OK. Well some of you may already know this, but as I've never read anything on this I'm betting you don't and I'm gonna try to make some sort of TUT.

This all stems from an accidental mouse click and the earlier posts about GREEBLES and NURNIES (SS)

I noticed whil messing around with the DEEP TEXTURE EDITOR (DTE) that there seemed to be a lot of nice DTs that would be great for making hight maps and Greebles. But how to get at them.

Now while I was messing about I accidently clicked on the lower-middle square of the DTE screen. To my amazment the Texture popped up FULL-SCREEN!!!!
(Actually not the whole thing but most of it anyway.)
So, suddenly I had a large version on screen and all I had to do was screen-grab and I would have myself a half-decent hight-map to use in making greebles.

All you need for this to work is Photoshop/PSP7 or somesuch and Bryce and away we go.

Please be patient with me and DON'T interupt!

1: Load up Bryce (obviously but in case Drac's reading this...)
2: Drop in a prim and apply a nice complicated 'Technical' looking .mat
3: hit the 'M' to get into the Mat Lab
4: Look for the button I've labelled '1' to get to the DTE.

OK! So now here's where the real fun begins. click on the full screen image to get back to the DTE. Then, click where I've placed the # key. This brings up the NOISE slider/selector. Click on the green part (top left) of the selector. This will bring up another little box.

These are just a few textures/hieght maps I grabbed in 30 mins of messing around. I'm sure you guys will do better. The thing is, when you have one you really like, loading it into PS or PSP and grey-scaling brings out no end of stuff you can drop into the Bryce Terrain Editor to make Greebles or cities or whatever you like. Feel free to add your own observations or corrections if you think I've got this wrong. Thanks for your patience, and thanks for reading. Have fun! I'm going to!

Finally, I just remembered, did you know you can click+drag pics from squares 2 & 3 of the DTE and swop them around?

Interesting topic greebles and nurnies, I must have missed that thread. Heres some interesting read on them and I also include a metropolis building tut using them in 3D StudioMax and its greebles plug-in for anyone interested. Enjoy;

Yep, knew about all this, Bryster. So should everyone who Bryces. Very nicely explained.

You went to a lot of trouble to explain all this. I just would like to thank you for that! It's very much appreciated. As a side note. I haven't posted any Bryce stuff in a while but I have been a Brycin'. Just aint been a postin' it. Working on learning a few more things before sending it to the Bryce gallery. Thanks again. See, that's why I stay away from the DTE...waaayyyyy too many hidden features. Some, I am sure connected to either the CIA or the KGB. Awesome explanation though Bryster. THANKS!

I knew all the rest, but DUH!!! never knew how to access the controls you show in post #6. I've seen screenshots of it in various tutorials, and skipped right on by 'cos I thought it was something from Bryce4 that had been discontinued. DUH! again. One thing I always wish was possible in the DTE is...to be able to select the components of the first three boxes, same as you can in the final combination box, rather than having a button that only randomizes. Or am I wrong, is it possible to choose a particular component?

Oh, thanks. But, re your post nr. seven. I've got a bug there. If I fiddled with textures or if it's a complicated texture, when I click on the list of types, it springs out in front of the Materials Lab and I cannot select anything cause I don't see the cursor or the checkmark for the DTE. Seen anything similar?

pogmahone ( ) posted Tue, 07 December 2004 at 8:41 AM

I get odd things happening sometimes when I click to change the formula in the Filter controls. The DTE disappears altogether, and I have the work area instead.

Erlik: Sorry! Everything seems to work fine for me. Pog: Again, sorry! I've only been messing with this for a couple of hours and I'm no expert when it comes to DTE. I'm not sure I understand your q about componants in the 1st three boxes, but...if you look towards the top of the DTE menu screen you'll see 2 faded grey curved arrows labelled 'Parallel' & 'Maximum' (They might be labelled something else on your but I'm talking about post #6.) Clicking on these brings up another set of options! You might try playing with these and see what you get. Quest: Thanks for the links! Shame that plugin can't be used in Bryce. Thanks to all you guys for your nice comments. I hope you enjoy playing with this. It's the 1st time I've really sat down and made a 'serious' tut, but it was fun, so w.t.h. !!!

Bryster: The grey curved arrows bring up the menu for how the components are "blended". The one between component one and two blend those two components and the one between two and three blend those two components. Experiment to see what the results will be for each type of "blending". It's hard (for me, anyway) to predict exactly what will happen in the DTE. They didn't call it the "Deep" Texture Editor for nothing. :^) You can get lost in there for hours.

i used to be afraid of the dte. its not that its hard, its that it doesnt make "sense"... all the words and terminology buried into that make it so much more confusing than it really is, and the manual (or at least the 1 that came w/ bryce 4) didnt do a good job explaining it at all... even with the most elaborate tutorial, trial and error is the only way to get used to the dte. you need to "see" what happens as it goes down, and there are truly 1000's of different combos to try, manipulate, learn and explore... a standing ovation for the effort and time put into this bryster :D
