Subject: Poserworld: Am I missing something or is it REALLY hard to search for things?

wes_brown ( ) posted Tue, 11 January 2005 at 9:10 AM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 7:45 AM

Hey guys. Is the only way to search for things on poserworld to sift through their updates? Is there no catagory search like DAZ? Also, I am on a mac and I need to make sure that the stuff on poserworld isn't just for PC. I see no contact number. Are these files generally compatable across operating systems? Thanks in advance! wes

When members log in, they see a page with links associated with varioius meshes. There's also a "what's new" link, as well as a new link for items that are compatable with multiple meshes. It's really not very hard to find things there, and can be fun to browse. There's a search tool as well, which I've used ... it works. I don't know much about cross-platform compatability but I've never seen anyone say that Poswerworld items won't work on a Mac. Perhaps a Mac Poser user can help out here?

Theres a .PDF file which lists most of their files. Apart from the most recent updates.

I use P5 on a mac and their files work great for me! HTH! ;D Edited to say: I just run them through maconverter like everything else. But yes, they are in regular zip files and work just fine on a mac ;D

we're working on building a new site thats easier to search and update. For now, I suggest downloading the PDF, using that to find the names of things, and then using the search function. The serach is actually quite good, as long as you know what you are looking for. I'll be updating the PDF shortly .. I do it about every other month. The clothing is divided into categories by figure, so you should be able to go through and pick out what you like. We use the regular zip with folders method, except for some of the older files. Havent heard of any problems from mac users, p5 users or DS users ... so you should be alright. Running content thorugh macconverter would be a good idea, just to make sure. Lyrra

One of the problems with the existing search tool is that if it throws up many links, and you click on one and it's not what you want, and you click back, the results try and update themselves all over again, which is slow. It would be handy also to have forward and back buttons for browsing through the pages.

When it comes to Poserworld, I take the expedient of simply downloading everything in sight.

Except stuff for the 'toon figures/Freak, which I do not now -- nor will I ever -- need.

At PW, I have never had to search for anything.

I have to re-up. It's one of the best deals going. Reliable, too. That counts for a lot.

Actually, thhe pdf is great! It is even easier than some of the web seaarches i have seen. (I don't know how I missed it at first...I guess I am like a trained monkey in that way!) BTW, I can use michael 2 clothing on michael 3 with something called "legacy features" right? I have heard of this before... I think I use the "mike 3 to mike 2" figure correct?

When I first joined, I did indeed download everything there was to date. Now I download everything from the What's New Section. It doesn't matter if I have the figure that goes with the clothes. I'm liable to buy the figure later, and it will have a full closet waiting.

P5 on a dual G5 here, OSX 10.3. I've recently downloaded and run a lot of stuff from Poserworld into P5 w/o MacConvertor, and it works just fine - I just use a small utility (it's in the MP somewhere) to make .png files (Why no MacConvertor? I don't have Classic installed, don't want Classic installed...) /P

wes_brown ( ) posted Tue, 11 January 2005 at 3:01 PM

It's in the "mp"? What do you men exactly...?

Bobbie_Boucher ( ) posted Tue, 11 January 2005 at 3:05 PM

MP= Marketplace, Renderosity's Store.

"I can use michael 2 clothing on michael 3 with something called "legacy features" right? I have heard of this before... I think I use the "mike 3 to mike 2" figure correct?" That's exactly right. :-) The easy way to think of that mesh is that it's M3's head on M2's body. You won't be able to inject M3 body morphs into it, neither does it have M2's body morphs, but you can inject M3's head/facial morphs into it.

makes sense! Thanks for your help!

I find the Search tool is one of the best around..I use it alot. When the reults come up I right click to open in new window so my list is always available.

One of the problems with the existing search tool is that if it throws up many links, and you click on one and it's not what you want, and you click back, the results try and update themselves all over again, which is slow. Right click on the link and open in a new window (or a new tab, if you're using tabbled browsing). Then you don't have to go "back" and nothing gets reset. If it's not what you want, you can just close that window or tab. bonni

I've found the search tool to be clunky. But everytime I find a link there, I always right-click and open a new window. That way I don't lose my place. But hey, they're redoing the site, and it surely will be grand.

coolbanana68 ( ) posted Thu, 13 January 2005 at 8:41 AM

I have looked at the pdf file and it's great except I cannot tell whether clothing is conforming or dynamic. Is there a way of distinguishing?

Bobbie_Boucher ( ) posted Thu, 13 January 2005 at 8:59 AM

Most of the clothing would be conforming. I think they only did a couple dynamic clothing items.

coolbanana68 ( ) posted Thu, 13 January 2005 at 9:28 AM

Thanks, I haven't figured out how to use dynamic clothing yet so I am sticking to conforming clothing. PW looks like a great subscription - the stuff on there looks amazing!

Bobbie_Boucher ( ) posted Thu, 13 January 2005 at 11:47 AM

Everytime I look at a tutorial on Dynamic clothing, I panic. They're talking about making clothes into props, running animation sequences, etc. It makes me weak in the knees, so I stay away from it. One nice thing about Poserworld is that they do versions of the same outfit for several different figures: Vicky 2 & 3, etc.

Lyrra ( ) posted Thu, 13 January 2005 at 12:02 PM

the dynamic clothing is in a separate category in the PDF index. We havent made a lot, since the bulk of our users still use poser4. We think. Hard to tell sometimes :)
