Might as well call myself Rochr... I mean it's not enough I stole the guy's technique for lighting, I listened to him on the red and blue spotlight thingies. Have to say he's given me some really good pointers, and I love him long time to the point of wanting to have his babies (twins, even!). Really. But yeah. Rendered at 300dpi, standard render, 3700x2711 pixely thingies. Then postwork. Three plates here, 2 rendered (one with general lighting and buildings, another with just the building lights), and then a bit too many lens flares and stuff. Now it's time to add some clouds+starfield+saturn-type-planet. Comments, crits, appreciated :) drac

Wow it really starts to light up now, much better than just the white lights you had in your scene before.

Love the colors, a dark sky with stars and planet will really make this stand out....one thing though and this is just me, some mist or fog, haze whatever you want to call it at the base of the buildings. Also what does the city lit just from below with stars/planet above look like, is there going to be air traffic?....=)

drac - I am forced to admit that it's masterly ;^) Agree with Zhann that it need the contrast of a darker sky for all sorts of reasons.

draculaz ( ) posted Sat, 04 December 2004 at 5:36 AM

agreed, pog, and zhann, sure, there's gonna be loads of air traffic using the same lighting as from the scene :)

Hey - is that building just behind the thingummybob MEANT to look like a robot with heavy-lidded eyes?

Looking really good now, I am not a sci-fi buff, but this is great. Agree with Zhann about darker sky.

:-) People are mentioning the obviously unfinished part. So I won't..... Nope, can't find anything else. looks perfect to me. I like the plasma thingy. I was a little worried about it being such a focus to the image, but I don't think it is, so that's cool. The coloured lighting really gives it some life. Good ole Rochr. Just imagine the wonders your children would have.

Fantastic progress Mihn. There are a couple points I would like to touch on here. In reference to Rochr's technique, his mastery is broad based, yet I think one of the main components is: he usually makes the viewer part of the composition by pulling the scene perspective right out to the edge. Foreground, Mid-scene, and Background. Focus can vary depending on the main subject matter. From what I know of Rochr, I don't think he consciously plans it that way, I've heard him say he sees it in his head & just does it. Cruise his Gallery and you will see what I'm talking about. Also on his Rosity homepage you'll find links to artists such as: jjsmlee http://www.renderosity.com/gallery.ez?ByArtist=Yes&Artist=jjsmlee and: sbleci http://www.renderosity.com/gallery.ez?ByArtist=Yes&Artist=sbleci Check out both of their galleries too. Mindblowing stuff for study. The building on left in the foreground could be larger or actually closer to the camera. Yes, You'll lose some of the buildings in the Mid-scene and the wonderful lighting cast by your center subject, however what you'll gain in perspective will more than make up for it. Observe the focus too, wether you blur & darken the foreground or the opposite. My main advice, study these three galleries, you'll begin to understand what I'm pointing out when you break their compositions down technically. Noise Focus Perspective Lighting OK I'll shut up now. Ruv U Rong Time Drac. (and I'd reconsider the babies...their gonna have tentacles, could be painful) Nuthin personal Rudy. LOL ICM

Looks pretty amazing to me as is.

tentacles? perv. but yeah, there's still something to be added in the foreground. this is just the background =D drac (medium background, anyway)

Now this is what were talking about. The colors definitely add more depth to the scene.
Just dont use a totally dark sky in the back. Better tone it from white/blue (closest to the city), to black, to avoid too much contrast.

I would tone down the heavy blue on the building in the right corner though, to something like what you have in the left. But if youre going to have more stuff in the foreground, it would probably cover most of it anyway.

A hint of a structure in the foreground would give it even more depth i think. Kinda like giving the superb background a nice framing, and it can easily be rendered separatly.
It wouldnt even have to be colored, as long as you have some lights reflecting on it from the city.

Either way, this is a freakin great entry to the challenge!

Btw, thanx for all the praise guys.
And i keep telling Drac that human/alien DNA can result in a really nasty lifeform, but he just wont listen... :)

I think this is pretty damn good so far!!! The only suggestion I would have to add, and I stress this is just a suggestion...You might wanna try adding a little noise overall to the entire scene. Just a slight bit. It will dirty up the textures just enough to take the edge off of it looking like a freshly rendered 3d look. It will also add a little more depth. Like I said it's just a suggestion, and completely up to your personal tastes. Well done so far :-)

Excellent work so far drac...been fun to watch it evolve. Other than the stuff you've not finished yet, and probably to echo to what ICM is on about...I don't get a real sense of depth like you would if the further buildings were effected by haze or fog. If this is truly background then the foreground structures should probably be this sharp and these, as background, a little hazed out. Looking forward to the final version...versions.

Gee, I remember when you wanted to have Kurt's babies... Guess I can't complain if you'd like to preserve the Hungarian bloodlines though. ;) Your cross cultural experience over at CGTalk seems to be paying off, even if you never did hook up with that South African texturing artist. Good stuff.
