Subject: Help Please?!? NEW (to me) Poser 4.03 issue!

The bottom line is that ANYTHING I load into the working area, figures, props, etc is basically invisible (no matter what display setting I choose)! The only way one would know that there is a figure there is by selecting a body part in the work area as I have done here with Mikey's right thigh where that body part becomes faintly visible as seen in this capture! The scenario is that I was happily working back and forth between VUE4 and Poser4 last nite...called it a nite to finally watch Van Helsing...what a disjointed plot that was '-)...and when I opened Poser this AM to do a few pre-work tweaks this is what I have run into! I *did* install an "InterActual Player" set-up to access some of the features but have since removed that hoping that may have been the issue but to no avail! I have tried at least five uninstall/reinstalls as well... Also! As you may have noticed in this capture...when I do enlarge the work area what you see here is what happens! AND I have tried to use system restore...but to add to my misery...for some reason my 'puter (less than a month old...btw) can not access any of these points!! Please! Any help/ideas/suggestions would be so greatly appreciated 'cuz my VUE4/5 render get REAL lonely without some Poser figures in 'em '-)! Thanks in advance, ==steve==

Thanks for the ideas, netta...but as I said somewhere in that lengthy moan '-)...I have tried all document settings and I believe that 4.03 is the last/most current update? Hopefully you're right that others might chime in on this 'cuz I feel like I've lost a body part myself trying to do renders without Posers '-)!

I've had this problem before. I couldn't get it corrected, either. Somehow I'd completely trashed my registry and for some reason the Poser related bits would not restore. It happened around the time when I was ready to buy P5 so I gave up on it eventually. P5 installed without a problem. Sorry if this is bad news for you. I'm certain there must be a solution but I have no idea what it is.

Hmmmm? Certainly not the best of news '-)...but at least it gives me somewhere to look...running WinDoctor right now to see if it can't rectify any registry issues? Thanks for the pointer anyways '-)! ==steve==

What about a reinstall of Poser 4? You might even try removing the software from your hard disk. Back up your Runtime folders -- the uninstall shouldn't take off any files NOT in the install list anyway, but it wouldn't hurt to backup anything you're afraid to loose. Then do a fresh install of Poser 4. Good Luck, Rance

spider1313 ( ) posted Thu, 02 December 2004 at 3:20 PM

Thanks, Rance...but I have uninstalled from the Control Panel as well as through the Poser uninstall option. And trust me '-) I'm a veteran of having Runtimes all over the place...LOL...so that part of it wouldn't be an issue! BTW...I am now up to reinstall #6...gonna wear the installation disc out 'fore this thing gets remedied I'm afraid '-)! ==steve==

Change your display res. either up or down, change freq. (75Hz, 85Hz, etc) That should solve the problem. Some of those DVD-rom bonus extras use wacky software that tries to use vid cards' overlay features but wind up screwing up.

spider1313 ( ) posted Thu, 02 December 2004 at 5:22 PM

Yes! Yes! Yes! Thank you so much, ted! You are a saviour '-)! I have never been so happy to see the P4 dork that I have to get rid of with every reintstall that I may even let him stick around for a while! Thanks again! ==steve==

spider1313 ( ) posted Thu, 02 December 2004 at 6:35 PM

No! No! No! Just closed Poser to get rid of all the libraries that I never use and when I reopen it, it is back to the same problem! Tried different screen resolutions and every refresh rate available and still no luck! And just when I thought we had it?!? Any other ideas, puleaaase '-)? ==steve==

Steve, it sounds like you're deleting libraries and things you don't need. I wonder if that is part of the problem. Also, if you have Poser 4, all your stuff should only be in the main Poser Runtime. So maybe I misinterpreted your statement about Runtimes all over the place? You might consider running CorrectReference (free) to see if that will help your problem. There is a chance your Poser installation is so mixed up that only CorrectReference Pro (CRPro) can help fix the problem. If so, you can find it here in the Marketplace.

Had something similar once .. happened immediately after I played with the virtual memory settings in XP. There is a memory issue with puters above a certain memory level (early morning here, caffeine hasn't kicked in yet, brain not functioning) with a patch file available at CL. It's also possible the prog you installed and removed had a tinker with your virtual memory, but didn't put it back how it was. There are threads around here on this issue .. do a search and good luck. btw 4.03 is the latest P4 issue. But your new powerful machine prolly needs that memory patch.

A possible help.. Back up your entire MetaCreations folder in a Zip, Rar, or whatever it is you use immediately after installing Poser 4 & the .03 update. Delete 1 of the folders you're removing and test Poser.. if it works, delete the backup, and make a new one (now lacking that folder) Repeat until you find what you're deleting that causes the problem.

or, if you really want to torture yourself, un install, run regedit, use the find feature in the edit menu and search for metacreations through the entire registry, then delete anything that shows up. no metacreations, find for curious labs. still no joy, find poser. also, search for and delete anything left from the realactual player. then exit regedit after deleting every registry key. then re-install poser. if still no joy. wipe the drive and rebuild everything.

Online Now!

The invisible character phenomenon is usually linked to having too much memory. If you're certain you have all the applicable updates from Curious Labs, including the memory updater, check your virtual memory size. If it's really big ( >2GB ) try reducing it below that figure. Let us know what Windows version you're running if you need more detail on that.

Thanks to all for your ideas/suggestions/thoughts as I am sure that I WILL eventually use each and every one of 'em AND thank goodness, being the computer illiterate that I am, that English Bob's thoughts turned out to be correct! I did indeed have my minimum set to over 3GB and upon lowering it to just under 2Gig all is (for now anyhoo) well'-)!! And thanks to moochie as well for reminding me to get that memory updater...knew there was something that was missing from the new toy '-)! And @ Bobbie Boucher...I do have multiple Runtimes, it's just that my Runtime is so large...bet we all have that lament, eh '-)?...that I install and remove various libraries as needed depending on the render I am currently working on.
Thanks to all and I'm sure that somewhere down the road my fleeting memory will require me to use each and every one of these suggestions '-)!! ==steve==

You have Poser 4, and you swap your Runtimes in and out?! That's a disaster waiting to happen. I wish you all the best. You'll need it. As for swap files, why not just let Windows make the decisions and adjustments for you?!

Hmm, I had a much worse prob. Namley updated to see if cold get the Cat-girl for Aiko to work for me (well it did but when went to render got that one annoying error, caught c) and so got it loaded went to open and then got asked if wanted to let it access the net, well said yes and then went into an error fest X_x that drove me nuts, so had to uninstall and reinstall the copy I have. I'll be buying poser Artist down the road to kind of help fix this I hope.
