I am due to travel to the UK again the week of Jan 24th. Hopefully with a chance this time to track down at least the Bryster for a pint(...of vodka.) I know that the issue of relocation will once again come up during this trip. My company wants to move me and the family (wife and three kids) over there. The office is in Slough, I typically stay in Windsor but... I have no clue where I'd even begin to look for quasi-affordable, decent living space neighborhood ...stuff...I am pretty sure both Windsor and Slough are right out, aside from that I have no idea. Not a good time to buy in the UK at present..house prices are still upwardly mobile. Will have a chat around and see what emerges!

it all depends upon your budget of course, and how far you are willing to commute. i live in an area where a 3 bed semi would go for about 150,000, but thats on an island at the mouth of the thames. (if your in central london in the new year, be happy to meet for a pint)

Prices drop as you move away from London, i.e. towards Bracknell and Reading. I live a little outside Bristol, work in Swindon, so I'm about an hour/ hour and a half drive away, would be nice to meet you though Clay! I have a few friends and relatives who live around the Bracknell area can do some research on where is good/bad around there if you want.

You could look at Maidenhead or High Wycombe. Wycombe is a longer commute, but there is more housing, it's more affordable, and there are better facilities. I lived in Wycombe for about 5 years; it has a range of areas, some deprived, some very up-market, and some average. You would probably pay around 180k-250k for a 3-bed semi in the average areas. Wycombe's advantages are that it is surrounded by beautiful countryside & picturesque villages, it is close to the Thames (you can see the Henley regatta, feed the swans and watch the people with too much money trying to squeeze their huge motor launches under the low bridges), it has a good shopping center, a traditional market and a theatre, and it has good motorway connections and is only 25 minutes from London on the train. I still have the contact number of a lettings agency in that area, if you are interested. Windsor is a very up-market area, but very expensive. Slough is notoriously unpleasant, and Reading is heading the same way. Camberley is not too nice, and areas on the Thames like Egham, Henley and Marlow are extremely expensive, as is Beaconsfield. There is still some affordable housing in the tiny villages in the Wycombe-Maidenhead-Slough triangle, but they are all miles from anywhere, and anything that's cheap is likely to be a bit run-down. That's a very good Point Judyk. I was asking friends who do live towards the Beaconsfield and Farnham Common areas and they are saying prices are high, but that there are some good deals to be had. High Wycombe is a nice place. On a seasonal note I used to visit (workwise) a place in the Farnham Common area in Cristmas Lane!

GogCA1 - did I ask you before where you lived? I used to live in Bath, also just outside Bath near Bradford-on-Avon. But I travelled to Bristol all the time, to the St. George area, I used to design for a big concrete paving company there. My sister still lives just outside Bath (she used to work in the MoD in Bath) in Hinton Charterhouse, which is mighty like an Agatha Christie village lol.

Hi Pog, I live in Yate, but in a secluded spot so it's pretty nice. My Uncle used to work for MoD at Copenacre in Corsham - not far from Bath (small world!). We looked at houses in Hinton, but the one we bought in Yate was an absolute perfect spot, with protected woodland opposite, a good school and a pub both visible from the front door :)

Well all the above have got me beaten to the punch. I was gonna suggest that I get hold of some Estate Agents (Realtors) and find you some info......

Anyway, I'm about 250miles from Slough/Windsor and the others are so much nearer, apart from Pog and Sam that is.

And I was just going to mention a really nice hotel/pub/restaurant in the area, run by an Irish family. My son worked there for a while before relocating to Donegal.(Yes Chris that's in Ireland!)
