Hi all,

I've uploaded this abysmal attempt at "art", called "invocation" - it's an obvious attempt to follow the theme of Zhann's wonderful piece of work "The Summoning", only I've used a bloke (naked 'cos I can't do clothes yet, and I refuse to have him in a business suit!)

The sea's not quite there, the spray is terrible, I haven't got a ship there yet, and the rocks are just awful.

Any helpful comments like; how the heck I can get the spray right, how I can improve the rocks in the - is it the deep texture editor?
How I keep his hair on.
How I arrange for him to have real eyes.
And how to find a nice dying ship...

I'm still trying to work on how to figure out clothes for him... or anyone else for that matter...

Hi Fran- Good to see you again! and Welcome to the bryce forum. They are a cool bunch of people in here - I have been hanging here for a while. Were do you want to start. (A couple of questions, which flavour of Bryce do you have and which flavour of poser?) pick something and well work on that then on to the next issue when we get that sorted. Richard

At least it is nice some people can get encouragement for their Bryce images, especially when trying to learn the program. It seems all I ever get are trolls making horrid comments. I would appreciate some constructive criticisms, and not simple bashing stuff for the simple pleasure of causing (or trying to) grief, or pure nastiness.

I see complaints go nowhere when a troll does their work. Guess the TOS are not ever applied.

Fran: You may have already seen this, but if not, here is a link to Zhann's tutorial on the making of "The Summoning". You might find it helpful, and it is rated at beginner's level. Keep Brycing!

Hi Fran, I did a little looking into B4 and found the lighting is done slightly different from B5 check the link, look at post 2 especially and some of the others to be able to edit your lights.(intensity, color ,etc)

Now that I can see where you are some more pointers;

-reduce the size of the sea texture, so that it is much smaller, do this in the Materials lab

-the terrains you are using for foam, looks like you forgot a step in the tutorial for adding 'noise' in the terrain editor, that will bring it to a more realistic foam. Also, elimiate the terrain edges using the clipping bracket in the terrain editor, this will help with the illusion of the seafoam....

-reduce the size of the material for the rocks, try using 'Jungle Canopy' and in the DTE, change the color green to more brownish, I can't do a mat for you cause I'm using B5, however there are lots of materials in the Bryce freestuff for terrains.

-Do everything you need to do to your Poser figure before you export for Bryce

You have a good start, and we can help you refine your workflow and images, I'm very proud of what you have after reading the tutorial. It's more an intermediate level tut....

Incarnadine/Richard,

Hi again. I have Bryce4 and Poser5. I'm finding Poser a bit of a poser... ( sorry, couldn't help it.) especially cloth and hair!
I'm enjoying Bryce4 - having used Bryce3D for some time it's more familiar than Poser - although nowadays the render times are getting a bit long in Bryce4, as I use bigger and bigger terrains! (I need more memory I guess)

Oh, I've found some clothes for my bloke now - Swordbearer from Poserfashion.net - although as soon as I choose the pose I want - he jumps out of the robe. Haven't figured that bit of the cloth room out yet.

I've tried growing hair - rather than using the hair from the props (?) which falls off when I try exporting/importing him to Bryce4 - but that comes up blonde, and I can't seem to get it out of his eyes.

I'd appreciate help with those two bits - if you can.

Thanks, Fran

Darkness02,

Thanks, I do keep looking in the freestuff area - actually I look at ALL the freestuff areas I can find - fun, isn't it?

About the figure, well it looked okay in Poser (apart from being naked) but as soon as I got it into Bryce4 the hair fell off and the flesh arrived with strange numbers all over his body! And his eyes blanked out. Weird!

I've grabbed quite a few textures, (mostly woods - dunno why really but there seemed to be a lot of wood textures about,) although I'm not entirely certain what I do with them now I've got them.

Hopefully someone or some tutorial somewhere will help me to figure that bit out. (I've got the woods into Bryce - not sure about rock textures though.)
Thanks for your help.

Poser 5 native hair does not export well. Load up on some of kozaburo's transmapped freestuff! (see link) as to the export/import and texturing I believe Rudy (Rochr) has a good tut on this on his website. AS to the eye issue, one component of the P5 eye is a shell layer that needs to be material replaced with a glass mat. I seem to remember a thread about that somewhere (not sure if it was here or over in the Cinema4D forum. Another suggestion regarding your rocks, for closeup increase the grid size in the terrain lab. The added detail helps dramatically. For farther into the background terrains a lower grid resolution may be used. Above all else have fun, ask questions and we'll be here to answer. Richard

Oh, and if you need Wood Materials, go to Tony Lynch's site; he has at least 70-80 of them.

Don't worry, doing effective water and spray is one of the hardest things to do in Bryce..have fun, and keep posting..;)
Sorry, forgot the other answers. If you want to export hair into Bryce, the most reliable way is to use the older, 'solid' hair, and conform it to the Poser figure. The really nice stuff that Koz and others make often doesn't export from Poser. If it shows up (hair, clothes, etc) as a sort of whitish grid in Poser, it likely won't show up in Bryce.
The eyes problem is simple. The outer layer of the eyeball comes into Bryce as a solid color. Use the control+mouse click to pull up a list of objects, and find the outer eyeball. Select that, and texture it with the most transparent glass you can find (I usually use the top left one). If you save the textures into Poser in a central place, you can get all the other textures to export as well (Bryce will bug you for them anyway). If not, I've found that a set of materials called Lego colors (I think they're at Wolfies' Den, but I have over a thousand downloaded, and the brain cells don't work as well anymore), and use Lego white for the whie, Lego black for the pupil, and any suitable color for the iris. Hope this helps.

Zhann,

Invocation answers

<<-reduce the size of the sea texture, so that it is much smaller, do this in the Materials lab>>

Er... how?
I went into the Materials lab but couldnt find anywhere to change sizes are you sure you dont mean click E and reduce the size of the terrain? Of course this sea is now a group (water + foam) so Id have to ungroup first wouldnt I?
Er... do I do this to all the sea terrains? I have about 3 or 4, some tilted some not. Help?

<<-the terrains you are using for foam, looks like you forgot a step in the tutorial for adding 'noise' in the terrain editor, that will bring it to a more realistic foam.>>

No, I didnt forget it exactly, but I wasnt sure if you meant basic noise, height noise or slope noise. I tried a little bit of basic, didnt see much difference, then tried a lot of basic and it looked way awful, like millions of tiny peaks, not like foam at all.

<< Also, elimiate the terrain edges using the clipping bracket in the terrain editor, this will help with the illusion of the seafoam....>>

I did. I do that with almost all my terrains nowadays, when you have clear water it does away with the squared-off block look terrains would otherwise have.

<<-reduce the size of the material for the rocks, try using 'Jungle Canopy' and in the DTE, change the color green to more brownish, I can't do a mat for you cause I'm using B5, however there are lots of materials in the Bryce freestuff for terrains.>>

The size of the material??? Or the size of the terrain? Im a bit confused here.
I tried 'Jungle Canopy' didnt like it , look too green like slimy mossy rock if someone had really tried standing on it, theyd have sliped into the sea pronto! I want it to look more bleak, a stark rock sort of feel. I think the most recent one Ive tried is Forested Granite but Bryce4 never tells you what youve chosen as a material, you have to run through everything trying them all out again. Takes ages.

<<-Do everything you need to do to your Poser figure before you export for Bryce>>

I will but the things Id already done to this figure in Poser fell off when I imported him to Bryce his hair, his skin colour, his eyes, etc Is this always going to happen? If it is then whats the point of doing things to him in Poser?

Anyway, at this point, I just used the figure to test where he was going to stand and the check the proportions of the scene, the cameras position the layout etc. I THINK its okay.

<< You have a good start, and we can help you refine your workflow and images, I'm very proud of what you have after reading the tutorial. It's more an intermediate level tut....>>

Yeah, well, I usually prefer doing the more complex tutorials they have the things I actually WANT to do in them, often simple ones only show you how to do things youll never want to use, and cant see the point of. Im glad you think Im doing okay, thanks.

Hey, today I made a low stone tower with steps going down to the sea I did boolean! Wayhay! Um, different picture that one. I wonder... what does a poser figure look like half in and half out of the water?

Im still looking for a wooden ship for this Invocation though, a couple of days ago I found a site where people were actually asking what people WANTED created, I asked for a wizards staff, but now Ive thought of asking them about the ship I cant remember where the heck I was! Duh!

pakled,
Hey thanks for those tips,
"Oh, and if you need Wood Materials, go to Tony Lynch's site; he has at least 70-80 of them."
I have some woods but hey, it wouldn't hurt to grab a few more, wood it? Do you know this Tony Lynch's website address?

I could really do with some nice stone just at present. Does he do that too?

"Use the control+mouse click to pull up a list of objects, and find the outer eyeball. Select that, and texture it with the most transparent glass you can find"

Oh I can do that - did it with some fish one day - not the glass, clicking the item in a list. Thanks for that tip.

Oh and I know Wolfie's Den, found that a few months ago, saved & the website address. Thanks.

Fran, 'basic noise' and it should look gritty, then you just lower the height of the terrain....this particular thing is very difficult to get right but you just have to keep going back to the terrain editor, add noise, lower, raise a little, add noise, etc until it looks the way you want it. Unfortunately, for this tut there's no, click this you get that, everything requires tweaking, tweaking tweaking, remember I had a month to do this challenge image, it didn't go together and look great first try. The tutorial itself is a starting place....=)

lordstormdragon, Oh yes, I definitely like the spray. (Like the beach too and the terraced levels in that terrain!) I'll have to have a go at something like that, actually I'm already doing something along the same lines, in as much as I'm trying to get a gently sloping beach terrain, to build my paved terrace onto... I WAS intending to have a beach babe resting her upper body on the stone steps while the rest of her lounges in the water - unfortunately I can't even get a bikini onto a poser figure without the figure disappearing, leaving the costume hanging in mid-air! By all means, please do send the spray material. And thanks very much. FranOnTheEdge

some of Tony lynch's stuff is for 5 but a lot are for 4 or 3ds. I have used them when I was working with 4. Look back at some of the older ones. I think when Zhann refers to lowering she is taking about lowering in the terrain lab or physically in the scene.

Actually, I found that decreasing the numbers in that materials editor made the material go denser, but enlarging the numbers worked better, I used this on some other materials in other images too - great stuff! I'm trying all sorts of "lowering" in various places. Helped with a sci-fi scene too! Thanks all. FranOnTheEdge
