Subject: How much is enough! A Poll.

Question: How much are Poser operations affected by the amount of memory in our computers? Sure, we have all heard that more is better, but before I spend money on adding more memory, I want to know how much is enough. So, I am running a poll. Its EASY to participate and the results will be posted here so we can all benefit. To join in, just answer these two questions:

  1. How much memory do you have on your computer? (Enter an A-F)

A) 256MB or less
B) 512MB
C) 1GB
D) 2GB
E) More than 2GB
F) Other: specify amount

  1. Then select one of the two choice below:

YES, I am satisfied that the amount of memory I have is enough. Poser appears to operate satisfactorily.

NO, The memory in my computer does not appear adequate. Poser does not seem to operate as fast or as well as I think it should.

This wont take much of your time to complete. All you have to enter in your reply is something like:
A NO or E YES.

Please consider participating because the larger the sample size, the better the results will be for all of us. Ill tally the data and report the outcome here.

(Yes, I know this is a subjective study and that there are other factors involved like processor speed, hard drive seek rate, OS, etc; however, in this brief poll I am only looking for a connection between the amount of memory people in their machines have and their overall satisfaction with Posers performance.)

Thank you in advance for taking part in the poll.

I have a pentium 4 with 1 gig of RAM and Poser works just fine -- though I have been known to screw it up. Also got a ton of other stuff on there too, mostly graphics programs. Probably oughta get rid of some of it but I'm a packrat, never know what I "might need some day".

E Yes Since Poser (or any other process) won't use more than 2GB, it doesn't matter. Anything beyond that is SwapFile or, in the case of Adobe, disk-cache.

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg off.

2: yes, most of the time it is enough, but I never get into doing those really complicated renders (with 5 v3's and 14 M3s, and a herd of Millennium Horses ) that some of the people in here do.

Right now it is C)1 GByte of memory. Yes, I am satisfied, Poser works great now. Before I had B) 512 Mbyte and Poser ran like crap on my computer, lots of crashes and lock-up. The extra memory made a world of difference.

PapaBlueMarlin ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 9:04 PM

F- 480MB No - could use more RAM, but right now I'm still waiting for my apps to come through so I have no dinero to get it.

ynsaen ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 9:15 PM

not trying to hijack the thread, but would it be possible to add in Virtual memory settings, as well?

dbowers22 ( ) posted Mon, 01 November 2004 at 9:22 PM

I went back to letting Windows (XP Pro) decide on how much Virtual memory it needs, i.e the System managed size radio button is clicked, and that also seems to make Poser run better.

d. Poser is the worst-written OS X app I have. It would be dog-slow and as unstable as a pet coon, whether I have 2GB or 2,000 GB. It has to be rewritten from the ground up, by people who don't have problems dealing with Apple. By slow, I mean it renders very fast, but trying to change the dials or select groups can become as slow as molasses.

D~I have 2 GIG's of RAM and a 600 GIG hard-drive with an additional 250 GIG external drive. Whew.. is it enough.. probably not later on, for now, it runs like a breeze! ( oh, I had this computer built with poser in mind)

B Absolutely (P5 on Win2kPro)

elizabyte ( ) posted Tue, 02 November 2004 at 12:00 AM

E: 640 Mb Yes. I'd also like to note that some aspects of rendering are actually more CPU dependent than memory dependent, so that's a factor in rendering speed sometimes more than available memory. And yes, I'd like more memory. It's a good thing to have a lot of that to play with. ;-) bonni

However with more than 2 Millenium 3 characters with lots of clothes, hair and complex set it is necessary to composite pics in a 2D program.
