THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: More real life news...

draculaz ( ) posted Tue, 26 October 2004 at 11:28 AM · edited Wed, 05 February 2025 at 2:40 PM

Apparently the job's all ready for me back in Bucharest. I wanna pull a Tom Ridge and go, "I can't tell you where, I can't tell you how, I can't tell you who..." But anyway, it's done. In a week I'll be back in Bucharest, on a gov't salary (yay for $230 a month). Internet access will be patchy. Rendering time will most likely be zero. So two things: 1. I gotta get a move on with the CGChat thing, finish it in 4-5 days flat. I think I can do it. 2. I gotta pack like a madman. Drac

yeah, ambience. i really don't think it would be a problem with cinema. plus you could always postwork them. in my case, postwork is going to be hell :(

sackrat ( ) posted Tue, 26 October 2004 at 12:22 PM

You studied for 5 years so you could make $230 a month ?!? You could work in a carwash here in Winchester and make twice that ! Geez,.....no wonder the world is so messed up,.....you guys(diplomats) should make the big money. Well, good luck to you anyway.

well, it's romania, for one. i mean for 250 bucks you can live decently. if you had 1000 a month you'd live royally. a beer is 75c-$1.20. A bottle of good wine is $3. a pack of smokes is around 75c as well. food is relatively cheap.

a normal salary in romania is that. mind you, i'm just starting out here, it's my first job. an ambassador gets paid around 5000 bucks a month or so at the height of his career. plus, if i end up outside the country, they pay you extra every day you're out.

once we're in the EU and so on, the pay will rise with the living standards. that's not a problem. as for leaving the country, don't worry, ww3 isn't planned for another 10 years or so :D

Rochr ( ) posted Tue, 26 October 2004 at 1:09 PM

You know, if i would still live in Hungary, we would practically be neighbours. :) They dont have any good payments either, but its become better, and i think Romania will get a boost once its in as well.

Well all I can say is good luck with your move, hope you are still able to do some art work and frequent the Bryce Forum, and I hope that your career will take you as far as you want it to. Would be nice to know that by this time next year you would be making that $5000 per month. Probably won't, but you will eventually get there. 8) Oh... and yes, you NEED to get that image for the CG challenge done. You have done too nice of a job so far to just let it go. Best of luck to you and all your future endeavors Mihnea. 8) Wade

You have such an outstanding start to your contest entry Drac, you gotta finish it! Best of luck, and may neccesity be the mother of your invention.

Aw man :o( so sad to hear you leave. Iam only new to Renderosity, but i've seen many great works of you and its a shame to see you leave. I hope you will be happy with your job, make new friends, etc. i'd say 250bucks isnt very bad. I've been there on holiday onces, everyone is nice to ya, great culture and beautiful scenery. I'am sure you'll enjoy yourself. Good Luck CZ

Erlik ( ) posted Tue, 26 October 2004 at 4:56 PM

Hey, I hope you'll drop in at least occasionaly. $230 is not bad if a pack of cigarettes (I hope not the cheapest ones) is 75c. Here an average sallary is about $600 and a pack of good cigarettes (Marlboro, Winston, Lucky Strike) is $3. BTW, Rochr, put the maps in the luminance channel and enable glow. Heh. I can tell you something. Isn't it ironic? :-)

Also you could load a filter or layer control into the luminance channel as well to play with the texture. You can pull off some very cool tweaks with those.

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

I bet the Irish start WW3. It'll go something like this: Patty O'Brian on the phone to Jacques Chiroc: "Yeah, me and the boys are down here and the pub, and we just want to let ya know, we're wagin' war on france." "Oh...well...what's your troop strength?" "Yeah, we got me, Timmy over there, and the whole dart team. That makes about 8. We think we can take ya." "I think it's important that I tell you that france has a troop strength of over 100,000 soldiers." "Yeah, I'll call you back." the next day: "Hey, Chiroc, i want you to know, the war's still on. We've managed to acquire some infantry equipment." "What kind of equipment, Patty?" "Oh, yeah, let's see, we got two tractors, a bull dozer, and a couple of jeeps." "Well, Patty, I think it's important that you know that France has over 400 tanks, 600 armored personnel carriers, and about 200 artillery units. We've also increased our troop strength to 150,000 since we last spoke." "Aye...i'll call ya back." "Hey, Chiroc, the war's still on. We've gone airborne." "What kind of air forces do you have?" "Well, we got ourselves an ultralight we modified with a few shotguns, and we think we can still take ya." "I think you should know that France has a fully equipped air force, we've increased our troops to 200,000, and we have a laser-guided surface to air missile system surrounding the country." "What's that you said about the lasers?" "Laser guided surface to air missiles?" "Aye, I'll call you back." The next day: "Jacques, me and the boys have been talkin...and even though we increased our troops to 16 by adding the dart team from the pub down the street, we're callin the war off." "Well, patty, i'm not surprised, but just out of curiosity, can I ask why?" "Well, Jacques Chiroc, me and the boys have been thinkin it over, and there's just no way in hell we can feed 200,000 freakin french Prisoners!"

Doublecrash ( ) posted Tue, 26 October 2004 at 6:15 PM

RodsArt ( ) posted Tue, 26 October 2004 at 8:06 PM

Think long and hard about every posting abroad, and do a search on the net for some mysterious illness with hard-to-define symptoms that can't be positively tested for and lasts only three or four months then clears up leaving no lasting damage whatsoever, that you can trot out in an emergency. In ten years's time when they're saying "Quick, pack a bag, the Ambassador to Saudi's just been blown up and we need someone there in a hurry to take his place" you'll remember these words, and be glad you lissened to Aunty Pog ;^) PMH (who lives in a country where it's not unknown to burn down embassies, blow up ambassadors etc. etc.)

draculaz ( ) posted Wed, 27 October 2004 at 1:49 AM

some of the friends we have here in seoul were telling us about that actually, they had a couple of postings in the middle east and africa. in africa they needed to drink tonic water and take tablets of the thing in it (chinine is it spelled?) so they wouldn't get that specific disease that's linked to the mosquitoes. so yeah, i'll be careful, Poggie, thanks :) m

pogmahone ( ) posted Wed, 27 October 2004 at 2:25 AM

quinine, for malaria. ramble ramble ramble - in the seventies I worked in London in an insurance office, with a very yellow-skinned guy who was often out sick. turned out he'd been on the Burma railway during the war, and got malaria. he had frequent recurrances(sp?) of it. even further OT, malaria is one of the reasons that sickle cell anaemia is so prevalent in Africans from a belt across the middle of Africa, and their descendants in America. I THINK that what happens is that sickle cell anaemia causes thickening of the outer surface of the platelets in the blood, so the malaria bug can't penetrate. So people with sickle cell anaemia had a better chance of survival in those areas where malaria was prevalent. I don't know anything that's actually useful in day-to-day life, but have a large store of such useless knowledge :^( snore........

draculaz ( ) posted Wed, 27 October 2004 at 2:27 AM

that was quite interesting actually :)

TheBryster ( ) posted Wed, 27 October 2004 at 2:35 AM

Thanks, Pog! Have you thought about starting your own medical website? I could give you a list of unusual diseases to start with, mainly what's wrong with me......;-)

Wow, I hope you mean no rendering temporarily until you get settled in. Where I live in the US Cigs are $3.60 (2.8). Crap wine is $6 a bottle. A decent Romanian wine if you could get it would start around $18(14). Have you thought about using your Diplomatic Credentials to ship cigs and wine to the US to sell? You'd make a killing!
