THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Ya think this image can make it to #1 on the H20? I worked so hard on it and it took me sooooo long render. Yes, I know what the H20 is and what it means and so on and yadda yadda, but I mean, WTF? who are these people that look through the gallery and the H20 and vote for them? Right now, in the H20, there are images by orbital, alvinylaya and lemonjim that SHOULD be higher in the ratings than they currently are if not #1. Someone elses model of a snowman, a skeleton and a smattering of postwork DO NOT equate to #1. And the comments for it - fascianting, brilliant, fantastic, excellent and the rest of the fake compliments so as not to make the guy feel bad are ridiculous. You post something and someone critiques it in a negative way, it's still positive because it tells you how you can improve it. If you don't want to hear somethign negative and have your feelings hurt, DON'T POST ANYTHING. Sorry, but that just aggravates the crap out of me.

I hear ya. This kind of topic is posted every other week or so. Its frustrating, and I don't get it anymore than you do. Brilliant work BTW. Excellent. Mind making it a freebie. ;-)

oh for crying out loud. yes, you're right. but are you getting anything out of the hot20? does renderosity put you on the front page or do you have any products you're selling that this kind of publicity could benefit from? every single 12 year old with a brain can figure out how to make 5 or 6 dummy accounts and vote for himself just so he can feel swell. but it's not going to help him any bit in turning into an artist. and everybody knows it. make something that's worth it, and it will get up there. the system works both ways: it can be faked, or it can be for real, and you sure as hell feel better when it's for real :)

striving ( ) posted Wed, 19 January 2005 at 2:18 PM

Yep, every week this topic is posted (for the last 2 years). And every week the prob with the h20 is ignored by R. Its very frustrating man. Myself, I am taking a vacation from posting here at R for a couple months. I'd rather have "no dog in the fight" so to speak then post and get frustrated with images I spent mass time on getting snubbed. I say you write to some Admins and post in the CC forum about this. Keep on their ass about the h20 issue. From what I last heard from an admin here, R is planning to deal with the h20 issue this year. But who knows when. Believe me, alot here feel like you do. Hang tough. -B

But.....
Yes, finally some positive responses (Drac and Striving).
:-D I'm so glad to see that tho it started very negative this is quickly going in the right direction. Like I said before if someone wants to start a petition, I'll sign it. But please don't bash anyone's work. Unless you somehow think you are so much better in which case I still don't feel that gives you that right. :-D

Umm...I am not sure if that will quite make the hot 20 Boomer. The guy who currently has 2 images in says that one of them took him a whole 3 hours to put together and 20 mins to render. Now just imagine that effort. If that is the way to make it to the top, we all should take note. Seriously the only way at the moment to change things is to visit the gallery every day and vote for the images that do deserve it. Think positive, things can only get better!

BOOMER ( ) posted Wed, 19 January 2005 at 4:03 PM

I know what everyone means and I totally understand it (Drac). I was on hiatus for a while and was around for a while a and come back to some awesome new things and things that haven't changed. Like this. I get pissy because if someone that hasn't used Bryce before wants to see what it's about and goes looking at the H20 and they see some of the images up there, I don't want them to think that those images are somehow representative of of Bryce. I'm not looking at it from a personal perspective at all. I'm looking at it from the community perspective. I remember when I was working on my oil rig and posting progress images. I would get a "great job" or wow, looks good". That's all I needed. It was even compared to some of the great names we have around here. Just looking out for the gang here is all. @chohole - No H20? Damn! I was hoping that would get me AOY! ;-)

Careful Boomer...the guy in question got flamed on this topic last time...seems to have a following. I started adding a few regs to my fav artists so I know when you all post and I started voting more often. That seems to be the only way to work the system at the moment.

drawbridgep ( ) posted Wed, 19 January 2005 at 6:16 PM

I think Claymor hit the nail on the head. We have to start voting. It's the only way to make it work. OK, I'm gonna go through and do some voting. Who's with me?

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

BOOMER ( ) posted Wed, 19 January 2005 at 7:23 PM

You've all brought up some good points. WE are the only ones that can do something about it. Incarnadine come on, man. It took me 30 swconds to render it. I was jonesing to use my computer again after so long a wait. Do you have any idea what chrome and water can do to render times?

Hey TG, been MIA. Work has been rather busy. Got transfered to narcotics and that measn no more "steady" hours. THey almost change on a weekly basis. But I figured I had to come home and get back to what I enjoy doing, BRYCING! Yeah, the H20 has usually been a touchy subject around here, but after what I saw, I "almost" snapped. Man did I hold back. @ pakled - why can't you be more sympathetic like Indigo. Now, my feeling are hurt. I'll never post another image again. (runs off screaming, running and crying with arms flailing at his sides - The fact that I'm sporting a goatee and a nice Mohawk right now should add to the mental image)

Which comes down to the age old question of "who are the deserving" and "how do we determine what is deserving".... popular vote.... pistols at thirty paces...? ;)

I'll be interested to see what the PTB end up doing with the Hot20 to adjust it - whether its still going to be a popular vote, or worked out from some bizarre equation, or whether a select panel of the chosen ones get to determine it. Should be interesting either way. edit - BOOMER sporting a goatee and mohawk... thats a pretty intimidating sight lol

I'm thinking "moppery and dopery with intent to Bryce" or "annoyance of a Brycer with intent to render". Or...no, forget it, not even going to say it.

We're going to use a tried and true method of drawing straws, no wait, that's something else, yes, we're going to use a bizarre algorithum(spelling?)that filters images through another dimension first, bringing everything into focus with an eye for the aesthetic interwoven extended hyperbolic expungable whole based on the rule of writs with an added factualism that leads to the exquisite end product of the remainer in the top most equation of the selection......;]

Flak ( ) posted Wed, 19 January 2005 at 11:52 PM

Will the extended hyperbolic expungable be green or red and is it going to be a result of the cross product of the rankings with the number of comments conjugated with the transverse of the voters screen name (in a non-relativistic sense while reversing the polarity of the neutron flow)?

Or... are you just hiding the fact that whats really going to happen is you're going to print out all the images in the gallery in greyscale, lie them all over the floor, and whatever the 16 cats sleep on the most gets in the hot 20?

As long as you can see at least one qualityimage in the h20 the other ones will be revealed with the comparison.

Brian S. ( ) posted Thu, 20 January 2005 at 12:42 PM

Since nobody knows who votes for what unless they tell... Why not make some sort of minus vote button. That way when there's an image everyone dislikes so much they could hit minus to subtract votes... LOL.

drawbridgep ( ) posted Thu, 20 January 2005 at 12:48 PM

Ha! Interesting idea. But you may get people doing negative votes against people they don't like, in the same way that you probably get positive votes for people they do.

Solution to Hot20 (or, at least the best solution that flawed humans can find)...is yes, some bizarre, complex algorythym of votes, views, comments and rankings. Nothing is perfect, or air tight obviously, but I am all for the Hot20 being a MIX of "fields", i.e.; votes, views, comments and rankings. (or, as least as many variables as we can input) AgentSmith

lordstormdragon ( ) posted Fri, 21 January 2005 at 8:32 AM

... then I shall comment. It occured to me that having a Hot 20 to showcase Brycean artwork will ALWAYS be corruptible. So, let's toss that factor out... Amount of views? The naked Vicki's win. Amount of comments? The robot-friends win. Amount of votes? Again, goes to the 'bots. Rankings? Again, 'bots. If any of you vote for any of my images, I will personally soil myself. I'd rather be filthy than join the ranks of substandard robots. That said, I mean no offense to the wonderful artists who happen to be there. You know who you are, because you slaved for hours on end to make those scenes. Way I see it at Renderosity the people in here, the Bryce forum, are my greatest critics. I use the gallery solely as a way to market my "artwork". It's got a convenient link setup and I can send to people from anywhere to view my stuff. I sincerely enjoy and respect the praise and criticism on my gallery posts, but I use the "viewings" number mostly to determine what I'm doing right or wrong, both in imagery and presentation. Coincidence that both of my vertical-aspect images are my most popular ones? Maybe. But if I want sincere feedback, I'll bring it to you guys. The opinions (onions?) of the teeming masses mean nothing since it doesn't change my bank account OR my life. I don't care about popularity, and if I need an ego boost regarding my art I'll just toss something new in the forums and see what you people think. If it sucks, it sucks. If it's good, you guys will tell me. And if you don't know who the "good Brycers" are yet, just scroll up. Many of their names are right here on this page.

Kemal ( ) posted Sat, 22 January 2005 at 12:44 AM
