Subject: Read Instructions

DJB ( ) posted Sun, 30 January 2005 at 11:23 PM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 4:23 AM

I actually sat and read some of the manual on this 8700 today. Found out how to get into manual mode and shoot RAW, plus adjust some shutter settings.White balance and the like. when I first bought it I sort of had it down,but shot so many images using the presets that I drifted away from that learning curve. One funny instruction of note is "When setting the focus in viewfinder, becareful not to poke your finger in your eye."

"The happiness of a man in this life does not consist in the absence but in the mastery of his passions."

I do wonder at times why these sort of things are written. This one sits up there with the warning on my daughters hairdryer flex "WARNING do not use in the bath or shower, to prevent electric shock" Maybe these things need to be said, but more likely it is political correctness gone mad

Yup. Some warnings make no sense. I bought a can of propellant for my air gun yesterday. On the side of the can, it reads "Do not eat."

I know this is gonna get silly, but this has to be one of my current favourites.......... On a bag of frozen peas it says......... Suitable for vegetarians!! Really? Well I would have never have guessed that.

I agree if all else fails then read the instructions :)

And every one said, 'If we only live,
We too will go to sea in a Sieve,---
To the hills of the Chankly Bore!'
Far and few, far and few, Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green, and their hands are blue, And they went to sea in a Sieve.

Or on the bag of peanuts it says " May contain nuts"

Doug - I actually re-read much of my 10D manual about once every 3-4 months. Helps me to keep those weird, esoteric functions and controls in mind for when I might need them. I learned in a class at college that every time you see one of those stupid warning or instructions, it means that the company wrote them because there was at least one person who was dumb enough to do it and tried to sue because of it.

My favorite - on the bottom of some paper bags "This recepticle is not suitable for transporting burning embers."

Ahhh, the lengths we go to in order to protect our intellectually challenged. :)

"This recepticle is not suitable for transporting burning embers." My father used to work for a fire department near a ski resort. 90% of the time when one of the condos on the side of the mountain caught fire, it was because the residents had cleaned the embers out of their fireplace, put them in a paper bag, and tossed them into the trash. -sigh-

"Not suitable for vegitarians" A sign at the pre-cooked Chicken counter at a supermarket I visited a year or so ago. Made me chuckle at the time :) BTW - I thought it was an unwritten law that us guys never read a manual until we've absolutely and positively tried pressing all the buttons, turned all the dials and opened every compartment we could find. To do so before hand is considered rather un-manly :P saunters off to re-read manual
