A small update on the progress. The base of the main city model, and a test with details. Not too happy with the bottom image, so ill probably skip some of the pipes, and add more cubes instead.

Getting along nicely, nice how you can see that the parts continue inside the outer hull! Keep em commin' CZ

LunarTick ( ) posted Thu, 28 October 2004 at 1:15 PM

Nice work Rochr, good luck to all of you that enter that challenge. I still don't agree with their ruling on it though that anyone that wants enters it must start from scratch, not everyone can do modelling.

Coltzero ( ) posted Thu, 28 October 2004 at 1:18 PM

I humbly agree on that! they should have let people use downloaded meshes, as i cant create a tree myself! i'd realy need those premade things from bryce (as a beginning 3d-er(if ya wanna call it that way)) But rules are rules. I've also heard that you can't use models that have been made long before, is that true? CZ

Rochr ( ) posted Thu, 28 October 2004 at 2:17 PM

Thanx all. Well, based on some of the stuff ive seen there, i wont win anything... :) CGtalk have always been the forum where the industry people hang out, i guess thats why they have rules like that. I can understand about not allowing pre-made stuff, even though a lot of people arent modelers, but not allowing Bryce/Vue is crazy. And as Coltzero just pointed out, everything must be done after the challenge begins. But who will check...?

Coltzero ( ) posted Thu, 28 October 2004 at 2:21 PM

yup, my suggestion: if you have a nice model, use it! maybe make some slight changes. But be sure its bot used in any of your projects before, otherwise you might run into some trouble ^^ And rochr, about you not winning; I dunno, there are some very very great artists indeed, but i will atleast be supporting you plays as a cheerleader: We got an R, we got an O, we got a C, we got an H, we got an R, GOOOOO Rochr! ;o) CZ

Rayraz ( ) posted Thu, 28 October 2004 at 3:35 PM

woohoo! now this is cool! finally them bryce haters will be given a run for their money with the best brycer on the planet showing them we can do more then just metal spheres over water, and also if they force us to do so outside of bryce!

An update on the last image. Basically, ive opened up all the gaps, deleted some cylinders/pipes, and replaced them with more cubes. At least i got the rendertime down with a couple of hours. Why do i have the feeling that ill be bored to death by cubes after this...

Doublecrash ( ) posted Thu, 28 October 2004 at 6:55 PM

You're definitely right about dropping the low part: with cubes is way better and much more city-looking. Now, if I just know how you make all those panels, LOL. :) Jokes aside, if you're able to convey the sense of scale I'm imagining for the city, this will be fantastic. S.

Mrdodobird ( ) posted Thu, 28 October 2004 at 7:40 PM

Yeaho! That looks totally awesome! I love these updates. The detail is really cool. Those little pipes and boxes... nice.

Bowing to your superior modeling expertise. O great rochr who doth lower mine self-esteem by rendering ever so intricate complexity in green...(ish white) Im done rhyming now. Laxtopia, whenever I get around to changing my name.

I agree with "squit" boy ... err.. drac :D - very cool work, rochr.

Is all that detail on the large surfaces polygons or displacement maps? From your description of cylinders and cubes, it sounds like its all polygons.

Rochr ( ) posted Thu, 28 October 2004 at 11:38 PM

Glad you like it. :) Those are polygons alright. Unfortunatly i dont have R9 (yet). Displacement maps would definitely save me some rendertime on this one, especially since i need about 20 of these in the scene. :)

On a more serious note: While reading the GCTalk forum i came across a message that someone was using a plugin that randomly generates spacecraft like surface structures. Unfair advantage? Are random or parametric terrain and foliage/plant generation software (Bryce/Vue/Terragen) allowed? Come on, i could only wish that Bryce could do that.

I think that if they don't allow bryce/vue/terragen for their "automatic" creation of "prefabricated" models , they most certainly have to disallow automatic plug-ins like this random spacecraft surface texture generator also, in opinion.

Give it time, give it time. If this is going to show it ugly head again close to the 17th of january then there will be a riot i guess. That is then moment to complain about the unfair advantages that some of us have, that is the time to complain about the use of plug-ins while others did their best to avoid the use of those features from their low-end and above all cheap software.

not bad. I dont understand why you can't use those pre-made materials, nor old models. Its going out of line :o| Lets all fire a complain mail to the staff of CG, at the end of the contest, to show them how many use bryce, and how many create their own stuff in it! CZ
