Subject: Poser 5 & Bryce 5... A bit of help, please?

All I want to do is use a Poser 5 figure in one of my Bryce scenes. I read tutorials and searched all over Google; but I continue to encounter problems. Can anyone help? Here's what happens: 1. I export the Poser 5 figure as a wavefront object, and import it into Bryce Studio. (I have the Turbo Export for Bryce Studio, btw). 2. (She) shows up as a steel-grey figure, and with no hair! (The hair was created in Poser 5 using a Skullcap and 6 different Hair Groups). Please, some Guidance needed; (Questions): 1. What do I need to do? I read something about creating texture maps; do I do this from scratch, in Bryce? (Please say no). 2. Can I save the Poser 5 textures of my character and use them in Bryce 5? If so, I need step by step concerning saving the textures of my character, and getting those into Bryce to use as materials. 3. And what about the hair?? It took me for-freakin'-EVER to create her hair, and I certainly want to use it. Why doesn't it load along with her, and what do I do about it? If you can help me, please let me know if I need to supply any more details. I've spent many hours trying to solve this problem.

You're using dynamic hair? That's your problem with the hair then. Bryce does not support P5 dynamic hair exports, and neither does D|S as far as I know. It simply won't export, and if you do get it to export, it won't import properly. You'll only get the guide hairs if anything. There are plugins for other apps like Vue, C4D, 3dsMax that can support P5's dynamic hair, but that's about it. Message edited on: 10/29/2004 23:58

Grouper can be used to get mapping right for bryce but you can`t import dynamic hair. The turbo import plugin only works with daz studio. Daz studio saves the objects in a way that bryce can use. You could download and install daz studio and just use it for exporting poser stuff to import to bryce?

Copy all the textures from your Poser dude and place them into the folder where the obj resides that you exported from Poser. Now Bryce should recognize the textures, but if it doesn't, it will ask you and you can politely show Bryce the textures. Grouper and Vuemaster are two apps that automatically write the obj to find the right textures, but it is SOOOOOO EASY to just copy the textures and put them in the folder where the obj is. SORRY I CANNOT HELP WITH THE HAIR.

yeah, the dynamic hair doesn't transfer over. I occasionally get clothes that won't make the move, either..;) I usually use some of the old stock hair (if it shows up in Poser as a series of bright lines instead of a solid object, it usually won't go into Bryce..at least in 4..I don't know about 5). Grouper is a good idea..I'm stubborn and actually look for all the 'x.jpg' files it asks for..
Failiing that, you can also use 'organic' (it's what I call them) mats in Bryce. Check Wolfie's Den, Lunariad.com, Pixel Wonder, freestuff here, and that should give you a few to work with. The results don't always look as nice, but in a pinch..they can work. good luck.

I want to thank everyone for their helpful replies! I've seen lots of online galleries where the artists said they used Poser for the figures, and Bryce for the backgrounds. I was wondering how they did it. I suppose they used the presets for hair, the 'non-dynamic' ones; but I don't remember their characters' hair having the plastic Ken-doll-look that mine are ending up with. The thought occurred to me to import the objects from my Bryce scene to Poser instead; but the textures of my mountain looked funny, though Poser seemed to be referencing something from the original Bryce file. AnyHOO, trees can't be exported from Bryce... : ( Well, I appreciate all the time each of you put in to respond to me; and I'm especially grateful for that link, xantor. Wow. All those groups reduced to just a few, easy to follow categories. Will be downloading that as soon as I post this. Thanks, y'all! : P

Late to the party as usual, but there's a tut on my site (in the "Tips" section) for importing Poser figures to Bryce and applying your textures manually. It'll certainaly explain how to make your non-dynamic hair look good.

Thanks a lot, slinger. I went to your site, and found that you answered one of my (unasked) questions. I had been checking the box for using exact internal names when exporting from Poser... Wow. It's going to be so much better to not have to click everything in the mesh names just to learn which thing assumed what name.

As for your tips page, I read the Poser to Bryce portion... I didn't see anything that specifically addressed the hair, unless it was the portion about transparency maps. I say that because I don't fully understand the transparency business; so that may be the crux of my problem. lol

I had previously found and loaded textures for my Poser figure (in Bryce). Afterwards, all the textures (except the non-dynamic hair) appeared the same as they did in Poser.

In your tips, you said, "If your figure has bump maps or transparency maps, you will need to load them into the second box, which holds the alpha channel. Just load the primary texture map..."
This brings me to a question: where in Poser do I see if there are bump maps or transparency maps? In the material palette? (I have seen image files referenced there...) Sorry for being so simple, but I've only been using Poser for about a month.

Well, I'll look the page over again when I'm a bit more fresh. (Looooooong day). Thank you so much for responding, and for the great tips on your site.

You're spot on, it's the part about the transparency maps that applies to the hair...and you're also spot on about looking in the Poser materials for bump and trans maps. See how much you already know, even if you didn't know you knew it. ~lol~ Always remember, the only dumb question is the one you're too shy to ask ;)

Slinger, thanks again, so much, for letting me know I'm on the right track. ;) I had dug through the files for all the textures for the clothes and skin, but man, I don't know why doing the same for the hair eluded me. This is great news for me! And I appreciate your attitude concerning the basic questions I asked. I did feel inadequate, but you just upped my confidence. ;)
