The only tutorial I have ever read on the matrix bullet effect ,the little bubble trails were actually modeled in lightwave, this tutorial was in 3D World magazine issue 42 The3dZone

If I recall correctly, there were soe props in the marketplace that were specifically designed to creat ethis effect. And not mine. Damn.

There's a product here in the Market Place with that effect. See link. Friendly tip: bullets fire; shells stay behind.

What I want to know is why everyone shows the flying bullets with the brass still attached. That part stays with the gun!!

mateo_sancarlos ( ) posted Sat, 20 November 2004 at 3:32 PM

Yes, unless it's a self-satirical cartoon, lose the brass. The projectile leaves the barrel with a certain axial spin to counter differential physics effects during its flight. The Matrix vortex trail is a refractive effect, based on the difference in density between the vortex trail and the still air.

Lawndart ( ) posted Sat, 20 November 2004 at 5:37 PM

Those props are nice. In P5 I would do some texture work on them. I would make them approx 90% transparent. Really shiny. And I would use a bit of refraction to warp anyt objects that show throgh on the other side of the prop.

Methastopholis ( ) posted Sat, 20 November 2004 at 5:47 PM

man i just saw the picture i dont care bout the bullet i just wanted the trail effect secret.

Lawndart ( ) posted Sat, 20 November 2004 at 5:54 PM

No you don't! You don't want the effect... You want everybody that looks at this post to point out that the casing should not be fired from the gun. The effect has nothing to do with the fact that this is all wrong. You probably didn't even render the image but you still need to know that the casing should not be with the bullet. By the way... Have I mentioned that the casing should not be with the bullet. Hey? What's that cool effect on this incredibly incorrect image? It would be more cool if the casing wasn't on that bullet. LOL... Amazing isn't it?

marvlin ( ) posted Sat, 20 November 2004 at 6:05 PM

Hey! WTF! The casing shouldn't be still on the bullet! That stays in the gun! Admin??

Lawndart ( ) posted Sat, 20 November 2004 at 6:25 PM

Hey! Hey! If the casing stays on the bullet it might explode when it hits something making it an explosive projectile. This is great except for the fact that the casing shouldn't stay on the bullet. What did they do? Chuck the bullet with a wrist rocket? This is ALL WRONG! I wonder if this is a smart prop? Not too smart though. This would be a completely wrong prop. Can you save completely wrong props into the library? Is this a Poser bug?

Maybe i wasnt clear on my Question i did NOT make THIS PICTURE PEOPLE I got it off the internet somewhere .OK so the bullet is not what i focusing on, It wolud Be the I guess matrix trail sffect behined it . If you guys feel that strongly about the caseing do a google search for bullet and give him an ear full about his caseing issue , but me i just want to know how to make the cool trail effect. It therer a way to do this in p5 or PH7 ? please stick to my question ? not what some random internet pics Rating you want to give it!!!!

Becco_UK ( ) posted Sat, 20 November 2004 at 8:14 PM

Depends if you want it animated or still. For a still image try using a series of flattened P5 spheres so they are disc like. As above adjust transparency and refraction. I would also think about adding some 'wavy' noise into the bump channel and see what that looks like. For an animated effect you probably need the flattened spheres to appear as a trail behind the bullet. A Python script might be the solution there but I'm not very converant with Python - just seems outdated having to write scripts to achieve effects.

thanks Becco ill give it a try and get back to ya. Thank you

simontemplar ( ) posted Sat, 20 November 2004 at 8:44 PM

then again... some caseless bullets have also been put on study I think?=. In which case there should be no case at all even in the gun! :D

Lawndart ( ) posted Sat, 20 November 2004 at 9:49 PM

Methastopholis: I was not aiming this at you (sorry for the punn). I was poking fun at the people not answering the question and getting off the subject. I also answered your question in post #8 before I started poking fun at the others. Cheers, Joe

Here's my attempt! The bullet is a couple of poser primitives - a cylinder and a stretched sphere. For the trail I tried my idea mentioned above using flattened spheres - in this case a value of 20% was used, Some global slight variations to the spheres were also done. I didn't have time to mess with Poser 5's material room so the material shown is a simple transparent one. With more effort the results would have probably been better. Then in Paint Shop Pro I just added some motion blur. Seems like flattened cylinders (with a suitable material!)are the way to go in Poser

Wow, Becco, that's really cool. I had no idea you could do that in the Material Room!

Jackson ( ) posted Sun, 21 November 2004 at 11:12 AM

Sheese! It was just a friendly tip offered after I answered his question. Well, that's the last time I do that for anyone. BTW: For those who said the shell stays in the gun, that's not true with machine guns and automatics. The shells are ejected usually up and to the right of the shooter.

Which is why aiming the gun "gang-style" (holding it sideways) is silly. It's asking to get hit in the face with a hot shell.

Sorry Im so slow. Hows this? dynamic texture on a primitive cylinder. The reflection is of Enviros by ronstuff.

no problem LawnDartLawnDart its your punn that made me think my post was going in the wromg direction. I laughed when i read it. To all of you that gave me great advice THANK YOU. PS . One of you should make a TUTORIAL i think a lot of people take for granted the power of the Material ROOM. Thanks again im bout to get started on it . ill let you know if i succed or not

No Problemo... Not a big deal. I've been there many times. I didn't see any attitude. I should be more clear sometimes when I post. It sure teaches me to be more clear when I type. I sometimes need to remember that the text doesn't show that I'm grinning and having a good time. All the best, Joe

The prop must be oriented along the X axis and move in the x direction for animation. (we can fix that, but then the waves would not be fixed) Instead of a reflection I think Ajax camo shader would also look awesome.
