Subject: Poser5 for Mac, how's it work?

ominousplay ( ) posted Sun, 16 January 2005 at 3:25 AM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 10:50 PM

I've been a Poser user for some time now. I'm moving to working on a Mac OSX for most of my 3D work. While I use Poser4 and ProPack now on Mac, I'm looking into upgrading to 5. How does P5 work on Mac? I haven't been keeping up with this forum. Is it stable? Do I still need ProPack (does it work with P5?) for adding bones to new figures? Does the cloth work in OSX? What features don't work? Lots of questions, but I don't think the website says it all. And I'm also looking at an upgrade to Carrara4Pro, comes with TransPoser. Anyone using C4Pro with Transposer and Poser5 on Mac OSX? Thanks for any help. R.

Never Give Up!

Take a look over in the Mac forum, there's a lot of discussion about this topic there. Short answer: It works, but not terribly well. Basic issues: doesn't take advantage of dual processors, Python doesn't work, is pretty slow. I keep a PC to run Poser and some other stuff that just doesn't run great on Mac.

"python doesn't work" is a suprise to me because I am a Macintosh beta tester for a prominent Python author. It works. I have Poser5 on a Mac G5 Dual 1.8 with 2.5 gig RAM. Renders at about the same rate as my 2.4 GHz PC. You have to 'kick up the bucket' with Poser5 on a mac...it makes a much more signficant impact on Mac than on PC. ::::: Opera :::::

What's missing from Python on P5 Mac is Tkinter support, so no GUI for python scripts. Any script that can do without the dialog boxes (other than a simple yes/no/cancel) can be made to work on the Mac. The worst part of P5 Mac is its lack of stability (though I see just as many complaints from PC users about Poser crashing). There seem to be gaping holes in lots of its memory management/garbage collection. That said, the current P5 on OS X is not fully native. It uses the CFM binary format intended as a migration aid from OS 9, rather than the fully native MachO binary format. This adds significant overhead to every bit of I/O the program does (excluding compute bound renders which are only limited by being unable to utilise a second CPU at all). I hear that CL are working on Poser 6. If the Mac release lags the PC version by 18 months (as happened last time), the only excuse I would tolerate would be that they were making it fully OS X native and adding multi-processor support. Setup and cloth rooms both work as well as the rest of P5 on the Mac. I wouldn't want to put you off upgrading to P5 though. Most of my complaints are of the genre "Huge Scope For Improvement", rather than "Don't Waste Your Time and Money". ;-) Prefix-GeoffIX-Suffix

As someone who has also used P5 on my single processor G5, I actually have had no problems with stabiliy but I tricked out my machine with loads off Ram when I bought it. As for speed, it should seem much faster than running poser 4 in classic mode. The Tkinter problem is the one big one for me; I thinking about trying one of the numerous alternate Tkinter solutions to see if I can work around it.

Python works fine for me, both on my G4 and G5.
I've found P5 to be extremely stable on both of my Macs.
I've had no problems so far, and have been using it almost since P5 for MacOSX came out.

But just like P4, it definitely wants all the resources you can give it so the more RAM and processor speed, the better. I think you'll love P5, especially the material room. Just give yourself time to adjust to P5 and have fun - I know I have been. ;)

I'm using a iMac G5 and the only "problem" I've had is the "Lack of RAM" hang. Once I upped my RAM it's been great. The biggest problem is between the Keyboard and the chair.
Poser 5 on OS X makes it clear we mac users are the poor country cousins.
With the current tools at their disposal, it's sad to see the state of Poser on the Mac. It runs and feels like a poor port.
The Python Tkinter problem will resolve if Poser is properly migrated to MachO. It is due to development being stopped on the old OS 9 version of Tkinter.
I'm hopeful that with the current changes and "The Apple Renaissance" we will again see a concerted effort to modernise Poser. Fingers crossed X.

I'm a mac user and really really want to be able to use philCs new clothing creator, but the tkinter problem stops me! Other than that I'm happy using poser 5 on my mac with lots of ram. Love esther

Would have to agree about thetkinter problem, but other then that, I honestly have no complaints for my Poser 5 work flow.
