the-audience solution).
