medeival style baggage: leather satchel, sacks, tied up roll of blankets, goblet and bowl with handle, small wooden chest, spare sword, coil of rope, net bag with random vegetables in it, wineskins, small box containing spices and salt durned if I know what cowboys need though :) guess some of the same things thanks Haigan .. I know I'll be needing this for my big project :) Lyrra
Modern stuff would probably be in duffel bags but also include rolled sleeping bags and tents (small 2-man and large walk-in styles) camp stove and their fuel bottles (google images for "MSR fuel bottles") tarps (rolled or folded), ropes, tools (shovels, picks, hammers) poles and tripods. scientific instruments, lap top computers and similar such gear stereotypically travels in aluminum luggage (google images for "aluminum luggage") also consider a tool box style containers. For modern, and or a little less modern, you would probably do good to have small wooden crates.

Suggestions? Bundles of sticks. Rolled and stowed tent fabrics and stakes. And, especially popular from the middle ages thru the old west; the portmaneau (not sure of the spelling), a kind of cylendrical leather suitcase. Today they're mostly reserved for carrying large maps and blueprints in long narrow tubes, but for many years they were made in a variety of lengths and diameters with straps and rings for securement to saddles and wagons. Sometimes made like a capped-quiver style arrangement, sometimes split and hinged along the length with encircling straps and buckles to secure. Wodden palanquin (again, not really sure of the spelling, or even if it's the proper word, but I'd describe it as a crossed wooden framework used on pack animals to create something like a mini truck-bed atop the animal's back (often used with camels as well - http://camelphotos.com/sphoto/arabs_camels.jpg ) for freight or passengers. Wooden chests and coffers, too.
portmanteau - something of a precursor to the duffel bag :) http://www.7ehussards.org/outfitting/portmanteau.htm http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/content/Item/21/53/77/i215377sq01.jpg

specialized gear... For prospectors: pick, shovel, spoons, canteen, lantern, pie-pan-shaped thing for sloshing the iron filings away from the gold dust. For surveyers & explorers: tripod folded up (it can support instruments or cameras, doesn't have to actually unfold... just look like a collapsed tripod), boxes with labels, tubular map case. Adventurers: coiled rope, small boxes, small pots with potions or lamp oil. If you have a lidded basket, a few boxes (metal, wood), a rolled bedroll, and a water bottle or canteen, you've covered the basics for a long swath of time. Almost anything that you do will be highly useful to a lot of us. :) Carolly

Yup, I've finally got back to the horse pack saddle I was working on ages back. I'm doing various loads to fit the saddle: historical/fantasy and modern. I'm not making any promises, but has anybody got any suggestions/requests for 'stuff' to include in the baggage?
A while back someone was looking for a pack saddle and I offered to send the basic .obj to use as a static prop. I've lost the IM, I'm afraid, but if you still need the prop and get back in touch it's now in a fit state to use. :)
