Amazing ... there is literally an inch between this shot being in focus (where I wanted it to be in focus) and not. One little inch further. Ah well ... can't nail 'em every time. -=>Donald

Hard to tell on such a small image.I gather you wanted more face. Certanly like the blur in back.

I like the focus on the face, especially the eyes. And the blurred back suits well. Great subject and composition, though the overexposed moon(?)distracted me a bit. Kora

dB - Yea, it is. The focus is probably right on the straw part that is near her left eye (eye closest to camera). An inch in and her face from her right eye to left would be in focus with background still as soft. Kora -Ummm ... not a moon. It's probably one of two things, either a torch or a street light. Looking at the shape, I'm gonna say street light. And I agree. If I was going to save this image, I would clone out that light as it competes with the subject.

Pure Perfection :)

sorry...i see no flaws. you know what you wanted and are disappointed. the light adds a element of fear.

Only after reading your reply to dB did I notice any difference in the focus. Its such a strong image that a portion, very slightly out of focus, would need to be pointed out to any one but a real perfectionist, and you'd have to be super critical to notice it when the DOF is so effective. Compelling picture, she has a great expression and yip, you should let us see it without the moon streetlamp torch bitty!!

[Gee, I love it when Donald talks dirty!] I think you'd be more unhappy if the grass was blurred. Were you shooting these with that f/1.8 monster wide open?

DHolman ( ) posted Thu, 11 November 2004 at 8:34 PM

Sheila and aangus - Yea, I think that's the problem for me. I know what I was trying to do, so I know I didn't do it. And with most things like that, it bugs me. :)

Misha - You've been hanging around Tedz and Cyn too long. :D I think with the focus pushed in a little, the grass stuff would still be in focus (notice her left shoulder is in focus in this one). The shoulder might go soft, but I'm not even sure of that. F/1.8? How dare you!!! F/1.8 indeed. F/1.2 sir!! Now apologize or I may just have to get out .... the comfy chair!!! :) Actually, it was a tiny bit stopped down. Here's the exif:
