Subject: Dismayed by the "reception" I've received.

Natolii ( ) posted Wed, 24 November 2004 at 6:24 PM ยท edited Tue, 21 January 2025 at 5:58 PM

I wanted to post a scathing message based on a help request I posted here on 11/21... I'm going to be calm even though I feel as though this community doesn't seem to want to help out people. I asked for help with a texture for a few idea I have. I got met with a joking response (granted I replied in kind). Is this how you help a person? By making jokes then overlooking their requests for other's? This is directed at the community not the Mods nor the Admin's. I see much sound and fury about Paypal, and other such stuff, but find the cool reception to my request dismaying.

cableguy223 ( ) posted Wed, 24 November 2004 at 6:40 PM

gee , really sorry you had a bad exsperience, but whenever I've asked for help I have gotten some great tips and an abundence of info. Just keep trying. you'll find that the majority of the people in here are very helpful and surprizingly, as good as some of the artist are in renderosity, I havent run into any ego problems. Good luck and keep trying

mateo_sancarlos ( ) posted Wed, 24 November 2004 at 7:56 PM

Sorry about that. We'll try to be more helpful next time. Don't take it personally. Sometimes they'll make jokes in an effort to be friendly, but it may not always seem that way.

For help with textures I'd check out the 2D forums PSP, PSs, if you are going to use it for a 3D project I'd check out the particular forum for the software you are using, Vue, Bryce, C4D, Poser, etc.,you will get more help there than in this forum. I know for a fact if you post a question in the Bryce forum related to Bryce or not they will endeavor to answer it and help as much as humanly possible, guarranteed!

I can vouch for Zhan on the Bryce issue. Everytime I've asked for info or help in the Bryce forum I've gotten many responces and some great advice

Kendra ( ) posted Wed, 24 November 2004 at 8:20 PM

I've had no real problems with people answering questions but I have been very irritated at people whom I've taken the time to answer and they couldn't be bothered to say so much as thank you. It's actually something that happens more here than anywhere else for some reason. It's also the reason I don't respond too much in the poser forum anymore.

I posted in the Poser Forum personally. And on two other sites. I even ask Khrys but feel real bad about bugging him.

KarenJ ( ) posted Thu, 25 November 2004 at 12:47 AM

Hi Natolii, I am sorry you felt your request was overlooked. May I suggest this: as you asked for someone to create a texture for a prop for you, if you are willing to pay for this item, then perhaps you should consider posting in the Jobs/Resumes forum. Also, as that item is not sold at Renderosity and is a "specialist" item, you may receive a better response by posting at a site where it is sold and that people may have more chance of owning that prop and being able to fulfil your request. I can assure you that most people are more than willing to respond to requests for help. However, making textures is a very lengthy, time-consuming process and texture-makers usually expect to be compensated for their efforts. Kind regards, Karen Poser Forum Coordinator

Karen;

I could appreciate that, if someone had bothered to say something sooner. Instead, I posted here, and two other sites. The prop in question was sold here until the policy change. I figured I might have some measure of help by covering the three sites I frequent (including the site I made the purchase at.)

Instead out of three sites, I received one response. That was here and it was cracking a joke...

That's what annoyed me more than not getting the help. Finding that people don't give a flying flip when you ask a question. Yes, I answered in kind when I first saw the message. Yet it has become evident that was all I could expect unless I let loose my temper a tiny bit.

I am looking for help in learning too. I need something a lot less technical then the "Texturing for Dummies" that is posted on this site. I suffer from ADD and that surfaces when I am required to do more technical reading. so is it very frustating when "THAT" is the only response.

I have to make myself look like a whining witch in order to make people see how rudely I was treated.

Well, so be it.

Hi Natolii, I'm sorry that you feel the response you received was rude; however perhaps you can understand that if nobody is willing to do that work for free for you, then nobody will respond. (After all, it would be pretty pointless for a load of people to have responded simply to say "Sorry I can't/don't want to help"!) Stacey_73 is running a Texturing 101 series over at RuntimeDNA at the Skin Texturing forums, perhaps this can give you some ideas for making the texture for yourself. Alternatively, if you are willing to compensate someone for their time in making such a texture, you might find a texture artist willing to do work with you. Kind regards, Karen

Karen; If I wanted someone to work for free, I would not have made an attempt to do it myself... I also am on a limited Budget and cannot offer that which I do not have. I have a child that has to come first. If someone was willing to give me a hand, all they had to do is say something. Even a tip to help get started. Which is what I got elsewhere and I have a WIP picture over at Renderotica (Due to the nature of the piece, I felt it safest to be posted there.)

KarenJ ( ) posted Thu, 25 November 2004 at 12:51 PM

Glad to hear you got the help you needed, Natolii. And it sounds like R'otica is probably the best place for it, given the nature, I agree :-)

Just to follow-up, I've actually stumbled upon exactly what I was looking for and all you need is a Genital Texture for M3 and the Poser 5 Material Room. In this case I used Daio's texture, making sure to note the settings she used on the body texture (I'll post a write up when I get home and can take screen shots). I then applied the texture and settings to both the Trans and Solid zones of the figure... And Voila, Instant Drow G4 Texture with no reworking of templates or textures involved. I stumbled across this because Sixus1 provides MT5 files with their Demonicus Figure. I was able to take and apply this method to Demonicus and it worked great. (Now to figure out how to save this as a MAT file and then I'm in real business.)

Yeah, I should have known that one...heh

sixus1 ( ) posted Tue, 30 November 2004 at 1:58 AM

Well, Natolii, if you ever want me to show you really quickly some time how to make them by hand I can. I think that it is good to know how to do stuff by hand so that you get to know the files and can become innovative if the occasion should ever arise and the application that you have can't do it. --Rebekah--

Natolii ( ) posted Tue, 30 November 2004 at 6:02 AM

Sure, what I will do is go make a post over in your forums, Rebekah.

No one is going to purchase and attach the G4 prop to a model unless they need it for special purposes. Michael is already hung like a bear (as one forumite described it). The quote I referenced is from Milton. I'm deeply sorry if you are offended by classical allusions. "The other shape, If shape it might be call'd that shape had none Distinguishable, in member, joint, or limb; Or substance might be call'd that shadow seem'd, For each seem'd either; black he stood as night; Fierce as ten furies; terrible as hell; And shook a deadly dart. What seem'd his head The likeness of a kingly crown had on." The puns are subtle and elegant. Milton was referring to Satan as Death, even as God is Life, and since he was blind was giving Satan a vividly pictorial description. Since drow are black, evil, and a people apart, dwelling in the nether regions, this seemed quite a proper equasion on my part. I sincerely doubt if any drow would object to being demonized in this manner, indeed, being compared to the Great Destroyer would be an honor. The word "ejaculation" means to dart forth suddenly and is from the latin "jaculum"... a dart or javelin. Satan is often shown with an upright phallus... thus the dreadful dart. (The O.E.D. has some delightfully wicked quotes, but even a standard Random House has the origin.) Daio's drow have silvery tattoos which look like lightning bolts or jeweled fillets, so the "likeness of a crown" fits nicely. So what do we have? An image of a mightly awesome lordly drow such as Daio's drow sorcerer with magical signs all over him ejaculating while shaking an upright monster-sized phallus. Again, why else would you need the G4 prop? I don't see anything in my post or my allusion which is demeaning, disrespectful, derogatory or otherwise deserving of a scathing retort much less a community-wide complaint about noncompliance. If anything, I'm crediting you with literacy! If you don't feel like you were properly served, perhaps you could have phrased your statement as a request for help, and used the words please and thank you, especially if you want others to work for you with any enthusiasm. Most of us are indeed quite willing to help. Carolly

Natolii ( ) posted Tue, 30 November 2004 at 11:48 PM

No if anything it prompted me to make an attempt to learn it myself. And for that I am thankful to the motivation. BTW, I am not familiar with Milton so the reference was a tad over my head. Literacy, yes, but I was more a Shakespeare type of person. I am actually working on a bit of illustrated RP with a few other people over at Deadly Illusions, and the drow themselves do enjoy their pleasures. To be honest, The original genital figure that come with Michael is not as hung like a horse as people make it out to be. Clinical stand point mind you. If the original post (Not this thread) was as course as people are tkaing it for, then I apologize for it. Purely unintentional. In fact I should know better than to post when sick, tired of upset. My disability tends to kick in and what I think is fine and clear to me is not as clear to others...

I am in the 4th year of a continuous migraine (1 more year and I'll be a statistic), so I understand about posting when tired or cranky. If we were limited to only chatting when we were in perfect health and happiness, few would be in here typing because we'd all be out in the daylight having fun. If I was doing nude males, I'd probably be using a prop as well, just so that a man on his side wouldn't be sticking straight out but hanging naturally. I have to confess that the first thing I did when getting Poser was to load the nude male. Found the dial and rotated the penis on the x-axis. Yup, that worked. Rotated the body 90 degrees. Nope. No gravity. He looked pretty funny laying there with the penis straight out like a coat rack... so that was my very first render. Those stage magicians in Vegas are missing a bet. Instead of the too-typical floating ladies with the tuxedoed magician passing rings around their bodies, the blonde magician could have a Chippendale's sort of man laying there with maybe a tassel and a smile and let ladies from the audience play ring toss. :) (Note: rubber rings aren't nearly as deadly as those daggers the men throw at women turning on the wheel, and it seems fair to have an attraction for the ladies.) It's been 30 years since I read Milton. The composition of his works must have been onerous... to hold the whole story in his mind but only phrase it as fast as his daughter could write it down, and not be able to go back and make changes. Sheesh... I'm always editing! However, if I was to hold a dinner party, Shakespeare would be the preferred guest. He knew more stories and his POV was so very human. One never knows when the perfect quote will come to mind, but I should have remembered it a bit more exactly. Shakespeare is easier to remember, too. ;) Illustrating a sequential story can be a lot of fun. You get to add personality to your characters that develops with time and experiences. BTW, Daio did a witch character with black cat (I got it over at PoserPros), and the cat is done with her drow technique. Perhaps in your story you'll have room for some animals and rabbits, ferrets, snakes all burrow underground. Carolly

Well, Mind Flayers and Gazers, with a few demons thrown in for giggles. I'm more of a AD&D type of person when it comes to rendering. I started playinf around with Vicky and Daio's drow and created my first render that way. That was after spending about a month figuring out how to get things to load etc.etc.etc.

hauksdottir ( ) posted Thu, 02 December 2004 at 1:56 AM

You didn't have to mention Gazers! :( One of my favorite characters (a Gnome Illusionist) was down to a single life point after dealing with an Undead Gazer. If it wasn't undead, the sawdust trick would have worked. I'm rather amazed by the number of my fellow role-players who use Poser to recreate their characters or scenes from their adventures. At least one of them has gone beyond that to some fairly complicated imagery. Carolly

Natolii ( ) posted Thu, 02 December 2004 at 5:41 AM

One of the artists here is a good friend of mine from Rolepaying... SO yeah, there seems to be a desire to create more for the characters.
